I am ashamed to say that this review is a year late, but I still remember the trip my husband and I took like it was yesterday. Samir was amazing. Very kind, accommodating, respectful, and professional. His knowledge of Egyptian history and culture knows no bounds. There is no way we could have managed a trip that was as in-depth or as "behind the scenes" as what Samir provided us. He even let me steal his horse from him during a sunrise ride around the pyramids, and was nothing but smiles as he rode my grumpy camel back to our starting point.

At our request, we went to one of those "carpet factories" that you see all the tourist buses stopping at, where we bought a small but expensive souvenir. Afterwards, in the car, here is the conversation that ensued:

Samir: How much did you pay?
Me: $200. (pause.) Did we get a good deal?
Samir (handing us the commission that the owner had slipped him after the sale): Here. NOW you got a good deal.

I can't recommend him enough.

Our family of 7 was in Egypt during the xmas season in Dec 2010, and under Real Egypt's guidance, this trip has been one of the best family trip we ever have!! Here's why:

1) Our personalised trip didn't start well with the fact that our flights from the UK was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and 6 of us are stuck in the UK for 3 more days. Our initial 16 day tour itinery was thrown into chaos (and i mean serious chaos...). To cut the long story short, Real Egypt has been absolutely brilliant in helping us to reorganise our itinery and ensuring that we miss out as little as possible. We are well aware that without Samir and his team's help, our trip could have been a seriously disastrous one...

2) The itinery organised by Real Egypt is comprehensive, educational, relaxing and has all we requested for and even more! we came to Egypt looking for cultural and historical understanding of the country and Real Egypt didn't let us down. The tours organised were interesting, the tour guides are knowledgable, enthusiastic and very engaging. We were always given the prerogative to dictate our itinery during the tour and Samir, who's been the main organiser would accommodate as much as possible and provide his honest opinion. I would say listen to what Real Egypt has to say about best restaurants, best places to shop, bargain prices etc etc. Throughout the trip, we felt safe in the hands of Samir and his team. They look out for you and even got our purchases in the bazaar down to local prices because of their negotiation skills.

3) Egypt's transport and site visits are a nightmare, given that almost all tourists visit the same pyramids, tombs, temples at the same time. We are glad to say that with our own guide (either Samir or his team), we managed to avoid the large crowds and get to see the sites at its best view at the best time. Now in my opinion, this, is worth more than anything else...

In summary, I can't say enough about how much I would strongly recommend Real Egypt if you are thinking of visiting Egypt. Much of what I wanted to say has been written about in the reviews below and to save myself repeating the same things, I find my Egypt experience all together a perfect holiday, thanks to Samir and his team.

- We traveled to Egypt with 3 young children and Samir customized our experience for everyone’s enjoyment. Among the many highlights of our visit were when our children joined a pick-up soccer game with local children in an alleyway of Cairo, toured a preschool in the Christian suburb of “trash city”, and competed in a Samir-led scavenger hunt in the halls of the Egyptian Museum. Samir’s knowledge, flexibility, demeanor and desire to teach and share Egyptian culture made him the perfect guide for us, and even though we knew him for only one week we consider him a friend instead of just our tour guide.
- In particular, my daughter Sabrina and I want to thank you for helping us understand the importance in the Muslim culture of keeping our hair covered. I appreciated you helping my daughter learn first hand, the importance of respecting and honoring a different culture and religion than her own. Of course we were mesmerized by Egypt’s incredible history that is still so alive at every turn, but equally, we were touched by modern Egypt and how culture and religion play such an important and beautiful role. As Americans, to spend two weeks in the middle East, we left feeling like we have so much in common with our brothers and sisters in Egypt– clearly more similarities than differences in our way of life. I knew this before our trip, but to experience it first hand, was pretty incredible.

Our family was in Egypt in December and we found Samir through TripAdvisor.

We spent 2 days with Samir and did the Egyptian Museum, city tour, Saqqara, Dashur, and Giza. Samir was extremely knowledgeable and made the tours fun as well. He is by far the best tour guide we've used on any trip we've taken.

