Haemil Hanok Guesthouse
Ranked #69 of 959 Seoul B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 20, 2013

1) Excellent service by the couple who runs the guesthouse. Both of them made us feel very welcomed. Loved the variety of home-cooked breakfast as well as the thoughtful snacks/ teas/ beverages served.

2) Great location! Almost opposite the Changdeokgung Palace. It's about 10 mins walk from Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3 - Orange line). 10-15 mins walk to Insadong. 15-20 mins walk from JongNo-3 where there were many restaurants to choose from as well as street vendors. Walk further up to JongNo-5 and it is already a skip and hop from Dongdaemun.

3) Do get your Nanta tickets booked by the couple who runs the guesthouse. That way you will enjoy some discounts on the ticket price. Bring their business card to the Nanta ticketing counter for verification. Same goes if you intend to visit Nami Island.

4) Bathroom is compact and provided towels may be considered small by visitors. Adviced to bring own towel. Shower gel, Shampoo & Conditioner as well as a moderately powerful hair dryer were provided.

5) At least 3 convenience shops were nearby. We went to the GS25 shop almost daily to get yogurt, icicles/popsicles, ramyun, Pocari Sweat (Isotonic drink). The mini fridge in the room was certainly appreciated. [GS25 not only carries a variety of food and drinks but also sells travellers necessities e.g. socks, phone cables. You may use the T-Card to pay for purchases].

6) If you'd like to have a cuppa, a small kettle is provided in each room.

7) The air-cond was most needed as the temperature was above 32 degree Celcius when we arrived (August 2013).

8) Need to rest and watch some TV? Each room has a flat screen tv. [There's AXN and FOX channels if you want to watch some English language entertainment].

9) There is a small laundry room where the washing machine is located but no dryer. All laundry needs to be hung out to dry.

I would highly recommend Heamil Guesthouse! In fact, I plan on staying there the next time I visit Seoul!

This is the real thing. A little traditional home with light wood walls and sliding paper panels, tucked very snuggly into a well-situated quiet backstreet. The room has no bed. You sleep on thick quilts on the hardwood floor, which is all part of the experience. We got used to it after two nights, but found ourselves strategically folding the bottom quilts over double and tripple because they weren`t thick enough for us. We asked for an extra quilt, and if we had it to do again, we might bring our own yoga mats or something to give a little bit more cushion. I rated the sleep quality `average` below, but it is more an assessment of our ability to live like the locals than any deficiency on their part.
The aircon worked well, which was good because the weather in Seoul in the summer is quite muggy.
The bathroom was immaculate but teensy-weensy. I think all hotel rooms and people`s homes are pretty squashed in the city, and lodging is very expensive.
Our hosts were really adorable, very helpful and informative. They made breakfast for us, and every morning was a surprise. Sometimes it was western style, with eggs and bacon, sometimes curried vegetables, and once sushi, which was strange to us in the morning but delicious. The location is very convenient to many of the main sights and bus and metro lines.
The one real problem we had was that there wasn`t a clothes dryer on the premises. They have a washing machine, but then we had to hang the clothes to dry either in our room, which took up space, or in a separate room. Because it didn`t stop raining the whole time we were there, it wasn`t possible to hang the clothes in the courtyard, which is what they usually do.

Although a little tricky to find (it's tucked away in a tiny, inaccessible by vehicles, alleyway), Haemil worked out perfectly for us. We wanted to stay in a Hanok to get a more authentic experience than a typical hotel. Since we were a family of 4 with 2 young children, we got the largest room, SAN. It was very nicely furbished and clean. The beddings were very nice and clean with good quality duvet. If you're not use to sleeping on thin futons on the floor, I suggest you double it up. Although there were 4 futons provided we found that we only really need 3 and use the 4th to double up on the top for more cushioning. We actually placed 1 of the futon on top of the red & yellow sofa seating futon and our 8 yr old slept on that. The bathroom is tiny and simple but everything works quite well. I'm use to the shower in the same area as toilet set up coming from Thailand where you often find this set up in the rural areas often times. Roll with it, even if you're not use to it. It's really not that bad. The A/C also worked very well as we were there beginning of July. The breakfasts provided were delicious and the lady who runs the place does a great job. It's all Korean food which is as it should be if you're coming for the authentic experience staying in a hanok. She also was a great resource helping us make decisions about where to go each day. We had done our research and had a short list of what we wanted to see but it was great to have someone local give us some additional advice. She helped book our tickets to go see a NANTA show as well. Luckily, my husband (not Korean) can speak Korean and so we had an easy time getting around everywhere. The location of Haemil is fantastic and became apparent as we went out and came back each day. Changdeokgung Palace is less than 5 mins walk away and Insadong is also walking distance. All in all a fantastic experience and would recommend Haemil to anyone.

The owner couple are very nice and helpful! And we really appreciated the oppotunity to experience the Korean traditional house. Since we are Chinese, the lady prepared noodle soup for our breakfast, it was very nice and thoutful!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Haemil Guesthouse. The couple who run the guesthouse were very welcoming and provided us with a variety of complementary Korean teas and snacks during our stay. They prepared a great breakfast, served in the comfortable living room. Our double room was cosy and comfortable, with good facilities for the room price, with a compact en-suite shower room and fridge to keep refreshments. This small guesthouse also has a patio area, and I found it a peaceful place to stay away from the main roads. It is also located only a few minutes walk from the Seoul subway, shops, restaurants, and places to visit. The quality and value of this homestay was excellent.

Room Tip: The double room (Baram) is quiet and comfortable.

We stayed in the the Haemil Guesthouse for five nights. The young couple who run the place made us feel very welcome and served us tea and little snacks free of charge during our stay. They also cleaned our rooms daily. I would say that this was the best and kindest service I have experienced in my travels so far.

The room was very clean and compact but very cozy and had a small en-suite bathroom. In the room we had a lovely korean style chest of drawers and a little fridge as well as a tv. A kettle along with a small selection of teas and instant coffee and a jar of tasty biscuits were in the room as well. Free wifi was available everywhere in the guesthouse. Because the haemil has only three rooms and lies away from the main road it is very quiet which makes for a good nights' sleep.

We also had access to the shared living room at any time where we could use the water purifier for hot or cold water, get brewed coffee or, if we wanted too, use the microwave or the computer. Breakfast was served between 8am and 10am, and was really tasty (something different every day, mostly Korean food, sometimes western style). We ate Korean style, sitting on comfy cushions on the floor at a low table. We could also sit in the little courtyard on at a garden table to relax after a lot of sight seeing.

I can recommend the Haemil Guesthouse for anyone who wants to experimence a traditional Korean hanok homestay in the heart of Seoul. :)

We arrived by airport bus at 10:30pm. Because the Haemil provides IMPECCABLE DIRECTIONS on their website, we were on the correct bus, got off at the correct stop, and walked 3 minutes just as they said they would, to their door. Kim wanted to go out for hamburgers, so he kindly walked us a few blocks to a bar that served fried chicken. He helped us order and then left us to a delicious meal, washed down with beer while we watched the nighttime soap along with the proprietor. To say that we wouldn't have found this place (right near the Rice Museum) without Kim is an understatement.
The Haemil is basic. Warm and and cosy with a thin futon, a good pillow, and a big comforter on a heated floor. The shower is minimal but the water is hot. Breakfast is basic. A twin (two futon) room was $67 per night and we had a host who took really good care of us in a clean and tidy hanok.
The Haemil is convenient to the Palace, an easy walk to Insadong and Bukcheon. For something fancier, you might try the Bukchon Guest House.
