Haemil Hanok Guesthouse
Ranked #59 of 958 Seoul B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We stayed in the the Haemil Guesthouse for five nights. The young couple who run the place made us feel very welcome and served us tea and little snacks free of charge during our stay. They also cleaned our rooms daily. I would say that this was the best and kindest service I have experienced in my travels so far.

The room was very clean and compact but very cozy and had a small en-suite bathroom. In the room we had a lovely korean style chest of drawers and a little fridge as well as a tv. A kettle along with a small selection of teas and instant coffee and a jar of tasty biscuits were in the room as well. Free wifi was available everywhere in the guesthouse. Because the haemil has only three rooms and lies away from the main road it is very quiet which makes for a good nights' sleep.

We also had access to the shared living room at any time where we could use the water purifier for hot or cold water, get brewed coffee or, if we wanted too, use the microwave or the computer. Breakfast was served between 8am and 10am, and was really tasty (something different every day, mostly Korean food, sometimes western style). We ate Korean style, sitting on comfy cushions on the floor at a low table. We could also sit in the little courtyard on at a garden table to relax after a lot of sight seeing.

I can recommend the Haemil Guesthouse for anyone who wants to experimence a traditional Korean hanok homestay in the heart of Seoul. :)

We arrived by airport bus at 10:30pm. Because the Haemil provides IMPECCABLE DIRECTIONS on their website, we were on the correct bus, got off at the correct stop, and walked 3 minutes just as they said they would, to their door. Kim wanted to go out for hamburgers, so he kindly walked us a few blocks to a bar that served fried chicken. He helped us order and then left us to a delicious meal, washed down with beer while we watched the nighttime soap along with the proprietor. To say that we wouldn't have found this place (right near the Rice Museum) without Kim is an understatement.
The Haemil is basic. Warm and and cosy with a thin futon, a good pillow, and a big comforter on a heated floor. The shower is minimal but the water is hot. Breakfast is basic. A twin (two futon) room was $67 per night and we had a host who took really good care of us in a clean and tidy hanok.
The Haemil is convenient to the Palace, an easy walk to Insadong and Bukcheon. For something fancier, you might try the Bukchon Guest House.

Owners are lovely, helpful And really make you feel welcome. Large clean rooms with heated flooring. Bathrooms are stocked well and are interesting , the bathroom is the shower (as in you don't have a stall the room is the shower) English speaking hosts that really try to please. Lovely experience and worth the bus trip , very close to airport bus stop and shopping. Great experience , nice breakfast and quiet location. The walls are traditional paper sliding doors so expect some noise from guests , however only three rooms so never over the top

I stayed one night in this lovely hanok two days ago. The location is good. It is walking distance to the palaces, shopping & most tourist areas. The subway is also conveniently nearby. The room is spacious and has every amenity you could want. Although our private bathroom is small, it is very clean and located inside the room (it is very important when the weather is so cold). The hosts are friendly and helpful. Rates are reasonable and free wifi is available.
When I was researching hanok guesthouse for this trip, I saw some people mentioning about the noise of traditional hanoks as their walls and doors are made by paper. But probably because this guesthouse has only three rooms, we did not experience any problem. It was quiet at night and we only heard other people's conversation after we woke up in the morning. If you want to have a traditional hanok experience, I highly recommend this guesthouse to you.

I stayed one night and can't wait to go back! The location is great being so close to the cafes and palaces. We also found the food and bar options were awesome around Anguk and all within walking distance of the guesthouse. Hwanee (host) and her husband were very welcoming and made our stay extremely comfortable - and they shared some of the history behind the renovated house. A great place to see the real Seoul!
