Best Western New Seoul Hotel

Got 2 connecting large rooms for our family. They were very large - almost like suites with a separate sitting area and coffee table. The rooms were very clean and the decor was minimalist modern. Plenty of space for the kids to run around in. The hotel is used to foreign tourists, and it seems many come from Japan and stay here. We spoke no Korean or Japanese, but had absolutely no communication problems, as the desk staff spoke English. They were very courteous and arranged our dinner reservations at outside restaurants, and called other locations on our request to confirm pricing and opening times.
The restaurant and bar area look like they have been recently re-decorated, and the designers have done a great job. The breakfast at the hotel was superb - made to o0rder eggs, and great coffee. This is like no Best Western I have ever stayed at. The location could not be more perfect - we walked to the ice skating rink around the corner, and to the malls and many restaurants.

If you are looking for a well-priced centrally located hotel with good service, great rooms and food at a super price, look no further.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the higher floors and make sure you ask for recently renovated floors.

It's quite apparent the staff has not much interest to entertain guests who're not Korean. Asked for a Map, reply was 'no more' and nothing further offered. Asked for a cab, curt reply was '(in front of) Starbucks'. I wouldn't dare venture asking for recommended sights and restaurants. Feeling was that I was imposing on them with these questions.

Facilities are a joke for this price point. To be fair, rooms are clean and newly renovated. But rest of the establishment looks like a cheap motel. When I was at Koreana hotel briefly, the concierge was 10x better, offering helpful advice in good English.

Stayed in this hotel with family for 5 nights on our visit to Seoul. It was my first time in Seoul and I chose this hotel because I had approximately 950 dollars in gift cards that I needed to use up from Best Western. I booked online via the best western website and was really looking forward to the stay. I stayed in a triple room for approximately 167 dollars a night.

Location: I arrived from Gimpo International Airport and took a taxi (which was about half an hour) to the hotel. If you are arriving from the Incheon international airport (more likely if you are not traveling domestically within Korea) then I would suggest utilizing the KAL airport limousine bus for 15,000 won a person (15 dollars). Get off at the Koreana hotel or the Lotte World Seoul Hotel and walk to the Best Western. Hidden in an alleyway, it is initially very difficult to find and most cab drivers do not know where it is. Therefore it is best to look for the Koreana hotel, and it is actually in the alleyway right across the street from that hotel. When traveling about, make sure to take the hotel card with you to show taxi drivers.

The actual location of the hotel relative to the sites in Seoul is very convenient. It is really located in a prime location and walking distance to MANY sites. This is the prime selling point of this hotel and the main reason you would book it. It is about a 1 min walk to City Hall, 2 min walk to Deoksugung (with changing of the guards ceremony), 2 min walk to Cheonggyecheon stream, 5 minute walk to Myeong-Dong shopping street, and 10 min walk to Gwanghwamun (multiple sites and where the Seoul City tour bus starts). Although I never utilized the subway, it is a 1 min walk from the hotel and can take you to many places in Seoul.

Hotel: When I entered the hotel, it was a pretty standard lobby and nobody helped with luggage (carrying up stairs). The front desk smiled but the english skills are definitely below average compared to other hotels in Asia. I paid with gift cards and desposited them at check in with the front desk. There are two lifts and I did not experience the long waiting periods that others have although I lived on the 4th floor. There is a restaurant downstairs serving Western style food and a restaurant on the second floor which is good for congee breakfast (although pricey). The cleaning staff do a great job and overall, it is a functional hotel but please do not expect the same facilities as a Best Western back in America or Canada.

Room: Stayed in a triple room on the 4th floor that had a nice view of the alley outside. No fire hazard issues because it was so close to the ground so I am unable to comment. The room itself was large for Asian standards and also clean. The beds were comfortable although a bit rigid. There is free wired internet and TV with a few english channels. Housekeeping hands out free adapters for your electronics. The washroom is clean, but unfrotunately had very poor ventilation which causes uncomfortable odours to permeate the room after washroom usage. Noise levels were minimal although if someone were to be very loud in the next room, you could be able to hear them.

Upon checkout, the front desk had a hard time finding my gift cards which took a while to sort out.

Value: HERE IS A CAUTION - the rate you are quoted when you book on the best western website is really not the rate you will end up with. I ended up paying about 15% more due to additional taxes imposed by the hotel. Really a nickle and dime process which I did not appreciate. There is no transparency with this hotel in terms of cost and this was also a low point.