In addition to the tours, Samir arranged a guide for us in Luxor as well as transportation in Sharm el Sheikh. His services were invaluable and we truly enjoyed our time with him.

Samir also followed up with us in Luxor to make sure our experiences in Luxor exceeded our expectations. He took care of all the details for us.

If we find ourselves in Cairo again, I will definitely call Samir first!

The short feedback on Real Egypt is ... use them as they were brilliant. The long feedback is this:

1. Views on travelling in Egypt
Egpyt is often perceived as being a difficult place to travel in and hard to get organised from overseas for the uninitiated.

As older travellers we didn't want to 'go it alone' in Egypt with all the hassles of booking accommodation and tours from abroad (and travelling without any knowledge of arabic language) but we also didn't want to join a big tour where our days would be more regimented. Egypt, for us, was part of a longer tour of Europe and Asia that we had planned and booked ourselves but doing this for Egypt (for what we wanted to do) looked too much of a hassle.

In sum, we wanted flexibility and simplicity but with security.

2. What we were looking for
We were interested in visiting Egypt to see the history and culture of the country and to get a more genuine impression of the country. We didn't want to have a visit that was too rushed and wanted to do things more at our own pace. Also, our budget was limited and for this part of our trip we saw ourselves as 'flash-packers' where we would be happy with more modest but clean accomodation in order to spend more of our trip budget on a higher quality cultural experience.

3. Initial organisation
We chose Real Egypt after a fairly lengthy process of searching Trip Advisor, other forum sites on travelling Egypt and generally searching the internet.

Real Egypt stood out as providing a good mix of a company that would organise the whole trip for us (including allowing for free days) but also provide an individualised service where our needs would be met ... and within a reasonable budget. What appealed to us was the ability to pick and choose and organise our own personalised trip rather than searching through the pre-set bulk tour itineraries of large tour operators (which also all seemed to look much the same).

We intially contacted Samir via his web site and he was very quick to respond. His goal wasn't to sell us a 'package' but to understand what kind of trip we wanted and what sort of budget expectations we had. In a too-and-fro email exchange we developed an itinerary that we were happy with. From this early contact we got the impression that he really listened to our needs, made suggestions he thought would suit, and he wasn't tryng to get us to do things that we didn't want to do. Samir also suggested things we hadn't considered, such as staying in an apartment in the West bank of Luxor. We were plain about our budget goals and were happy with the range of acitivites that we were going to receive. He came across as, and proved to be, entirely trustworthy.

3. What we did
Our 10 day itinerary included 2 days in Cairo (including pyramids at Saqqara, Dahshour, Giza, citadel, city of the dead, and a walking tour in medieval Islamic Cairo). Then, sleeper train to Aswan (High Dam, unfinished obelisk, Philai Temple), and a 3 day cruise on the Nile to Luxor stopping at temples on the way. We spent 2 days in Luxor visiting the west and east bank valleys and staying in an apartment overlooking the Nile. Then, back to Cairo by sleeper train for 2 days (Gold Island walk and shopping day at the big Khan al-Khalili market). We visited the Egyptian museum too.

4. How we found it
What struck us most was how wonderful it was to have an individualised tour that included a tour guide all to ourselves in each place. In Cairo, Samir was our guide and organised everything down to the last detail for us. In Aswan and for the Nile cruise, we were accompanied by another very knowledgeable English speaking guide (Islam) and Samir looked after us when we returned to Cairo.

We didn't fully appreciate how good it was to have personal guides in all these places until we went to temple complexes where there were either couples wandering around looking lost ('I think that might be a bird'!) or large groups traipsing after one guide with those at the back looking quite bored. With our guides we were able to freely ask questions, pause anywhere for the obligatory tourist photos, and they were able to gauge what we understood and tailor things for us. Also, we could quickly change things as needed.

