“Home away from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

I stayed here for seven weeks from May-July 2014. The hotel is beautiful and the staff are excellent - literally every team member (especially Hana'a at breakfast) would smile and say hello as I walked by. The gym (even gym junkies will be happy), pool and food options are all great. I have many happy memories of sitting outside in the shade watching the other guests walk by while sipping a 'lemon with mint' after a long day of work. Another good thing about the hotel is that all taxi drivers know it, so even if you don't really know where you are, if you say 'Marriott' you'll end up back home. I felt completely safe at all times and marvelled at the quiet level of buzzing activity at the hotel - always something going on. I'd stay again in a heartbeat. The neighbourhood near the hotel is really accessible and fun to explore, very safe to walk around, even as a female at night.

Room Tip: My room faced the courtyard/pool with a little piece of Nile glimpses. Relatively quiet (nothing is...

This heart of this hotel is a beautiful old palace with lovely decorations. However, around this have been built two huge towers to accommodate great numbers of tourists (and the casino) that make the hotel very impersonal. They are so busy that one night I waited for room service for more than 1 hour. The rooms have the feel of the typical, large-hotel room, clean but without focused attention (always a towel forgotten, coffee not replaced, etc).
The best thing about this hotel is its 50m pool. Early in the morning it is a great way to wake up, even on a Friday morning, when the pool area is still dotted with the filled ashtrays of the Thursday night late parties...
Do inspect your bill upon check out as mini bar charges mysteriously appear and avoid looking at these poor malnourished security dogs (so ubiquitous all over Cairo) that greet you on your way in lest you feel guilty for not being able to help them...

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors

I love the palace in the middle, the back garden is just amazing, staff are very high caliber, rooms are a little old and bathrooms definately need to changed. I was checked into my room at 8 am and was given a 4 pm late checkout. The gym is very clean and has new equipment

The stay was pleasant overall. Very clean rooms, great room service!
I travelled with my 8 year old son that would have turned 9 the next month and the hotel staff was about to make me pay for an extra room due to their religion beliefs... beware.

The old palace building is indeed impressive, but the two towers and the semi-circle of other buildings that have surrounded it to accommodate many more guests ruin the aesthetics, overall. The sheer size of the hotel makes maintenance hard and that was easy to notice in the room (bad smell in the wardrobes, hair in the bathroom that wasn't cleaned for a whole week, worn towels), but especially at the swimming pool (one of the dirtiest i've ever seen). Sure, when you have many rooms it's logical to expect many guests and quite a few would probably go to the pool... then the next obvious step would have been to do something about cleaning it better, but that's wishful thinking at this property. The pool itself is quite shallow, but long enough for laps if you're lucky enough not to have 20 people&kids inside.

The lock of my room was acting up a few times, even after 3 different people passed to do their magic & the batteries inside it were replaced... Having to walk back and forth all the way to the reception after a long hot day is not my idea of fun.

The English pub on the premises should have been a plus for those who don't shy from alcohol, but the one time I visited with a friend the air conditioner and cheesy music were blasted high and the nibbles were stale. Freezing, not being able to hear one's companion 30cm away and being overcharged for a drink - wonder why we were the only customers inside!?!

With so many guests, the breakfast also gets quite busy but food quality is good & I can understand if the waiters occasionally forget to bring you that hot coffee or tea - they have to run non-stop. Since that's the only thing they bring anyway, it may be better to give customers the option to make their own cuppa...

If you're still keen on staying at this hotel (there's an InterCon nearby), plan ample time for checkout because there could be a line of people waiting to do so at about the same time and you'll be wise to carefully inspect the bill. In my case, a man with a name tag "Ashraf" tried to bill me for minibar items that weren't even on offer in the minibar (i settled my bill a night before so I could still check the minibar contents) and then charged my credit card in its original currency instead of in Egyptian pounds, thereby adding an excessive forex commission (about 40 EUR more than what my bank would have added for forex conversion). The receipt has a statement along the lines "I certify that I was offered a choice of currency, including the local currency", but Mr Ashraf skipped that part and since he worked with the security billed to my card on arrival, I had no way of controlling what he did (my pin was punched in on arrival)... We live & learn new tricks, huh!

We have stayed in the Zamalek Marriott several times. This time we wondered whether the huge decline in tourism would affect our stay. No. It hasn't. We love our room with its panoramic views, the food standards have not gone down, and we are delighted to be here.
We are here in July and in the month of Ramadan. The weather has been surprisingly moderate (we ate outside along the promenade in front of the hotel enjoying cool Nile breezes) and Ramadan has not affected the level of service at all. In fact, it is a fun time to be in Cairo because everyone celebrates all night. There is nothing quite like the Khan al Khalili at Ramadan!
It seems a shame that tourists have let negative headlines affect their travel plans to Egypt. This is actually a very nice time to come. AND there are no tourists!

Room Tip: In summer it's nice to have an inside room in the Zamalek Tower, as high as possible. Great vie...

This hotel is fabulous. The hotel contrasts with the somewhat depressing Cairo. It is a luxury hotel with excellent service quality. The hotel is huge, has a wonderful pool area, surrounded with vegetation. It has a wonderful view of the Nile river. the staff is helpful and provides all kind of convenient info and access to area attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza, sights of old Cairo and Egyptian Museum of Antiquities and Cairo Opera House. I was told that it is Cair'os best hotel and I do think so.