Overall: Location, Location, Location for the price. This is the reason one would stay here. The double rooms are quite affordable and the location is prime. Other then that, the nickle and diming, average rooms with poor bathroom ventilation and below average staff make this not an ideal choice. I am returning to Seoul in one year and will not be staying at this hotel. I would probably not recommend this hotel to friends unless they were getting it for free (which was my case with the gift cards). Koreana hotel is close and a good alternative. Ibis hotel is also in the area and a popular alternative. Happy Travels (catch the KAL bus from the Lotte Seoul Hotel back to the airport).

The BW New Seoul Hotel has a great location. I chose this hotel because I had some work at the US Embassy in Seoul and this hotel is quite close to it. The hotel is directly across the street from the Koreana hotel (which is where the airport shuttle bus 6701 stops) so getting there is really convenient. It is right next to the Seoul Finance Center building and a short walk from City Hall and there are restuarants, banks (for money exchange) and subway stations (Gwanghamun and City Hall) within 5 mins walking distance. The US Embassy is also within 5-7 minute walk. I had chosen the cheapest room available, which was still over a hundred bucks. The booking site did specify that I was choosing an interior room with no windows so I wasn't expecting much. The room was fairly small and dark but it was comfortable enough with a clean bathroom and free (wired) ethernet. The AC was turned off when I checked in and I had to call the front desk to get it started but then it worked fine within 5 minutes. The staff was quite friendly and they stored my baggage for a few hours after I had checked out. So if you are looking for a basic place to stay overnight and airport access and proximity to City Hall / Finance Center / Embassy is important to you, I'd recommend this hotel. If you are looking for a pleasure trip with family, I would recommend staying further away from downtown to find cheaper and better hotels. You can use the subway which is English-friendly and cheap to get where you want.

The Best Western New Seoul Hotel is conveniently located in downtown Seoul just behind the City Hall. Walking distance to the metro lines 1 and 2 as well as the underground shopping complex. Branch of Starbucks is just outside. It is close to many authentic Korean restaurants within the business district – it’s great to watch “salarymen” getting merry and rather pie-eyed on soju in the evenings after work.

The place itself doesn’t offer much. Architecture harks back to 1960s whilst rooms are relatively basic. Air conditioning takes a while to change to the desired setting. There is no bar and the “Italian” restaurant was noticeable only for lack of any interest from the patrons. To call one of the two lifts you had to press both buttons and then wait ages as they were making their way through similar arrangements on all floors. Obviously, fire escape hazard as mentioned by other reviewers is just yet another negative point.

Typically, it is the reception staff that manages to lift the poor perception of the hotel. However, at New Seoul the reception was rather inefficient, with attitude that could easily redefine the term “thinking inside the box”…

Breakfast was rather unimaginative, with the choice of local porridge or American/Continental Breakfast served by a waiter. Bizarrely, if you ordered Korean porridge and tea/coffee you were charged for the beverage (and payment rigidly enforced) – this charge did not apply if you ordered American/Continental Breakfast. Go figure.

I had a peak into the President Hotel further down the road. The place appeared much more organised and with more facilities than at New Seoul Hotel. Presumably, a better stay too. If you want to really splash out, Lotte hotel, nearby looked fabulous.

As my boyfriend and I was about to stay there at the end of January, I reported those problems to NEMA(the National Emergency Management Agency). They investigated this without letting the hotel to know. the officer of NEMA called me twice, before visiting this hotel and after visiting. the report of them arrived at my home today.

1. About locked door
It was opened at the moment of investigating, and it can be opened from inside at any time and there's a person standing close to the door.
2. About the blocked section
There were movable trollies on the 2nd floor so they ordered the hotel to clean up them and warned them.
3. About the bolt matter
It is to let the visitors to escape easily - i don't think this answer is really solved the problem but anyway, having it is better than not having it.

For the last, the investigators warned 4 of responsible people to be careful of keeping the emegency regulation and the safety of the visitors and also told them about the concerning review of this website.
(Date of investigation : 19-Jan-2011, Jungbu fire station)

this hotel's location is very good but if you are my friend, I wouldn't recommend you to stay here as this is an old hotel where has nothing really special. there're new and nicer hotels like Mariott in Yeongdungpo where is just several subway stations away and the price is almost the same.

Fire escape hazard. Each exterior room has a metal eye bolt and a rope which must be tied to the bolt for escaping via window, and the window openings are small enough to perhaps allow a small gymnast egress. Can you see yourself going down a rope from the top floors? There are two stairs for fire exit, and the one in the center of the building is locked at the bottom, so one can not get out. The second, is partially blocked by boxes and equipment. Air conditioning very poor in two rooms we tried, both exterior. Hot and humid. These deficiencies out weigh the excellent location and good service of the front desk staff.
