“The Plaza Hotel, Seoul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

Our family of 10 persons stayed with The Plaza Seoul from 28 to 31 Dec 2012. We were impressed when we first arrived at the entrance of the hotel. The bell captain started greeting us and assisted us with the luggage efficiently. Even the trainees were very friendly and we felt really warm to be treated with such great service. Their service was impeccable from staff of Front Office, Concierge, Bell Captain, Telephone operator and Housekeeping. The Duty Manager made sure we were well-taken care of as well. This is indeed a highly recommended hotel with fantastic location in the city. Guestroom has a modern and contemporary design with Molton Brown toiletries.

Stayed here on last night of 2012. Great location as insadong, samcheongdong, and ktx are all very close. The service was great and very willing to help. Room was small but cozy. Work out facility and pool were in a different building so a little inconvenient but still nice. The sauna wasnt free and i dont think worth the money- 27,000 won. Overall great experience and willing to come back.

If you're arriving at Incheon International Airport, all you have to do is hop on a KAL Limousine bus outside gate 4b or 11a. It costs KRW 15,000 (approx UK£8/US$14), takes about 70 minutes and drops you off at the hotel without making hundreds of stops on the way. There's absolutely no point getting a taxi unless there's a group of you!

We were actually staying in a club room as we're I Prefer members, so on arrival we were whisked up to the 18th floor lounge where we were checked in early. They are quite strict with their 2pm check in but will accommodate early arrivals from midday where possible.

The room itself was quite compact which was fine for a few days but had we been staying longer, we'd probably have made sure we got a larger one. Regardless, it was nicely done and very comfortable.

As we were staying in a club room, we had access to the club lounge on the 18th floor which was definitely worthwhile. There was a daily breakfast and essentially drinks and food of various descriptions throughout most of the day. A real bargain when you consider a cappuccino in the lobby lounge is nearly £10/US$16. Also, as it was Christmas, we were treated to a sit down champagne happy hour with food on the 2nd floor overlooking the skating ring outside City Hall on 24th and a full buffet breakfast in the restaurant on 25th.

All the staff we came across were, without exception, friendly and helpful. They were always smiling and couldn't do enough for us.

In terms of location, it's really central. It's near the palace and it's linked by an underground walkway directly to the Lotte department store which not only has great shopping but also a massive food court if you're in need of some food and you don't want to venture too far.

If I was being really picky, I guess the fact that the swimming pool is in the building opposite is a bit of a nuisance but honestly, we had a great stay and I'd highly recommend the hotel.

As a family of 4, two adults one teenager and one child of four, we stayed there from 10 to 17 Dec 2012 in deluxe twin rooms on the sixth floor. We're given two conjoined rooms with a common door which we left opened, making the place seemed more spacious. The moment we arrived on the KAL Limousine (a bus), a purpled uniform porter immediately whisked our luggage into the hotel without our having to instruct him. Although, officially the check-in time is 2pm, they checked us in at 12 pm, on a case by case basis. Don't worry, the staffs at the concierge and reception spoke good English.

The rooms were very clean, interior decor practical and tasteful, though a bit onthe feminine side (red, dark brown, white, black), the carpets were black but soft on the feet. The toilets, pristine white, had automatic as well as a control panel for flushing and cleaning. The automatic curtains opened you to a fantastic view of the city hall and its square, and a few large LED displays on neighboring buildings, and of course the mesmerizing traffic encircling the square, and a beautifully lit up Christmas tree at night. There was always some activity on the square, some set up or something which let us wonder if Psy might be performing again, but no it was just some charity drive. There was also a ice skating ring on the square.

Within half an hour after checking in into the rooms, we were given complimentary fruits as welcoming token by the hotel. However, it took the housekeeping a little longer to get the adjoining door opened. The housekeepers who physically attended to us were not fluent in English, but with gestures, things got done. One of the free amenities is a Nespresso coffee maker with three capsules per day. This is not a default, so you need to request from the housekeeping. Also, two complimentary bottles of mineral water per day, but you need not worry as there are plenty of convenient stores, cafes, restaurant around. There was free wifi, but the signal was weak on my ipad mini (6.0.0). The reception told us that service charge had been included in the hotel fees, so no tipping to any staff was required. TV programs were so so, BBC resolution is poor. But the beds were very comfy.

The hotel is ideally located. There is the Cityhall subway connected to the hotel basement lobby. Do download Subway Korea app for your convenience. You can walk to the Deuoksugung palace next door, free tickets can be obtained from the concierge. From the Plaza booklet, I understand that they do provide transport foc to other palaces at scheduled times but we did not try the service. It takes slightly more than five minutes to walk to Myeong dong in the direction of Westin Chosun Hotel, which also houses the historic Temple of Heaven now under renovation. Namdaemun is next to Myeong Dong. The old city hall building, now opened, is a spanking new library, mostly korean books. You can also take a brisk walk to Gwanghwamun to visit the King Sejong's Museum (foc) or all the way to Geongbok Palace or next to it, Samcheong dong (cafe street), or next to Sam Cheongsam Dong, Bukchon village, or across the road south to InsaDong. If you are game, from the hotel, you can walk to and climb up the Namsan hill. The underground mall connected to the basement lobby, a reprieve in the biting cold winter, connects you to Lotte World, upmarket Avenuel, and all the way to Myeong dong main street. You might want to check out the hotel gift shop as we got some quality items for up to 50% discount.

If you want to get a more aerial view, take a lift to the 22 floor. The swimming pool is in the next building, Hanhwa building. Though my family members were nonchalant, I personally found the art works and interior decor of the hotel lobbies classy.

Checking out is fast and an attentive porter took our luggage for safekeeping almost instantaneously. My impression of the purpled uniform guys is that they were everywhere and always ready to do your bidding.

As a family, we were very impressed with this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want nice views, choose rooms facing the City Hall.

very good service.. honest and hardworking staff.. it made our seoul experience wonderful..the location is good and its near good places to eat and very near the small and big palace..its near the myeoungdong shopping and insadong district.. accessible to taxi subway..the room rates are high and the food in the hotel is quite pricey and it is advisable to eat outside. there are a lot of restaurants to choose from.. also bring good insulated clothes if traveling during winter

Room Tip: choose the view with seoul city hall

Room was lovely. Stayed in the premier suite. Some bits of it wasn't all the luxurious feel eg the wardrobe area had this strange red cloth or something. But overall not bad. It is close to the road - so you can hear noise from the road. There is also a temple(?) square nearby where they seem to have a procession on the weekends? I never figured out what it was.

Location wise - it is linked to the underground walkway - hence pretty convenient but not as convenient/near as Lotte Seoul, I guess. If you are constantly heading to myeong dong, you are closer if you stay at Lotte Seoul. Also, in terms of eateries - there dont seem to be as many as Lotte Seoul's location. It is, however, very close to the subway.

Overall ok - but I will probably try other hotels in the same bracket as well.

We were in Hilton Millennium and 2 other resort hotels before we arrived at Plaza. It was definitely the best well designed and comfortable hotels from them all. Greeted by an extremely friendly and helpful staff- known as Trainee Hong and he remembered our family in our 3 days stay. Even the young lady staff, who was always standing around both exist doors, was so nice to share with us where to visit and provide information for the free transport to the tourist areas. Kids love this hotel, especially the technology!
