We took a 7 Day Nile cruise on the Royal Viking Nov 2012. The cruise was a present from our daughter . Although we are fairly well traveled this type of holiday was a new experience for us both.
We had an upper deck room which was brilliant both comfortable and quiet, the "towel art" each day was a nice touch. Food was good all week and the standard of hygiene can only be described as exceptional, kitchen and dining room were spotless and all passengers had to use an anti bacterial gel on their hands before entering the dining room for each meal.
The Guide assigned to our group (Ahmed) was superb helpful and extremely knowledgeable and really made the trip special..The entertainment most evenings was a nice addition and we were lucky to meet some great people. All the excursions were well planned and we will never forget the sunrise over the desert on our way to Abu Simbal (it was a long coach drive but worth it).
Couple of things which may help others:
Take some Egyptian change if you can get hold of it (tipping loo attendants on visits)
Good walking shoes and hat are a must have
There is no coffee/Tea in the room, small kettle and the "makings" would have been good for a morning cuppa in the room
The light show visit at Karnak was fabulous
Be prepared for the Hawkers on the visits they are very persistent, anyone who offers any and I mean any help (no matter how small) at the Temples expects a Tip
Would we do it again "you bet we would" it was great, not sure if the daughter will cough up again but it was the present of a lifetime.
Hope this helps.

I am writing this review on my return flight from Luxor to Gatwick after one of the best holidays ever on the MS Grand Rosé Nile Cruise.

We booked the package through Red Sea Holidays and chose this particular vessel after several excellent Trip Advisor reviews dating from 2010 to 2012. Unfortunately doubts started to creep in after reading more recent reviews by a couple of disgruntled travellers who have obviously conspired to write negative comments and give the boat a totally unfounded one star rating. Harsh!
What do these people want?
For under £600 we were pampered on an all inclusive basis from start to finish and taken on well organised excursions to several important temples and historic sites including the Valley of the Kings, boat trips down the Nile, and the Aswan Dam. Early starts were offset by early finishes and the chance to relax in the afternoon. We felt SAFE at all times despite the troubles in Cairo.
The reps were approachable, friendly and knowledgable. The crew members and staff were approachable, friendly and efficient. The cabin cleaners were approachable, friendly and surprised us every day with some unbelievable towel art!
Our cabins weren't quite 5 star, but charmed in a sort of Agatha Christy style, offering everything we needed such as comfortable beds, ample wardrobe space and a functional bathroom.
We enjoyed 3 meals a day, free drink, first class service and theme nights showcasing traditional entertainment. The Egyptian night was particularly funny, but only for the people who entered into its spirit by dressing up accordingly; and there we have the secret of enjoying yourself on this type of holiday.
The passengers were split between German and British with a few Scandinavians thrown in. The majority (I will let you guess who) mixed well, throwing themselves into the excursions and entertainment, and consequently all had a great time. The minority kept themselves to themselves, compared everything to a Caribbean cruise which cost four times this one and they consequently enjoyed the holiday four times less. I'm willing to bet that the previous negative reviewers fell into the latter category!
Obviously some aspects of Egypt are less than perfect. You will be hassled at every opportunity but will lean to deal with it after a few days. Alongside the traders you will see mothers and children begging for money, but what's wrong with giving them a few pence every now and again? You will see animals that aren't looked after as well as Rover or Tiddles is back home - so keep what's left of your oversized packed lunch and give it to the stray dogs which hang around the temples. We also refused the horse and carriage ride and complained to the rep about one or two of the horses hired for the trip.
In summary: Egypt is a fantastic place if you know what to expect, and if you are contemplating a Nile Cruise do yourself a favour and go for it with a positive attitude. You will enjoy the experience as much as you allow yourself to!

We were on the Viking Princess over chritmas and what a wonderful holiday this was. We booked through Discover Egypt and could not fault them at all everything was very well organised. The boat itself was lovely spotless clean the staff were really friendly and helpful the food was exellent with plenty of choice, the gala dinner on xmas eve was beautiful the chefs had really gone to town the displays of fruit, bread and desserts were amazing they must of really worked hard. They were really keen on cleanliness you had to use hand sanitisor before entering the dining room each time, and I dont think anybody got sick. The trips were great visited some amazing places valley of the kings & queens, Karnak, Luxor temple to name a few. The only trip we paid for was Abu Simbel which was a 3 o clock wake up call and a 3 hour drive escorted through the desert but definately worth the price and the early start. The cabin was only small but very clean the bathroom also small but the shower was very good,we loved going into the cabin everynight to see what we would find on the bed in the way of towel art we had crocoodiles, swans, candles even a man one night it was very artistic. Mohamed was our tour guide a lovely happy young man,he was very knowledgeable and really good fun he made our holiday. We were only a small group of 13 and we all got on really well this included 3 people who had gone on their own but every body intergrated and I wouldnt hesitate about going as a single. The galabaya night on the boat was real good fun and I dont think there was anybody who didnt take part, a great way to get to know people, as was the treasure hunt, again Mohamed was full of fun getting everybody involved and up belly dancing. The manager on the boat invited the guests who wanted to to have a tour of the kitchen and engine room, which I did and was amazed that the kitchen was only small and how they ever got all the food done in there I will never know, needless to say it was spotless clean,as was the engine room. The only fault I could find with the holiday was you got hassled all the time the traders are very persistant, I would of loved to have a browse in their shops but they would just not leave you alone, they are desperate for tourists to go to their country as since the revolution they have diminished but I honestly would say go we had no problem at all and would thoroughly recommend Egypt and the Nile Cruise.

Have just returned from a 7 night nile river cruise on the Jaz Regency. When filling in the customer feedback questionnaire onboard we tried very hard to find some negative feedback but the most we could muster was 'more choice of coffee'! Although we then found out that we had been asking for 'coffee' and we could have asked for 'cappuccino' or 'latte' and gotten them! On well.....never mind it didnt detract from a wonderful trip. The staff were exceptionally attentive although it probably helped that there were only 28 passengers onboard. After being concerned regarding 'nile belly' none of our party got sick at all and if we had there was an onboard doctor. When we booked this through a travel agent we specificially asked about a doctor and were told there wasn't one!

We booked through a travel company (Thomsons) and they had a rep living onboard (Mohamed) Ali. Excellent service from him, very professional, very friendly and everything was extremely well organised. The guide for our week was Mohamed. Excellent enthusiasm, knowledge and affability. We really didn't realise how much knowledge we had acquired from him until the car ride home when we started telling my husband (who hadn't accompanied us) a plethora of facts about Egypt. Certainly well worth a visit and the people are desperate for tourists to come (their main income) and enjoy yourselves.

The only down side would be the hassle from traders but if you keep your head down, walk quickly, don't engage in conversation you can get by without incident. None of these peddlars were threatening just persistant but you can understand there plight as there is major poverty in Egypt currently with visitor numbers down. Please visit it is well worth it and extremely interesting.

After a hectic 3 day stay in Cairo a Nile Cruise was just what the doctor ordered. The MS Magic 1 is well named, it really did work magic. The Magic was very clean and comfortable and the itinerary was spot on. Lots to see and places to go but also loads of chilling out time. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome, Our tour guide Galal was wonderful and so patient. He was happy to answer any and all questions and was great company. Thanks to you all for a very special holiday.