Another example of their expertise springs to mind with our visit to a particular tomb in the Valley of the Kings. We were asked to go quite early. On going to one special tomb we had to climb a metal staircase outside of over 100 steps and then around the corner there was a queue of about 6 people waiting their turn to go into the tomb. We had to wait 5 minutes!! When we came out, the queue had grown back around the corner, all the way down the 100+ steps and further ... it was moving slowly and people were moving up the staircase one step at a time! They must have had to wait for over an hour in the sun to get into that tomb.

What we also appreciated about walking around with a guide was that the roaming touts and those at the shop stalls mainly left us alone. We saw many tourists spending a lot of time fending off time-wasting trinket sellers. Of course, when we wanted to buy a tourist book, our guide gave us advice and got us the best price!

On the second to last day in Cairo we wanted to go and do some tourist shopping at the Khan al-Khalili bazaar and Samir suggested that his wife, Hala, might want to help us. She loves shopping and was brilliant at pointing out the best shops and helping us with the bargaining. She was solely there to help us and consequently we got a lot of shopping done in a short space of time, [Thanks again Hala, we really enjoyed our time with you]

With other tours we have been on in other countries, they frequenetly involved unscheduled stops to factories, and higher-priced tourist jewellery shops etc. Samir pointed out from the start that none of our tours would do this unless we expressly asked for it. So, we saw the sights that we wanted to see with as few distractions as possible (and shopped when we wanted).

5. Problems of travelling in Egypt
There is no way any tourist, no matter what tour company they use or what budget they have, will get through their tour in Egypt without any complications or problems. Egypt is an amazing place but it is still a developing nation and the infrastructure and population conjestion reflects this. At times we were caught in traffic jams (reminding us of Bangkok and Hanoi) and plumbing and rubbish came to our attention a few times. As experienced tourists, we are used to allowing a considerate level of give and take, and in Egypt expect to do this and a little bit more.

However, the beauty of our indivudalised tour was that the guides helped us to avoid most of these issues, smoothed them over or fixed the problems as they arose. If we were travelling alone these issues would have consumed a lot of energy and time that ultimately would have come out of the precious time we would have wanted to spend enjoying ourselves. And, when we had time alone it was reassuring that Samir was at the end of a phone at any time just in case any more serious problems might have arisen.

6. General impresisons
What our tour with Real Egypt gave us was a fascinating cultural experience with knowledgable one-to-one guides and with a whole layer of planning and day-to-day stress taken from us so that we could enjoy what we went to do ... see the real Egypt.

Don't forget to take a good sunhat, sunblock, comfortable walking shoes, a small bottle of water, a small torch and snacks with you on each tour. We also noted, and this is our personal preference, that people either took cameras that were too small (e.g., phone cameras or compacts) or too big (we took a photo for someone and I could barely hold their camera up as it was so heavy - not great for walking long distances comfortably). We settled on a Panasonic Lumix FZ 35 digital camera that was very light, not too big, had high resolution, an 18 x good zoom (just essentail for high tempyle photos) and has a great 'intelligent' mode for those of us who don't have time to read the manual!! Another thing we noticed at our hotels was that many people carried around large latops. We were planning to take our Mac laptop too but it was too big and heavy for this sort of trip. So we settled on a cheap netbook (e-Machine) and moved into the 'disablity' settings to crank up the file name sizes etc for our aging eyes! It was great - we Skyped without any problems, used email, took a large music collection (with small USB powered speakers it was good to have one's music in the hotel room), surf the net etc. And, it had an SD card slot so we could back up and view our many photos from each day (we learned this lesson the hard way after losing a big chunk of photos from a previous holiday when the SD card crashed irreparably). We would probably go for an iPad (v2) in the future.

In sum, we would highly recommend Real Egypt for your holiday to Egypt if you like to do your own thing, with one-to-one guides and help, and tailored to your budget. And, the bottom line for this company is to be upfront, honest and trustworthy. That's a refreshing experience for us!! Overall we feel that Real Egypt provided much more than we expected (for the amount we budgeted), and provded us with an experience of Egypt that highlighted its rich culture, history and wonderfully friendly people.

Thanks again Samir, Hala, Islam (and others) for a most enjoyable holiday and we hope to see you again soon.
