Golden Tulip Flamenco
Ranked #44 of 138 Hotels in Cairo
Reviewed September 24, 2012

I stayed in Flamenco many occasions. It is a nice hotel situated in a good location suitable for both business and leasure travellers. Breakfast is excellent. You can find many shops and restaurants nearby. The hotel is very close to the river side. Rooms are comforatble. Friendly staff. Overall a good hotel.

I stayed in the Flamenco on several occasions on business and have also put up our guests there. I have stayed in five stars hotels in Cairo but prefer this one for all he reasons other positive reviews mention: friendly, helpful staff, good standard of cleanliness, good breakfast, good safe area with nice restaurants, nice bar with good food if you don't want to go out.
The small rooms overlooking the street can feel too tiny but I always take one of the larger rooms or suites overlooking the Nile - lots of space and comfort, with a sofa, armchairs, desk etc.
Downsides: the sliding windows do not keep the street noise out as well as a double-glazed window would - this is one of he biggest problems in Cairo: the never-ending noise, Take a set of good quality earplugs. However, once when the noise of construction next door went on all night, the staff readily changed my room the next day.
Wifi reception in rooms is poor or non-existent, and good reception in the bar makes i difficult to work in the hotel,as it only opens at 11 am and can get noisy later in the day.
There is a good internet cafe opposite the hotel, but a 4* hotel should have the possibility of internet connection in rooms.
One last negative comment: the staff in the breakfast room could be better trained. They sometimes atke a vry long time to bring what you ask for, like coffee and tea.
Tips for restaurants in the area: my real favourite is the Five Bells, just a block away, with its garden it is an oasis of calm in a very noisy city, It has a lovely old-fashioned feel, with 1960s music - quite different from the hip Sequoya, which has excellent food but can be very noisy and overcrowded.
American Uni of Cairo Press bookshop is very close, as is the excellent Diwan Bookshop. A Fair Trade shop with very nice items that make good presents is also nearby. A lot of nice shops around the area save you a trip to the Khan Khalili Bazaar which can be exhausting - better walk and browse in the neigbourhood of your hotel.
A big plus: you can actually walk around Zamalek, unlike the rest of the city.

Room Tip: Take a room on the upper floors, ideally one of he big rooms at the beck of the hotel. Nile view is...

PROs. Great location in Zamalek (island in Nile) with lots of shops and restaurants in the neighborhood. Walking distance to Harry's Pub at the Marriott. Great pub in the hotel itself that also serves decent food. Excellent buffet breakfast. Comfortable rooms - each one very different, so ask to see a few first, then select. Friendly, courteous and helpful staff. Good value for money.
CONs. None significant.

Flamenco is a decent hotel, good value for the money. I stayed there for 2 nights. The staff were very nice, keen to serve quickly and promptly. Rooms are nice, calm and clean. Mine at least. Shower is clean and towels changed every day. Although situated on the busy side of Ismail Mohammad street, and surrounded by buildings, I can say my stay was calm inside once I close the window. Everything is a walk away. Souvenir shops, nice restaurants and coffee shops, supermarkets... Cabs always around to take you outside Zamalek. I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: If you want to have a nice view, avoid the rooms on the busy side of the hotel, and ask for those ov...

I stayed at the Flamenco with some colleagues on a weekend in Cairo. The rooms were small, but adequate. It is definitely a little dated and worn and there was nothing special about the amenities, but it was a decent bed for the price. We were disappointed that the promised wifi connection did not work in our rooms, but we were able to access it in common areas. We were pleased that the hotel bar served alcohol, even on a Friday, and we enjoyed the meal that we ate in the restaurant. The hotel is situated in Zemalak, which is a great location. The neighborhood is fairly calm for Cairo, but there is still plenty going on. You are a block away from the Nile, which has a nice walkway along it. There is both a pharmacy and a Metro grocery store across the street. This is a great place to get snacks and treats, though I would recommend getting water one of the smaller convenience stores since it is cheaper there. Another benefit to this hotel's location is that it is close to Giza, so if you are planning to see the pyramids during your stay in Cairo, as we did, it is a convenient jumping off point. As I mentioned, this is a good place to stay for the price, but just know what to expect when you arrive.

I've been to Cairo a few times, stayed here once for a week, when I was doing research. It was a very comfortable stay, normal rooms, A/C, clean showers, the works. Also, it's in az-zamalek...a diplomatic area, safe, good food around, so it's definitely worth it- a cab ride away from the city. There is also a bar, gift shop, and restaurant located in the hotel. The breakfast is amazing! We had to utilize the conference area quite a bit - it was big, tables and chairs were always set up the way we needed it, the view was great!

I've stayed at really shabby areas of Cairo- so this was definitely a thousand steps up!

In May my tour group spent 9 nights at the Flamenco Hotel, part of the Golden Tulip Chain. My room was in the older part of hotel. Yes, my room was "shopworn" as was the bathroom. But still it was a comfortable stay and I would return. If you want a more upscale experience, you can rent one of the newly rennovated "Nile view" rooms. The buffet breakfast is adequate with good variety. The ooffee is Nescafe (typical in Cairo) and it can be difficult to get a 2nd cup if you go to the buffet before 7 AM. There is a 24 hour grocery store, internet cafe, dry cleaners, money exchange, and numerous restaurants (both Egyptian and American fast food) within a few steps of the hotel. My biggest complaint is most of the staff including the front desk only spoke limited English.
