Great to see this fortress and the Mohammed Ali Mosque inside. I highly recommend going with a guide who can tell you about the architecture and history (we used Memphis Tours, who were great).

Very large fortress with mosques and various museums within the walls. It was Eid so the downside was millions of kids running round like a playground but on the whole they didn't spoil the experience because the grounds are so big.

There is nothing much remaining of the citadel but the mosque is in pretty good shape. The indoors are quite beautiful and well maintained. You can have a good view of Islamic Cairo from here. Don't waste time visiting Military and Police museums nearby. Entry tickets for non-Egyptians around 80 EGP.

This place was constructed in the 12 century as place of Egypt's ruler and kept for the same purpose till the 19th century.
The citadel represents a Unique structure the mosque and other buildings.
Huge artistic colourful details.
The place have a few others museums related to modern history 19th and 20th centuries.
I liked the mosque, and royal wagons.
you can see old Cairo from one of its corners.

Beware that the citadel closes at 3 during Ramadan. We tried to go at 2:50, not knowing it closed at 3. We walked all the way up the big hill and couldn't get in.
