The Westin Chosun Seoul
Ranked #21 of 504 Hotels in Seoul
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 22, 2009

We stayed five nights in the Westin Chosun in August while visiting Seoul. The location is excellent for tourism. Shopping and restaurants in the area are abundant, and subway stations are a short walk away. We found the lobby staff to be very helpful with directions and advice. A map of the area around the hotel is available in the lobby, and it became our primary map for exploring the area. The hotel restaurants were expensive and so we ate in restaurants in the area. We tried to get breakfast one day in the lower level, but were frustrated by communication problems and went to Starbucks.

Our room was very comfortable with a nice sofa. We really enjoyed the expresso maker. The cellphone provided by the hotel was really helpful in meeting up with friends in Seoul, and the charges were insignificant.

This hotel to me is over-rated. The hotel claims to be in the Top 100 in the world according to some business magazines but I did not see anything in this hotel for what it claims.

I arrived at 9:30 am which is very early as far as the Westin Chosun is concerned. They told me that the room was not ready. But if I paid half a day charge there was a room. Strange way for a Top 100 hotel esspecially when I am also an SPG Platinum member. I had to wait over an hour in the cafe and the hotel offered me no complimentary coffee or anything. Checked in finally and it was a good room. I had booked for a Westin guest Office room. The room comes with a Lap top.

SPG Platinum members are told to expect an upgrade...my expectation was in vain. When I asked if I would be upgraded, they said I could access to the Exec lounge. Platinum members get that anyway...it was not an upgrade. Platinum members are told that they would receive a welcome Gift...I had to ask for mine once in the room. The initial response was 'I am not sure' sir...but it did come eventually. And this hotel claims it is a TOP 100!! thats top 100 in the world.

The room is good, well eqipped with a good Laptop. Bathrooms are very average. Bath-tub and shower is combined. I did not see any premium amenties..may be because I was a Platinum member. It was the plain westin brand of amenities. Just the basic soaps etc. No toothbrushes, razors etc due to a new Local legislations..But I did find all these in the room 'FOR SALE' as part of the in room bar. Well stocked with a lot of food, drinks and other items like tothbrushes, socks etc.

The Executive Lounge is good but nothing so fantastic..it was a bit too crowded and a bit noisy as well..I would not call it a Lounge rather an extention of a bar.

Service however is very good throughout the hotel. Whether it be the ddor man to the lounge staff....alll very courteous and fast.

Overall its not a bad property and it manages somehow....but barely manages to achieve a pass on almost everything. .You may get the feeling of disappointment unless you are expecting nothing fantastic.

Arrived after a long flight and tried to check in. An early arrival had been confirmed but there was not any room available. Had to wait for 2 hours and was after that asked to pay a 30% early checkin fee. Room was fine with a good sized bed and a flat screen tv.
For internet access you pay 22000KRW for 24 hours. If you are on the executive floors you can enjoy the 20th floor lounge with free coctails and snacks between 6-8pm.
There is a Korean Air Limo Bus going from the airport to the hotel which takes 1,15 hour which came quite handy.

The area is close to one of the popular shopping areas where there are plenty of restaurants.

If you use the black luxury taxis they will not accept creditcards. I used the standard taxis instead which did, they come in frequently with other guests.

The hotel did not have an outdoor pool for the sunny day which I think is a minus.
generally the service was good but again had a touch of tired feeling.

My partner and I recently stayed at the Westin Chosun Hotel - A convenient but ageing hotel in the heart of Seoul.

ROOM
We reserved an Executive Deluxe Room which allowed us entry to the Executive Lounge. The check-in was fairly efficient, if a bit surly - The check-in staff never smiled and seemed to be bored and or tired. We were escorted to our room by the staff, and showed the facilities in the room. The room was of above-average size but the big windows allowed in a lot of light. The room came with such extra amenities as a 32-inch (81 cm) widescreen LCD TV with an interactive service, a self-serve Nespresso coffee machine, tea making facilities, and a mobile phone with a private number for the guest's use (incoming calls are free and text messages charges are very reasonable). The room had a king size Westin Heavenly Bed, a wardrobe, a big work table, speaker phones, an in-room safe as well as high-speed LAN Internet service (not complimentary) and WIFI (complimentary). The minibar was fully stocked with snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There were electronic controls by the bed to control the lights, and the temperature. The bed was quite comfortable and with the turn down service in the evening we received a complimentary fruit platter. While the furniture and the design of the room had a tasteful look, they were not well taken care of - we found several scratches on the tables! This was a recently renovated room but I suspect that in a year's time, the room might need another update. The view from our room was quite nice: We had a view of the Temple of Heaven (right next to the hotel) as well as the Seoul Plaza.

