Novotel Cairo Airport
Ranked #31 of 139 Hotels in Cairo
Reviewed January 12, 2010

Basic airport hotel, the pictures on the Novotel homepage look a bit better than the real thing (surprise?), but overall a good place to stay overnight before taking an early morning flight. Shuttle bus complimentary.

Firstly, the hotels in Cairo are not great value for money, so if you expect standards similar to Europe or the US you will be very disappointed. With that said, the Novotel Cairo Airport was extremely adequate.

Nobody stays at an airport hotel for any other reason than it's proximity to the airport ?
On the plus side - You can see the Novotel sign from the terminal so surely that would be a good thing ? Wrong. The shuttle bus is every 30 mins so we stupidly tried to catch some other free shuttle bus which seemed to be exclusively full of locals. Nightmare. After about 7 stops inside the airport we got off whilst still in sight of the blue Novotel sign and legged it. Mistake - The footpaths in Cairo are like minefields. My advice would be to just get a taxi - for a couple of dollars - you can save yourself the hassle. We did this the following morning and felt much better for it.

When we finally did reach the hotel we found the staff very helpful and friendly. The room was a bit shabby but functional. The beds are the hardest ever. Even Mahatma Gandhi would agree. Surprisingly, we both slept like very tired logs - although this may have had something to do with our previous adventure trek from bus stop to hotel.

A pleasant surprise was the Italian restaurant in the hotel. Food was delicious and service was superb. There are three restaurants in total so it was a fair range. A taxi to somewhere in Heliopolis would be another option.

All in all Novotel Cairo Airport is not a bad choice (for an airport hotel) - just don't get your hopes to high and it'll be fine.

Cons:
* a hassle to get there
* damp rooms with old furniture that are not entirely clean
* high price for what you get
* staff do not really make you feel welcome

Pros:
* reasonable breakfast
* shuttle service back to the airport was ok

Stayed here, as so many people, in between flights.

Arrived late at night at the airport. Did not check how to get at the hotel beforehand. Taxi drivers there harass you, and only want to take you to the hotel for 50 dollars, even if you insist that you know it can only be 500 meters away.

Eventually ended up in the airport shuttle bus. The driver first did 2 laps around the
airport until all Egyptian passenger got of the bus. Next he asked us
for a tip. Feeling uncomfortable we did give him a small tip. But I
guess he was unhappy with the amount, as he stopped the bus about 500
meters away from the hotel, pointed at it and made us leave his bus
and walk the rest of the way.

Quality of hotel itself is comparable to most low-budget locations in Egypt. Except here you don't pay the low-budget prices....

This hotel thinks its good, but its not. Its overpriced and outdated. Its near to the airport but actually you have to work out that to catch the shuttle bus you have to go to a desk which is labelled with a completely different hotel name - sofitel. Staying here for business we had previously high expectations because it is 4 star. On arriving the lobby was great, but then on getting to the rooms it was clear from the old fashioned door mechanism it wasn't going to be a good experience. I only stayed one night but that was enough.

The service was minimal. We had prepaid for 2 twin bedded rooms with view of garden or pool. What we received were two 1 double bedded rooms with a sofa bed. When we checked in...we asked to confirm that we had two beds in each room...we were told by the front desk that we did. After a long walk through a very dirty and dingy corridor, we got to our rooms. We were too tired to go back downstairs and complain as we had to leave for the airport at 2:00 a.m. The bed sheets in our sons' room potato chips remnants in the sheets. The best thing about the hotel is the free airport shuttle. We used it from the airport to the hotel and from hotel to the airport. It runs every thirty minutes 24 hours a day.

We didn't expect much as we just needed a room for a flight lay-over, so our expectations were not that high. When we entered the lobby there was a hub of activity with open bars, restaurants and a wedding in oneof the first rooms. It was definitely not peaceful; it had a feel of a Vegas hotel - mixing everything together.

Good:
-The hotel grounds and pool were attractive and clean.
- There was a safe in the room

Ugly:
- The room was the old, outdated and very unappealing. They shoved a sofa-bed (that was old and ugly and needed to be thrown out) beside the bed and there was barely any room to walk. The cabinets and drawers were 30 years old and looked like they belonged in an old cabin. The pictures on the wall were askew to their frames - it was like some horror show.
- Although the bathrooms were decent, the carpets were disgusting.
- Internet $15 us/hour
- The bed mattress was very old and hard, but frankly quite comfortable. Something bit me, I presume bed bugs.
- No water - can't drink out of tap, but no water supplied.
- Worst buffet breakfast in all of the hotels we visited in Egypt.
