“Informal and cosy Egyptian/Lebanese restaurant”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

I had dinner in Bab EL nile last weekend with my husband, starting with the setting it was very cosy. We sat in the coaches facing the entrance this is like a living room with its own TV and a remote control for your own use.
the place is originally a terrace with an open roof and because its winter now they were closing the ceiling with a tent like cover. it was still cold for me and they have additional mobile fire places on the guests disposal, I asked for one and it was brought our corner.
The cuisine is Egyptian and Lebanese. We ordered from the Mezza section in the menu hot and cold mezza which was very nice and the portions were good. I noticed some people coming only for shisha and tea which is a good option if you are going only to enjoy the restaurant atmosphere.
The value for money is really good, we ordered 5 mezza, one hawawshy, 1 shisha, 2 soft drinks, 2 tea and a bottle of water and we paid slightly above LE300,- which is amazing for a restaurant in a 5 star hotel.
Would like to go again but this time may be with friends as I felt its an outing that needs a big group.

“It could be cultual differences but...”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

So it all started with googling for reviews and Bab El Nil at Fairmont Nile City seemed decent enough to splurge a little. We ordered a Shin of Beef soup, a lamb shank and a grilled mixed seafood, and waited.

And waited. We were used to the slower pace in Cairo, having already spent 4 days there, but 45 mins was certainly pushing it for a restaurant that was not filled and most of the other customers were only having shisha and drinks.

To their credit, they came with complimentary salad, bread and homos (or humus) and shortly after, our orders arrived. The lamb shank was a huge chunk of meat, looking like a deadly club. It was too tough and my jaws got tired from chewing. With the metal knife, it still took a lot of effort to cut through. It was a total chore eating it.

The mixed seafood grill was of a smaller proportion, even though it was more expensive. 2 prawns, small pieces of sea bass, salmon and calamari. The salmon was overcooked and the rest were just a tad as well.

The service crew was attentive and asked for feedback which we gave. They explained that the toughness and overcooked nature was how the locals ate it.

If you are ordering any food, make sure to ask it to be done the way you want.
