Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah
Ranked #3 of 139 Hotels in Cairo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 15, 2013

Location:
Wonderful, just in the middle of Cairo (you could walk to the egyptian museum) directly located at the nile and so far away from any major road (actually in something like a sports park) you hardly hear any traffic noises. There can hardly be a more quieter place in Cairo. Just 20-40 minutes from the airport and about 1 hour to the pyramides.

Rooms:
Big, ample of space, a nice bathroom, lot´s of cupboards, a big TV, a very large and soft bed, a small sitting area and a very small balcony. Clean with all the amenities you could possibly argue to have at such a hotel. Of course a wonderful view out over the Nile and to Cairo. But yet, this is the one serious fault. If your room is below the 15th floor and has a room number in between 3 and 14 ask to change immediately. The fans of the aircondition of the whole hotel go straight up and this mean serious noise, and even rattling in the rooms. Wer had one in the 6th floor first and after we noticed the noise immediately asked to change which brought us up to the 21st floor. High enough one would think but still, you could hear it. Not too loud up there but you get the picture.

Public areas:
Clearly made to impress. A very large hall all nicely decorated, everything clean and nice and large. One bad point: Smoking indoors is allowed. A very nice little garden and the best of all, the heated pool with a superb view of the nile, very nice sitting opportunities and birds around you.

Staff:
Basically friendly and nice but here the glitches start: Check out at 8 am , only one person at the reception, Ordering a beer at the pool I was told, no problem, 5 minutes later: Sorry Sir we do not serve beer anymore, going on the floating deck: "Sorry, minimum charge 200 EGP" "??" "oh, you are guests, sorry,". A gin tonic turned into a vodka lemon... Do not get me wrong, most of the time they delivered but for a five star hotel...
Food:
An extremely nice breakfast buffet with a very good choice of cold and warm dishes, very great choice of bread, sweets, fish, juices, not the best I ever had but surely somewhere high up. Three out of three days we ended up quite full and happy. Lot´s of gluten free food as well if this is an issue for you. For the restaurants, the Turkish and the Moroccan were perfect, the Buddha bar a complete failure (see detailed reviews on those). Then again for the drinks, the glitches start again. First cocktail: Sorry we do not have. Second cocktail (both on the menu), Sorry, we do not have, third, cocktail Gin Tonic, Sorry, we do not have.

All in all, we did have a nice stay the glitches were more fun than anything else but ended up too many for a 5 star hotel and if we had had to stay in the lower floor the rating would have been at best two stars.

Sofital rises 27 stories on the banks of the Nile. Our 25th floor room gave breathtaking views of the surrounding city but standing outside on the small balcony was a vertiginous experience!
Everything was in place for a 5 star hotel, impeccibly trained staff, wonderful public rooms including a library although the smoking therein will seem strange to Western Europeans.
The tragagy of Egypt is its highly educated population reduced to taking on manual jobs, the receptionist was a qualified accountant and our breakfast waitress a graduate in computer studies; this situation is aggravated by the political instability keeping visitors away. When we stayed in February, normally peak season, Sofitel Hotel was only 1/3 full.
Room and bathroom 100%, always clean with very attentive chamber staff. A choice of restaurants with many Egyptian business people coming in just for meals. The meal prices had obviously been much reduced since the days of maximum occupancy. It was sad though to see a wonderful buffet meal laid out each evening with a large choice of hot and cold dishes but so few customers. There is also the ouside kebab restaurant and a more formal, table-service restaurant.
Early evening entertainment was provided by a Russian pianist singing in French! The hotel has a heated outdoor pool looking straight out onto the Nile but accessed from inside the hotel.
The current instability makes it a great time to visit Egypt with no pressure of crowds or queuing in the famous Cairo Museum, where everything Tutankhamen is displayed in all its glory.

Room Tip: Go high for the views!

El-Gezirah means island in Arabic. And the hotel is on an island in a river(The nile river) !!!
All of the rooms have a perfect viewing thanks to the rounded structure of the hotel and to the location that gives a huge breath without any high buildings near by.
The hotel has a wide garden at water level and there are lots of different service points as restaurants, cafes etc.
You can watch the boats going around with tourists who are entertaining, and you can even share their joy and start dancing with the music they are listening. :)
If you are lucky enough, which I was, you can witness a movie or TV set in action just at the garden of the hotel!!!
The lobby is good enough to hang out withyour friends, listen some piano, or just sit on the fluffy chairs.
Best thing for the rooms is their amazing sightseeing opportunity.
The stuff and the management were not my interest but also I didn't experienced any unexpected and unpleasent behaviour.
I was an invited guest and didn't pay for it, but if it is the actual situation, I saw some price signs in the rooms(yes, every room has some sign declaring the nightly prices for locals and for tourists) and the price was so expensive.
Anyhow, while my next Cairo trips, even if I would be staying somewhere else, one evening , I will definetly go there and have a cup of tea with fresh mint in the garden.

Room Tip: Insist to have a room faced to the cournish(East), so you can have a 180 degree perspective.

Beautiful hotel, well-run with generally attentive staff. My only complaint was that the loud music from the boats on the Nile often continued until 2am or later. Obviously, this is not the fault of the hotel.

Excellent breakfast, very nice gym/steam/pool facilities. It's also a very short and pleasant walk, maybe 15 minutes, to Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum.

Would highly recommend this hotel.

Cairo is overwhelming and exhausting at times. This hotel is an oasis of calm.

I have spent a lot of time in a lot of places in Cairo. Sofitel is the only place I choose to stay these days. Breakfast on the terrace next to the Nile is a great way to start the day. The staff are very friendly and helpful without being pushy and constantly looking for tips. The hotel itself is large yet well laid out so that it has more of a cozy feel than many of the others. It also does not have loads of creepy men lurking in the lobby.

The rooms are comfortable, bright and clean - the bathrooms are nice -- but ladies watch out -- the closets are tiny.

The spa and pool are also quite nice -- the pool being on the Nile as well.

My only tip is to try to avoid the sporting club view -- you still get the Nile but you also get the floodlights from the club.
