I have stayed at the Odeon Palace several times and, while there are better hotels in Cairo for the price (e.g. the Carlton, Grand, Windsor), it is OK for a night or tow if others are full.
Agreed, the receptionists are not very welcoming and service is generally slow and unenthusiastic, but I have found the rooms to be comfortable, quiet and clean. There are only local TV channels but the beds are comfy.
The hotel's best asset is its 24hr rooftop bar where you can enjoy a cheap Stella and a tasty snack and look over the city's skyline, far from the chaotic traffic below..

I've just returned from Cairo, having spent 2 stays of 6, and 5 days at the Odeon. We travelled to Luxor and Aswan in between.
Two of our party of 4 had stayed at the Odeon in 2006, finding it OK, with problems with the staff's lack of English being the main problem at that time.
Well, the staff are still barely able to understand English, and, in common with a lot of Egyptians, do not bother to listen, especially to women. Our group had 3 women, and 1 man (my brother). The staff just did not reply if any of the women asked anything, looking to my brother, who, comically had to repeat what was said, and then, mostly, ignored.
The rooms: room 705 has no working shower. This was the room my brother had in 2006, and he complained at the time about this. When we returned from Aswan, we requested not to have this room. A bath is fine, but it's not the ideal way to wash one's hair. The reception staff did their 'ignore the tourists' bit, and tried to give us this room. My brother ended up arguing with the porter about it, the porter insisting there was nothing wrong with the shower, and having to be shown that it doesn't work. He then left to get another key.
Room 706 has no working power points. The fridge/TV point is behind the furniture, and is the only working one. Also,a power point on the wall has a piece of metal wire sticking out of it!! Stay clear if you get that one.
Those rooms are on the corners of the building, and are small. they have a double bed, and the aircon works, albeit noisily.
Rooms 704, 703, 708 and 709 are large rooms, but they have 2 single beds pushed together. Room 707 was filthy when we arrived back, there were pubic hairs on the toilet, and in the bath, and a big blob of sputum (a golly) on the splashback of the basin in the bathroom. The bed was nicely made, though!!
The rooms had virtually no outlook, some overlook the roff tops of buildings next door, with the dirt and rubbish up there.
Breakfast was also just an exercise in dirt. The bread and butter plates had breadcrumbs on them; one morning, my collegue lifted her serviette and there was an olive pit on the plate under it! The man on duty had obviously looked at the setting, and thought the previous person had not used the napkin, and left it. The plates had smears on them, as if they had been brushed off, rather than washed. I shudder to think about the knives and forks. We had paid for breakfast, but went each day to the Nile Hilton for their excellent buffet.
Most of the guides say this hotel is in a quiet location. I used the aircon as 'white noise', but my collegues didn't. Every night when the cinema 2 doors up, came out, there was a lot of noise.
The only good thing that I can say about this dreadful place is it's proximity to the Egyptian Museum. It's cheap, but not worth the angst.
Therefore, I say to you: don't even think about staying here!!!!!

We went here on the basis of a good review in the Lonely Planet. Our room was small, hot, with no working air conditioning. The television didn't work and despite staying four days, at no stage was toilet paper supplied for the bathroom. The staff were unhelpful and unfriendly. At $50 a night this hotel is expensive and poor value for money.

  • Liked — The roof top bar had a good view of Cairo
  • Disliked — Terrible front desk staff, poor quality rooms.

Maybe a 2.5/5, but not quite a 3.0.

Because of a 2:30am flight arrival in Cairo, my fiancee and I really needed to book a hotel in advance. Based upon the LP and TA reviews, as well as the friendly staff on the phone, we booked the Odeon Palace for 5 nights at US$51/night excluding breakfast. We left after two nights though, and ended up at the cheaper and nicer Victoria Hotel (see my review).

The hotel entrance is dark and a bit foreboding, at either 4am or 4pm. The night staff was sound asleep when we arrived and I'm not sure he ever woke up throughout our check-in process. It wasn't the best welcome. The rooms are on the 7th-9th floors (not sure what's in between) but like the lobby the corridors feel a bit like a dark alley at any time of day. The room is a decent size, but not particularly nice: old peeling paint, black stains on the walls, old creaky furniture, and a view of an adjacent apartment block. The bed is comfy and clean however. There is a very old tv and noisy fridge, as well as a phone which seems to work but doesn't actually. The bathroom is clean but a bit run down too. The shower curtain was falling apart and hanging on the last 40% of it's clips. You need to tap the light bulbs from time to time to keep them on. Make sure you're grounded.

On the upside, the location is good. Walking distance to either the Sadat or Nasser Metro stations, as well as the Egyptian Museum (if you don't mind some death-defying street crossing). There are lots of cheap eats nearby, including the superb and amazingly cheap koshary at Abu Tarek on the next block. The mall on the corner has a food court where you can get a quick and reasonable coffee and/or breakfast in you don't want the hotel's EP15 breakfast. It's on a quietish side street which gets very crowded with auto mechanics during the day, so taxis are easier to get at the corner, two minutes walk away.

Aside from the night clerk, the staff were very nice and helpful. And our opinion of the place softened considerably after a couple beers and a sheesha at the nice rooftop bar/restaurant. I suggest staying elsewhere and coming here for a drink.

Homey hotel in central Cairo, near Talaat Harb Square and the Egyptian Museum. Rooftop restauraunt open 24 hours popular with cosmopolitan clientel. Friendly staff, large well-kept rooms, with intricate wood panneling throughout. Excellent breakfast included with french drip coffee. My wife and I really enjoyed staying here while exploring Cairo and the Pyramids. Have the front desk write the name and address out for you in Arabic if you plan on using the local Cairo taxies.

Room was large and clean, staff were helpful.

Unfortunately due to language (lack of english/egyptian) a problem arose when trying to pay in EGP, apparent you need to a receipt to show you have exchanged another currency into EGP, we were informed that we needed a receipt from the bank, due to a misunderstanding on our part, or lack of an full explanation on the part of the staff, we thought we actually had to exchange our traveller's cheques at the bank, we spent several hours in what could only be describe as very very frustrating only to discover what they meant was if you went to the ATM and withdrew money that receipt was sufficient.

Also if you are going to pay by credit card, do this a couple of hours before you are due to check out, as their line with the bank is often down.

Apart from this if you want cheap, clean accommodation, close to the heart of things I would highly recommend this hotel, the 24 hour rooftop bar is very handy and the location of the hotel is great.
