“Not very pleasent”
Reviewed January 31, 2009

Positive:
Location and size of rooms

Negative:

Elevator broke down in one evening . We had to wait at the reception for at least one hour. I asked for something to drink and learned that I have to pay eventhough it is the management fault that we are waiting. This is not a 4 Star hotel by any standard. It used to have a golden days in the past but not any more . It is very old and has had no money spent on maintaining it.

b4 arriving i had a lot of apprehension b/c the research i have done shows that 4 star hotels in cairo does not equal 4 star hotels in N.America and i couldnt afford to go 5stars plus i had my 4 yr old child. There were 8 of us and we reserved 1 suite w/2 bedrms & another room w/2 beds - we were upgraded to 2 suites (one with 2 bedrms & other w/1 bedrm) adjoining on the higher floor facing the nile river.
HOTEL LOCATION is GREAT! right by nile river w/great view of city - b/en downtown & giza, has lots of cafes & restaurants right outside or w/in walking distance to hotel. great shopping w/in 5 min. drive. still busy enuf to get a taste of egypt but not too noisy (get room on higher flr) or too overwhelming. felt safe (even at nite) and Zamalek is fairly clean area.
HOTEL ROOM/SUITES
was fine. the only major complaint i had was the carpet - it WAS old & worn-down - so we asked the housekeepers to vacuum it thoroughly everyDAY and i would lay out a blanket when my child wanted to play on the floor! the beds were good & linens clean (although, i removed the wool blanket b/en the flat blanket & comforter- it was old & felt rough). Our view was awesome & had wrap-around balcony. bathroom was clean but bathtub older in our suite & other suite had more updated tub. noise level was tolerable & muted from our floor & we were facing the nile river & main street. amenities average-tv, fridge, phone,a/c all worked fine. internet access in hotel lobby or cafe next door.
RESTAURANT/BREKFAST - depends on individual taste - my in laws loved it & i stuck with bread & eggs everyday. but they do have a nice cafe right beside that serves good muffins, croissants and coffee.
STAFF- seemed friendly enuf.
overall, it definitely wasn't 4 stars as i am used to here in canada but it was perfectly fine for a one week stay for the rate we got it for.

Rooms are fine. Nice and clean but a bit dated. Bathrooms likewise.
Breakfast was pretty good though.
Liked the location in Zamalek and felt perfectly safe wandering around Cairo.
Was a bit noisy due to the traffic outside but i bet every hotel in Cairo suffers this problem.
All in all, quite happy at £40 per night and considering the Longchamps was full.

On arrival to Cairo after 20 hours of traveling , the first room we were given was so dirty that the bathroom was unusable. It was extremely noisy from 24 hour honking of cars talking with each other. The hotel is located beside a major road where is crosses over the Nile. At 1.00 a.m. the hotel started construction and it sounded like they were putting a carpet in over our heads. At 3.00 a.m. I went to the desk to request a new room which they agreed on. The noise was coming from repairs being done in the kitchen.
The room on the 14 floor which we got the next day was much better but it too needed some major cleaning.
I ran into some security problems where I could have been mugged. When I spoke with the manager on duty he denied the hotels involvement and said that he didn't know why tourists came there as there was nothing around. I requested to speak with the Tourist Police but was told they did not work at night and then one officer came who did not speak English and no one would translate. I think the issue was language/communication coupled with cultural differences.
They did have a good breakfast and the eating area was bright, clean and cozy. The staff were very helpful. Tips are required everywhere.
There is a good restaurant about 2 blocks behind this hotel called Five Bells.
I would not stay here again.

I stayed here with a group of Canadians & I booked the hotel being the travel agent/group coordinator, from the 12 - 16 February.

Arriving at night we had a great view of across the river, mosque and skyline of Cairo! It was a little noisy with honking horns but we learned that never went away!

I found the staff to be quite accommodating, maybe be cause I stated I was a travel agent upon checking in. The duty manager was very helpful with complaints, two clients having to change their rooms because of construction in the kitchen, arranging two cars for us to the Khan el Khalili. The cleaning lady was a dolly! The bus boys very helpful & of course, wanting a tip. Thats how they earn their money. If you travelled to Egypt before knowing the tipping factor, well you learn quickly! And complain? 5LE = .50 CAD. You'd tip more at a donut store anywhere else.

As for the day time view of the Nile... Cairo & the Nile are filthy regardless where the hotel is! I stayed at the Sheapards Hotel when I returned to Cairo & guess what... it was STILL filthy there!

The rooms at the Om Kolthoom are quite nice, surely a 3 star rating in North America but Egyptian standards a 5 star!

I had NO complaints about this hotel at all... I quite enjoyed it!

I have just come back from a week in Egypt. I stayed in Om Kolthoom for 1 night whilst in Cairo. When we initially checked in, the staff said he did not have 2 rooms available together so gave us in two different floors but promised we would have them by evening. We went to ask them again and he said there were none available. We told him about him promising us and the manager on duty was very rude and did not respond to us. Another tourist who was checking in then commented 'This is Egypt, no-one will keep their promise!' so we just din't bother any further.

The room was okay, but the bathroom was appaling. There was blood stains in the shower curtain and it was very unhygenic. All the while i was just glad we were staying there for a night!!!

When we checked in a porter came to drop off our bags and when we gave him LE5 as tip he asked for more. So, not knowing what is normal, we gave him LE10, and then he went to drop off the bags to the second room and asked for tip again. Whilst checking out, i made sure i din't give him any tip at all.

Our tour guide also mentioned that he was shocked we were actually staying in such a hotel. The area that is located in is not convenient, and far from the pyramids. The part of the Nile that you can see is absolutely polluted and not a pleasant sight.

I would not recommend anyone going to stay at this hotel.

The staff are very rude, and the hotel is just a nightmare to stay in!
