“Great location, great value, great breakfast!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2009

Overall a very good choice when visiting Seoul. Right on the 6015 airport bus route from Incheon (9,000 Won). They will announce the hotel name in English so no concern about missing your stop. Pickup from same location.

Lobby and restaurant is on 19th floor with great views. Room was a little small with only half of the outside wall having a window. Bath only had a shower. Also arrived around 10pm and wound up with a smoking room for the first night, which isn't my preference but in this case wasn't bad enough to need to switch rooms the next day.

Inexpensive guest self-serve laundry (1,000 Won for a dryer). Free and good quality internet using a cable (not wireless). Also computers and a printer in the lobby (paper 100 Won / page at the lobby desk).

Buffet breakfast had a wide selection of western food and everything tried was good quality.

Fitness center was disappointing. Only a few treadmills and a few other pieces of equipment. (Time permitting there are great running and cycling trails along the Han River but it isn't that close to the hotel).

Location is great. Right across the street from the flagship Lotte department store (good food court on the B1 level). Walking distance to the cable car to N Seoul Tower (7,000 Won return, plus tower admission). Also walking distance to Insadong district (souvenirs, art, antiques) and the Namdaemun and Myong-dong shopping areas. For other destinations the excellent Seoul subway is a short walk north (get a T-Money smart card for easy on/off access).

Overall would stay here again.

Stayed here for 4 nights. While the room was a little small, it had everything necessary to enjoy my stay. Good value and in the heart of Myeong Dong!!

We had limited time in Seoul and my husband left a day before me. I wanted an affordable hotel with a clean room within walking distance of sites and nightlife. This hotel provided everything we needed, including a good sized room with great views, the much-beloved Japanese toilet, and a comfortable bed.

Our room looked out on the Myeong-dong shopping area with it's large shopping stores and dazzling neon signs. The room itself was quiet and the curtains shut out the bright lights when they were a distraction. Breakfast was not included but we opted for their buffet breakfast and it was very good, with both Korean and western dishes. The view from the restaurant, on the 19th floor, is great.

Walking out of the hotel you are opposite Lotte department store. When we were there they were celebrating their 40th anniversary and each night they had different entertainment, including dancers hanging from ropes dancing on the side of the building. Take a right turn down one of the side streets and you'll find a bustling nightlife with outdoor vendors, stores, restaurants and bars. No problem with finding something to do.

A short and enjoyable walk to the festive Insadong strip. Lots of vendors and shops ranging from antiques, master-craftsman artisans, pottery, books, and souvenir stands and malls. Sure there's a lot of the same thing, but if you look deeper you can find unique pieces that will make memorable treasures from your trip. About 10 minutes walk from the top of Insadong strip is Changdeokgung Palace, with it's famed 'secret garden.' Between the hotel and Insadong the city has developed a riverlet into a promenade. Especially brilliant at night, it's a romantic walk for couples, with lighting arrangements changing every block or so, culminating in lit waterfall at on end.

Because our time was very limited, we opted for one of the on-off buses that provided us with a flavor of different parts of the city, including great views from the Seoul Tower hill. It was a little difficult to find (we were running late for the bus departure time).

Checkout was early in the AM and I was on the first shuttle bus to the airport. It was pouring, but luckily the bus stop is almost directly in front of the hotel. There were issues with the staff giving different times for the first shuttle, but I believed what I saw on the bus stop and I was not wrong. Had I listened to the front desk person or the doorman (he wanted me to wait inside) I would have missed the bus. It didn't stop and wait for longer than a minute or two.

The rooms are small as mentioned in other reviews but adequate. They are nice, clean and very reasonably priced. On arrival I could see their tripadvisor award on proud display in reception and I think all things considered it's deserves it.
The location for sightseeing in Seoul is very good and the Korean people are so friendly and helpful. They made such a fuss of our 5 month old daughter and strangers would stop us on the street to coo over her. This was lovely for first few days but did get a little wearing as you literally couldn't go into a shop without wanting to talk and make noises at her. I can't believe I'm moaning about people being nice and welcoming as they were very sweet. You can get by on just speaking English but a few Korean phrases wold have been handy. During the day it's good to see the tourist sights and then in the evening the street markets very near the hotel come alive with hustle and bustle and neon!
Seoul is a great place to visit and wish we'd stayed over another day. The hotel even offers a shuttle bus which goes twice a day for free and will drop you at a choice of 1 of 5 tourist spots and you then make your own way back. The standards at this hotel are high and the cost is reasonable so I would stay again.

