We spent 3 weeks in Egypt during April/May 2013. Like most we wanted to do a Nile cruise but not on one of the big vessels but something smaller and more personal. With the help of Select Egypt we booked a Dahabeya and we’re so glad that we did as it was one of the highlights of our trip, we enjoyed every moment. These boats are based on the old traditional sailing boats & offer a completely different sailing experience as they are sailing boats and do not have a motor. They do however have all of the other facilities that you would expect. The ability to berth at any suitable place along the river gives so much more flexibility in visiting the smaller sites which appealed to us. The boat is able to travel quite close to the banks of the river so you are able to see all the activity on the river bank as you drift by and really feel part of it all. It is just so quiet and tranquil – we just loved it.
We travelled on the Dahabeya ‘Amalia”’. The Captain and the entire crew were absolutely fabulous – nothing was too much trouble. There were lots of little treats along the way. We stopped for a wonderful candlelight dinner on an island in the middle of the Nile and enjoyed some amazing sunsets as well as visiting some of the other ancient sites. The food was good; you didn’t have to dress up for dinner. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere not too lavish or overdone.
We are happy to recommend this style of cruise and especially this particular boat which we booked through Select Egypt. Select were very easy to deal with. Their consultant Sandy look after us – we did everything from Australia via email to Sandy. There were no communication issues, she was very professional and we were very happy with the result. We had the same guide, Ahmed (Mido) throughout our stay in Egypt, he too was fabulous & we now regard him as a friend.
