i stayed two nights and was only wishing to leave asap. the room was big on 3rd floor and spooky. the standard was not up to mark as per 3 stars of my country. but the location was good for business and touring purpose. the worst part was the hotel service, the waiters are pathetic, though they claim 24 hours service but i had to wait for an hour for a bottle of water and then finally had to go downstairs at 2'o' clock to purchase from the nearby cafe. the waiters attitude is like they are doing some favor for us and the only thing they expect is TIP, TIP AND TIP. but we were a group of 25 so we 'd adjust with it but i would never go back although i am again going to cairo in may.

We ended up here when the Longshamps nearby said that our e-mail confirmation wasn't really a confirmation after all. It was almost midnight, so we decided to give this place a try. They claimed that they had nothing available above the 2nd floor, so we got all of the honking noise all night. The bathroom floor had something sticky on it w/ stained grout. The furniture was flimsy, beds hard and breakfast awful. We couldn't wait to check out.

Spent few nights here late Nov 2008 and despite the negative reviews, my experience wasn't bad at all. In fact I enjoyed my stay. I was at the Concorde EL Salam during the first part of my trip and would gladly choose this place any day. The hotel itself isn't that fancy and somewhat dated but what it lacks in refinement or charm it makes up with location.
The hotel is located on the island of Zamalek which is very near to the downtown of Cairo. When booking a trip to Cairo this is important as the closer to the venues you are the better. Traffic here is horrid, the network of highways can't handle volume of traffic and the city lacks infrastructure.
What I enjoyed about Zamalek most of all were the nice shops, boutiques and restaurants. Females should shop at Sammi Amin if interested in buying original leather handbags, purses and other leather items. As far as restaurants go try not to miss Abu El Sid, the food and atmosphere is incredible. There are also a few really nice coffe shops at the base of the hotel tower that serves coffee, pastries and huka should you desire. Other sites to see other than the obvious ones can be reached easily by taxi. Bazaar Khan-El-Khalili isn't to far and a must see and so is the museum which is right across the bridge in Cairo.
As far as getting to the pyramids at Giza, Saqarra and Dashur it is easy to hire a taxi for the day. Just remember that all transactions in Egypt need to be negotiated. I was able to hire a taxi for the day for between $35-40 USD for the day. Be careful not to get sucked in to buying papyrus from their cousin or riding their friends camel at the pyramid. Learn to say no. Be polite but learn to say no.

Below is a list of the pros and cons of Om Kolthoom

PROS
1) Great location
2) Nice areas for walking and shopping on Zamalek
3) Hotel room aren't that bad and are quite large
4) Uber powerful shower
5) Several chic coffee shops nearby
6) Zamalek lively in nice way
7) Reasonably priced full service laundry

CONS
1)Breakfast buffet was awful
2)Hotel upkeep could be better

Positive:
Location and size of rooms

Negative:

Elevator broke down in one evening . We had to wait at the reception for at least one hour. I asked for something to drink and learned that I have to pay eventhough it is the management fault that we are waiting. This is not a 4 Star hotel by any standard. It used to have a golden days in the past but not any more . It is very old and has had no money spent on maintaining it.

b4 arriving i had a lot of apprehension b/c the research i have done shows that 4 star hotels in cairo does not equal 4 star hotels in N.America and i couldnt afford to go 5stars plus i had my 4 yr old child. There were 8 of us and we reserved 1 suite w/2 bedrms & another room w/2 beds - we were upgraded to 2 suites (one with 2 bedrms & other w/1 bedrm) adjoining on the higher floor facing the nile river.
HOTEL LOCATION is GREAT! right by nile river w/great view of city - b/en downtown & giza, has lots of cafes & restaurants right outside or w/in walking distance to hotel. great shopping w/in 5 min. drive. still busy enuf to get a taste of egypt but not too noisy (get room on higher flr) or too overwhelming. felt safe (even at nite) and Zamalek is fairly clean area.
HOTEL ROOM/SUITES
was fine. the only major complaint i had was the carpet - it WAS old & worn-down - so we asked the housekeepers to vacuum it thoroughly everyDAY and i would lay out a blanket when my child wanted to play on the floor! the beds were good & linens clean (although, i removed the wool blanket b/en the flat blanket & comforter- it was old & felt rough). Our view was awesome & had wrap-around balcony. bathroom was clean but bathtub older in our suite & other suite had more updated tub. noise level was tolerable & muted from our floor & we were facing the nile river & main street. amenities average-tv, fridge, phone,a/c all worked fine. internet access in hotel lobby or cafe next door.
RESTAURANT/BREKFAST - depends on individual taste - my in laws loved it & i stuck with bread & eggs everyday. but they do have a nice cafe right beside that serves good muffins, croissants and coffee.
STAFF- seemed friendly enuf.
overall, it definitely wasn't 4 stars as i am used to here in canada but it was perfectly fine for a one week stay for the rate we got it for.

Rooms are fine. Nice and clean but a bit dated. Bathrooms likewise.
Breakfast was pretty good though.
Liked the location in Zamalek and felt perfectly safe wandering around Cairo.
Was a bit noisy due to the traffic outside but i bet every hotel in Cairo suffers this problem.
All in all, quite happy at £40 per night and considering the Longchamps was full.