BATHROOM
The marble bathroom was alright, but not spectacular: There was a sink, a bathtub-shower combination (no separate shower stall), a toilet, but without the usual extra amenities such as toothbrushes and razors as it is apparently against Korean law (!) to supply these to guests. There were plenty of towels for use. Since we were staying at an Executive Room, we were given AVEDA amenities to use. The look of the bathroom was a slight disappointment, despite being fairly functional.

EXECUTIVE LOUNGE
During our stay, there were two medium sized Executive Lounges for the use of guests staying at the Executive Rooms. However, we were told that a newer, bigger Executive Lounge on the twentieth floor would replace the current two in the near future. During our stay, we used both Executive Lounges and found them to have the usual (smallish) breakfast spread, afternoon nibbles, and a cocktail hour in the evening with light snacks. The quality of the food was alright and the alcoholic selection was satisfactory. The Lounge also had a lot of reading material and two PCs set up for Internet use (15 minutes each). Overall, the Executive Lounge is worth the upgrade if you can afford it.

HOTEL FACILITIES
The hotel offered a variety of facilities for the guests, some of which require an extra tariff. There was a heated indoor pool, fitness facilities, a Korean hot spring-style bath area with sauna as well as a separate spa (The pool, the fitness facilities are complimentary for all guests, but non-Executive Room guests must pay extra to use the Korean hot spring area/sauna). We used the facilities and found them to be good. The staff at these facilities are especially friendly and guests are given complimentary gym clothes should they require it. The common areas of the hotel were nice, although they had a faded feel to them. The hotel gets a lot of foot traffic from visitors and tour groups so the common areas are hardly relaxing places.

RESTAURANTS/BARS
The hotel had five restaurants (serving French, Chinese, Italian and Japanese cuisines), and a lounge/bar (the Compass Rose) to choose from. We didn't dine at any of the hotel restaurants although we had heard good things about the quality of the food there. There are countless other food options right outside the hotel especially in the Myeondong district.

SERVICE
Overall, the service of the hotel was good as everyone was courteous, smiling and professional( with the exception of the surly check-in staff). Communicating in English was not a major problem. It's worth noting that the hotel is actually a franchise of Westin and better known in Korea by its local name - The Chosun Hotel. This is not a major problem, but do remember this fact when your credit card bill states the Chosun Hotel rather than the Westin Hotel Seoul.

SURROUNDINGS
The Westin Chosun Hotel is located in the downtown core of Seoul, and is within walking distance of the Myeongdong shopping district, the huge Lotte Department Store as well the Namdaemun Market. The hotel is also conveniently located near the City Hall Subway station. Use the subway to get around the city - It's cheap, and fairly efficient. There are also plenty of taxis which are also affordable to use. If you are using a taxi to get to the hotel, tell the driver that you are staying at the Chosun Hotel which is the more common name of the hotel in Korean.

CONCLUSION
The Westin Chosun Hotel is a good four and a half star hotel with good facilities and an excellent base to explore Seoul. Despite being revamped several times, the hotel is old and there is a faded feel about it. The staff could more than make-up for this, but our encounter with the check-in staff left us a bitter taste in our mouth. I would however stay here again because the positives do outweigh the negatives.

The Westin Chosun in Seoul offers a very satisfying experience. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful, and the rooms are a step above your average Westin in the US. The rooms feature a trendy design with relatively unobstructed views of the city below and the mountains in the background.

The beds are extremely comfortable, with high-quality linens, and the rooms feature a few consoles from which you can control all of the lighting in the room. American travelers who do not bring a power adapter will be pleased to find standard US plugs in multiple areas throughout the room.

Perhaps the only complaint I have is that the per-day price of internet connectivity is fairly steep ($17 USD), and for that $17, you get a pretty slow internet connection.

All in all, you can't go wrong with the Westin Chosun Seoul!
