I stayed in a suite at JW Marriott in Seoul. It was a gorgeous room with all the amenities you could want. The hotel itself was impressive from the outside and more so from the inside. With a slew of restaurants and bar options, and one of Korea's fanciest shopping centers attached to the hotel, it's a world of its own.

The price is high, as you'd expect from a flagship Marriott hotel, and they provide the luxuries that make you feel it was worthwhile. That said, the cost of staying here continues to rise because cab rides will cost you considerably more time and money to get to the places you'd most likely visit, such as Myung-dong, Itaewon, Namdaemun, or any place in Jongro, etc. It's not terribly far, but it is further than other hotels in "center Seoul" like The Palace or Westin Chosun Hotel. (I'm told the subway is right below the hotel, but cannot comment on that as I didn't take the subway from this hotel at all.) That said, this hotel is NICER than either of the aforementioned options.

If you have the option, do use the upgrade to the Executive floors. As a platinum member, our upgrade was automatic -- but this upgrade is sometimes not of much use. In this hotel's case, the drinks and food options presented in the lounge were extremely worthwhile.

There are a lot of hotel options in Seoul, ranging from truly high-end, American-branded chain hotels all the way to an authentic Korean-homestays. The main good thing about going to chain hotels is that a JW Marriott, a Starwood Hotel or a Hilton guarantees that your expectations will at least be minimally met. This particular JW Marriott exceeds all of that in terms of luxury, service and amenities.

My recent stay was my first at a JW Marriott. Overall I had a quite positive experience.

I was most impressed by the quality of service for such a large hotel. For example, when in line to check in someone immediately greets you and relieves you of your bags. While in line for the concierge, another employee will come up and ask (and often fulfill) your request (e.g., retrieval of left luggage, city, amp, etc).

The rooms are not spectacular, but large and comforting in understated tan and celadon colors. Bathroom was spacious with separate tub and shower. Very clean throughout though a bit dated in decor but well maintained.

Public areas reminded me a bit of an upscale suburban bank lobby in the United States. Clean, pleasant and a bit antiseptic. Lots of marble and light wood finishes.

I ate at three restaurants at the hotel (International (all day), lobby lounge and Italian) and found the Italian to be the most lively (along with the International) and my favorite for quality of food and value. There is a second floor lobby bar that had (on most nights) a very young but accomplished jazz piano and bass duet. They made the expensive wine (15,000+ Wan per glass) a little easier to enjoy.

My only real complaint is the location. While the hotel is connected to subway and bus stations, there is really nowhere (that I was aware of) to walk to outside the hotel (or attached mall) for dining, shopping or sightseeing. There is a "French Village" area not too far (maybe 20 minutes on foot) but this was the extent. I suspect that this hotel may not be alone with this problem as Seoul is geographically so huge and spread out that many activities would involve a subway or taxi ride no matter where one would stay. For those interested, there is an immediately adjacent jogging/"nature" trail.

Room Tip: I'm guessing the north facing rooms would have a better view as they face the mountain and city. (Mine faced south with view of Gangnam builidngs and hills in the distance)

Dear CAStein,

We appreciate your wonderful review shared here with great photos!

We are glad to learn that you found our lobby pleasant, which has recently undergone a renovation.

On the location, we are under a roof of the biggest complex building in Seoul with extensive dining and shopping options. A premium department store, movie theater, bookstore, food court and underground shopping arcade are all accessible without going outside. Also with three directly linked subway lines, it is convenient to reach anywhere in Seoul.
We wish you would have another chance to visit us again in the near future to explore more of our surroundings. Our experienced concierge team will be 24 hours available for any assistance.

Thank you and regards,

James Lee

It's the 2nd time for us to stay with the hotel. If you are not a super fans of very busy city life in a leisure trip, like us, JW should be a good choice! Located in Gangnam, connected to Shinsagae (department store with good food hall) and Gangnam Terminal Station (subway, bus and air bus), we had a quieter environment and also some good shops around us. Even a taxi to major shopping areas was affordable. Of course the management of this 'traditional' hotel made this experience a classy hotel one that no other small chain can compare. But if you really like a hotel in the heart of the shopping area, JW should not be your cup of tea.

The JW Marriott Seoul is one of the best Marriott's I have stayed in. The hotel is gorgeous. The staff veryfriendly and accommodating. English is prevalent. The Executive Lounge was wonderful. Food for breakfast end evening was exceptional. Wine selections very good. Nice location connected to high end mall.
