This is probably my favourite hotel in Cairo, great service, brilliant gym and pool and right in the centre of a nice area of Cairo where you feel safe in walking around outside the hotel. The only issue i had with it was that the tennis was so expensive, 45 euro for two hours on a slanty court with rent of rackets and balls.

Room Tip: I would go for the garden rooms next time as the "Nile View" rooms are not much of a view...

luxurious hotel, top hospitality. The garden cafe and restaurant are very nice place for dining and morning coffee. The rooms have good view of the Nile or the hotel gardens. As for conferencing, the hotel is spacious enough for several meeting rooms

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms give a better view of the gardens as well as the Nile. Also, I think the view fro...

This is my fourth time at this hotel. It is a central location to explore different parts of Cairo, also very secure. The central building is an old palace where you feel Royal just walking to reception. Rooms are located in two separate tower blocks. Wonderful gardens and green spaces for relaxing, dining or people watching. The pool is large and popular with Egyptian families on weekends. Very good gym, but no real 'spa' to speak of. The rooms are clean but dated, yet still comfortable. I have not woken that refreshed from a hotel bed in a long time. The hotel recently took a leap in 2013 by installing free wi-fi throughout. Long overdue and a very welcome addition. I definitely recommend this hotel if you want a safe, central location where you feel special.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors with Nile view.

The Royal Palace Al Gezira was built in 1869 as a guest palace for the Suez Canal inauguration and was home to Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. In 1970 it was taken over by the Marriott Corporation who restored the palace updating everything. Marriott built two high rises on either side of the original palace for the guest rooms and uses the original palace for reception, shops and restaurants. There are banquet rooms upstairs and a billiards parlor that was being restored while I was there. Due to some political unrest, the hotel was only one third occupied but that meant many of the staff would greet you by name each morning. Everyone was most friendly and welcoming making for a very enjoyable visit. Used by the US Department of State, the hotel is highly aware of security and every approaching vehicle is screened by bomb sniffing dogs prior to entry. Every entry door is manned by armed guards and everyone must pass through a metal detector similar to those used at most airports. The pool and gardens are lovely and restful though one needs to be careful of the sun. Some rooms include free internet and breakfast which usually costs $20 US but is very good and includes Egyptian fare as well as the usual omelettes, waffles and breads. The in room fridge is stocked with juices, water, candy etc but the cost is exorbitant. Every room is given one free bottle of water which I used for brushing teeth. That's not to say the in room water was bad but better safe than sorry for me. Harry's Pub, the on site drinking establishment offers mixed drinks as well as Egyptian beer which costs 42 Egyptian pounds, about seven US dollars, but comes with popcorn, nuts, cucumber slices and a dip of some sort. Walk across the boulevard to Drinkies, and the same beer is 7.5 Egyptian pounds so buy a few and put in your fridge. Be aware, Harry's also hosts numerous young "working" girls each evening busily chatting to the young men and leaving briefly. One minor problem at Marriott is the key card also works the elevators. A Gazera Tower key will not work in the Zamalek tower elevator. Likewise the Zamalek tower key won't work in the Gazera tower elevator. Likely a security issue however there were times my key would not work in my elevator so a fairly long walk back to reception for a replacement key could become annoying. All in all a fabulous stay and I would highly recommend Marriott Omar Khayyam.

Room Tip: Higher is better as road traffic is constant and every driver loves to blow their horn.

Stayed here from 2 April 2013 for 4 nights with my husband who is Egyptian. Wanted to stay in Zamalek and as I am Marriott Silver Elite member, chose this hotel. Wasn't disappointed. Decor is exquisite and rooms clean and comfortable. Dinner on our second night in Saraya Gallery was gorgeous but surprisingly akin to top London prices. That said the steak was of very high quality. Breakfast was extremely good and we had wonderful mornings eating on our balcony on the 19th floor which was amazing for views over the Nile. However, from reading reviews I have just realised that being on this floor should have entitled us to access to the Executive Lounge on the 18th floor which was not pointed out to us on check-in. I therefore spent a lot on breakfast, drinks and snacks during our stay which could have been saved or spent on other things! Response from Management please!!!! I am now feeling rather less happy about my stay than before!!!

Room Tip: High floor is a must as views are superb!

We were visiting our daughter, who is living for a year in Cairo. Because her flat is in Zamalek, we looked for hotels close to her and soon settled on the Marriott. What a beautiful hotel! We had an upper floor room overlooking the Nile. The room was clean, quiet (maybe because the hotel seemed at least half empty?) Breakfast was fine, with a good selection of different foods. But the best thing about the hotel is definitely the gardens. After a day of touring in Cairo, the noise, crowds, dirt, chaos, traffic --- stopping in the gardens was an instant escape. You really couldn't believe that outside those (well-secured gates) there was all of the craziness of Cairo.

The hotel staff was all professional, polite and accomodating.

We also ate at the "English" pub that is one of the hotel restaurants. Not really our first choice, but our daughter was craving "western" food. Anyway, it was perfectly acceptable, with decent food.

Any downsides? Just that (like everything in Cairo) it is a hard to get to because of traffic. And being on Zamalek, you have to fight the bridge traffic, too. But for a respite once you get through security, it is worth it. And, despite the fact that tourists seem to be shunning Egypt, the laws of supply and demand haven't made it to this hotel. It's still pretty expensive.

As delineated by others, this is a very large hotel with two towers that are each larger than most hotels and a huge shopping/restaurant complex in between with gardens and a large central pool complex. We stayed here for four nights and found the experience pleasant. However, since we live in Morocco and travel in the Middle East/North Africa region and this hotel is extremely cut off from the reality of Egyptian life.

That being said, it is comfortable and has all the amenities and the service you expect of a Marriott. We stayed here as part of a package deal with a tour company and were quite happy with our decision.

Our package included breakfast which was top notch; as to be expected in such a nice hotel. We also made use of the pool which was well maintained and quite warm.

As of March 2013 there is a new fitness center which is quite large and very nice with both free weights, nautilus equipment and lots of cardio.

A few of the restaurants are currently closed for renovation (as of mid-March 2013) and we ate both at the "Egyptian Nights" experience and the garden terrace restaurant and found to food to be good and the service to be average.

If you are looking for comfort and a sterile hotel experience for Cairo, this is for you.
