“Seoul Cool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2006

The only problem, outside of expense (which is reasonable considering what is provided) with the Sheraton Grande Walker Hill is that it is quite aways from downtown. Therefore, to go downtown, one needs to take a taxi or a shuttle bus. One of the subway stations isn't too far from the hotel; however, it is an enormous maze--easy to get lost. However then, one good reason for the Sheraton's location is that, while it is quite aways from downtown, it is in a REALLY COOL location away from downtown. Ironic isn't it? The hotel is not in a slummy area away from downtown, but in a nice hilly area across the river. That said, I was mostly taking organized tours downtown, so there was not much of a problem there, except that during rush hour, much of Seoul turns into a huge parking lot. SO, therefore, it is great that the SGWH has some really excellent rooms, one which was mine for a few days. Moreover, there are a few shops of interest in the hotel, but the big draw for me was the cuisine. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese restaurants (I took two out of three, and enjoyed my meals immensely). Needless to say, this was the first time I had really good Korean cuisine. Of course there is the casino, but I didn't spend my time there; likewise I have been through Vegas and to Macao, and didn't do the casino shuffle there either. I think of it as an acquired taste. Or maybe an acquired waste. Depends on how you look at the purpose of casinos. The people at the hotel were very helpful, even though my Korean is worse than my Japanese, which is worse than my Mandarin, which is....Internet service availability was excellent. Back to my room, I had a good view of some mountains out my window; my non-city tour days was spent hiking in similar mountains outside the city and in the east of the country. Seoul is an enormous sprawl, but it is a pretty decent enormous sprawl, and the SGWH is the right type of hotel for those who seem intimidated by the exterior enormous sprawl we call Seoul.

This hotel has features that are attractive or annoying depending on your preferences:

1. Location: On a wooded hillside with a lovely view of the river, served by a direct bus from the international airport, about 70 minutes away. Some people will find this an idyllic respite from the hustle and bustle of Seoul. But getting to some parts of Seoul during business hours can be a long and frustrating adventure.

2. Rooms: I had a very nice two-room suite in a wing of the building. The price was competitive for Seoul and much less that what I would expect to pay for a similar room in New York, London, or Hong Kong, for example. It was nicely appointly although not lavish. The room was in a quiet wing, removed from the traffic and noise of the lobby area; but it also required a 5 to 7 minute walk and two elevator rides to get to the lobby.

3. There is a casino, theatre, and shopping mall on site, which tend to attract crowds, but also adds some vitality to the property.

4. As one would expect in a Korean hotel, the service was exceptional in every respect.

5. The coffee bar / bakery in the lobby is excellent, and reasonably priced, quick alternative to the restaurants.

6. I hosted a dinner for my business partner and a group of my Korean clients in the Italian restaurant. The menu was reasonably priced for Seoul, and the food and service were very good.

As a business person, I would probably not stay at this hotel again, but only because there are more convenient hotels, of equal quality, for my business travel to Seoul. Otherwise it is definitely one or two levels above most Sheraton properties.

Approaching the hotel after a drive through the hills, you might be forgiven for thinking you're being taken to the mother ship, with the Sheraton's futuristic lobby frontage. Inside, embedded LCD displays on the floor of the waiting area for the elevators and the walls of the elevators themselves add to the sci-fi feel.

The service was good, the rooms beautiful and large. A laptop with free high-speed internet access is provided -- my favorite feature. Outside, the pools looked rather ordinary and the view across the river towards apartment blocks uninspiring. Being quite far from the city center, the hotel has a large casino, shopping area and stage area ala Vegas underneath it. (The show, also ala Vegas, was entertaining enough, the accompanying dinner unremarkable.)

The sticking point is that it takes a good long taxi ride just to get out of the hotel and into the city, and an equally long one back. Not very convenient if you plan on spending the night out.

It is located on one of Seoul's hills with a view of the river. If you plan to just stay in the hotel and happy to pay for on location restaurants, it would be a pleasant place to stay. It is not within walking distance of a subway, but the hotel provides a free shuttle bus service that takes you to one of 2 different subway lines. I've stayed at 5 of the 5 star hotels in Seoul and this hotel costs less to stay in. The professionalism of the service is not at the level of the Westin Chosun or Radisson Plaza.

We looked at the pictures on the web and the rooms looked great. Even though we were on a business trip, we always want to see the sights and maybe pick up a few souveniers for family and friends. We arrived to an area where the hotel is in the older section of Seoul and is set up on a hill far away from any other restaurant or shopping area. Only way to get to center of town is to take a VERY EXPENSIVE taxi ride. So, we thought, we'll make the best of it here. They have a pool, gym, stores here, and a few good restaurants on the premises. Well, as it turns out, the outdoor pool is closed in May. The indoor pool is down in the basement, below the lower shopping level, and is not even marked with signage. The water looked green and no one was in it, although I can't blame them. We were told that even thought we were guests of the hotel, we had to pay $14.00 to get into the pool. Can you imagine??? The gym is also in the basement and has the look of a compound rather than a gym. The beauty parlor for massages had a dirty floor and was very cluttered and unkept. So, we'll shop at the stores, I thought. Well, unless you have unlimited funds, forget it. And absolutely no traditional Korean souveniers were available at the stores. Our room was very tiny and the bathroom was very dark and small. No drawers to place your clothes!!! Sheraton needs to take their name off of this property, as it is definitely not up to Sheraton standards.

STUCK.