Stayed here for 3 nights from 2nd Nov and location was perfect! Very central and within walking distance to all main attractions. From Icheon airport, the 6015 bus drops you right outside the hotel and only costs 9,000 KRW. Journey time is approx 1 hour from airport and 1.15 from hotel to airport. Buses run every 15-20mins and drivers are very helpful/efficient.

Myeong-Dong is shopping heaven for all shopaholics!! There are plenty of underground shopping malls and the Lotte department store is right opposite the hotel. The food hall at Lotte is fantastic if you're new to Korean food and nervous about trying food in local restaurants.

The hotel offers a free shuttle bus service to all major attractions and runs daily at 10am and 3pm but a seat has to booked in advance at reception. I used it a number of times but also found the underground system very safe, cheap and easy to navigate. Buy a T-money card and load it up with KRW and use it as a "pay as you go" travel card (same concept as London's Oyster card). Each journey is approx 900 KRW (50p GBP).

The hotel room is pretty basic (as you would expect from an Ibis) but a good size for Asian standards. The room is clean and vending machines for filtered water are available on each floor. There is no mini bar in the room but a small fridge to store a few drinks/snacks. There is a safe in the room which is very handy for personal possessions. Breakfast at the hotel is 13,000 KRW but is expensive considering lunch/dinner in most Korean restuarants is around 7,000-9,000 KRW. There are plenty of small coffee shops/cafes outside the hotel so I would recommend that.

At around 6-7pm in the evening, the street food traders and market stalls line the street close to the hotel. Be sure to try some of the food! It was fantastic and even better that it didn't give me an upset tummy!

My top recommendations for sight seeing are as follows (in no particular order):

1) Insadong
2) Nante Theatre show
3) Miso musical at the Chongdong theatre
4) Namdaemun Market
5) Gyoungbukgung Palace
6) Ewha womens university
7) City Hall

For places to eat, I found this site helpful:
http://www.seoulstyle.com/food.htm

If you're worried that your luggage might be over weight, the hotel have scales that you can use to weigh suitcases. Just wheel your suitcase down to reception and someone will help you. I found the scales to be very accurate when comparing to the scales used at the airport upon check-in.

One downside I found at the hotel is that they didn't provide a price list of how much international call charges are or made you aware of it. I used the phone in my room twice and when I checked out and saw the bill, I was appalled/disgusted by the rates. It was GBP £2 a minute to call London!!
I have stayed in numerous hotels across the world, most of which are 4-5 stars and never been charged rates like that. When I told the receptionist that the charges were outrageous, he simply said "you could have used a calling card and called from one of the phones in the lobby". My response: "yes, well its a little late for that now and why wasn't I told??". His response was "we cannot change the calling rates madam".
That was the first instance of bad service I experienced at the hotel. Other than that, most the staff are very helpful and polite.

After reading many reviews from Tripadvisor, I gave it a go with this hotel. I never regretted it. We stayed here for 4 nights on 22 Oct after a 6 nights tour of Korea Located next to Myeongdong shopping area, Naedaemun Market, opposite Lotte Department Store, Young Lotte and Avenuel... Shinagae is also not far away. If shopping is your thing, this hotel suits you shopaholics. (don't bring too many clothes or cosmetics with you). Buy them in Seoul. The hotel is also surrounded by many eatery outlets. The only problem is which one do you choose.

Room is small but it was comfortable. Bathroom is small too but it was fine. No amenities are available. You'll need to purchase from a dispenser but there is a hairdryer available. There is a minibar fridge but no items to purchase. There is a safety deposit box in the room. Oh! internet is free in all rooms, just bring your own laptop. The staff are friendly in the Reception area who speak good English. I recommend that you ask the Reception for directions instead of the information desk on the ground floor. BTW, Reception area is on the 19th floor.

Airport Limousine pick up/drop off is right outside the hotel (first pick up is Hotel Ibis Myeongdong). The bus comes every 20 minutes. The fare costs 9000 Won each way. I suggest that you catch the bus early, give at least 2 hours lead time before your departure time. 'Cos the bus stops at least 10 pick ups along the way.

Overall, excellent stay at Hotel Ibis Myeongdong. We'll be back!

I liked this hotel due to its location. The area is plenty of restaurants and is the best for shopping. In front of the hotel is Lotte Department store, a huge building with 10 or more restaurants, full of fashion items and a food market in the basement. The hotel is close to the subway, and the bus for Incheon airport stops at the door of the hotel. On the bad side, I think the hotel could be cleaner, not the restaurant, but the rooms. The restaurant and breakfast are good with western, Korean and Japanese food, and the views from there are fantastic, from the 19th floor, the same where the reception is.
