I live around 300 meters from this place and would use it a lot more if the service was better.
The food is good - previous reviewers have summerised it well - try the circasian chicken, it's very good. I always bring visitors to Egypt here - as it is genuine Egyptian cooking. (Ten times the price that you would pay for eating the same from a street vendor, but it is rather pleasant suroundings).
Genuine Egyptian down to the very very relaxed service, especially in the outdoor area. If I have an evening to kill, then it is enjoyable place to go. However, if you want a quick meal then either go someplace else or bring sandwiches and order a beer. This is not a one off - I have been perhaps 10 times and the service does not change.
Its a shame as there are too few restaurants in the area where one can enjoy a beer with the food - and the food is really good. The presence of middle class locals prevents this becoming a tourist trap, and increases the "genuine Egyptian" feel of the place. It's not cheap, but for the experience, it is worth it. Go - if you have an evening to spare.

Food is some of the best local cuisine that you can get but this establishment has the lighting low so it can be hard to see what you're eating.

This is a good place to go to sample Egyptian home cooking in a restaurant environment. It's not to my taste, being a bit orientalist in style, but it doesn't scream 'tourist' either and the food and service are always nice. I recommend the pigeon stuffed with bulgur wheat.

The resto in Zamalek has a nice old middle eastern cafe ambiance and food to match. My kids struggled with the chicken that was served and though it was replaced they found it too tough/hard. the rest of the stuff was great !
