“Flawless but faceless”
Reviewed October 7, 2006

I stayed in the hotel in the end of September 2006 while traveling on business.

The hotel is located in the new business district of Seoul, it is a part of a huge complex comprising, among others, COEX convention center, World Trade Centre, enormous COEX shopping mall, Hyundai department store and another (Grand) Intercontinental hotel. This means that the hotel is quite far away from the historic centre of Seoul (40 minutes by metro). The metro stop itself is 10 minutes walking from the hotel (on the other side of the block, near Grand Intercontinental)

The hotel provides a high quality, modern accommodation, but completely lacks atmosphere, the lobby feels like a convention centre or an airport.

My twin room was on the 15th floor, quite spacious with a big bathroom and a convenient bed. Everything was in good order, but the bathroom fittings (in the room and in the hotel in general) seemed old fashioned by North European standards (they were not old!).

For me the highlight of the stay was a fitness centre which guests can use free of charge. This is not a crowded gym found in many hotels, but a full-fledged fitness centre with a spacious gym, 25 meters swimming pool, sauna, golf green, cafe, sitting room with a computer for free Internet access, etc. The gym is perfectly equipped, mostly with Cybex-branded machines. At the fitness centre reception they even provide (for free) clothes for the gym - shorts, trainers and a T-shirt.

Breakfast is very good, with plenty of fruits at hot dished, the only deficiency being lack of healthy meat or fish dishes - all such dishes on offer were either fried or grilled with oil.

Hotel personnel was fantastic and could not be more helpful.

The hotel is pricey (corporate rate for my stay was 210000 won, breakfast included) and I would not stay there for my own money. If your company pays for your stay, Grand Intercontinental nearby is probably more pleasant (also much closer to the metro station) but also even more pricey.

  • Liked — Fitness Centre
  • Disliked — Lack of atmosphere, everything was too standard
  • Tips/Secrets — Grand Intercontinental has more atmosphere and is closer to the metro station

We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of August (8/25-8/30). The room was bigger than we had expected, and the bathroom was also large with separate shower/bath. They gave us a room on 15th floor with a nice view of the temple, some nearby buildings and the river at a distance. Unlike one of the previous posters' experience, we did not hear the temple bell go off early in the morning.

One thing we'd like to note is its location - this hotel is not close to many of the attractions of "old" downtown Seoul, which are all located across the river on the north side. So you will either have to take taxis or subway (e.g., 18 subway stops to the City Hall station on Line 2) if you want to explore that part of the city. We were also somewhat disappointed with the adjacent COEX mall - it was very crowded (especially on weekends) and felt chaotic. The mall had an extensive (and very reasonablly-priced) selection of restaurants/food courts, but many of them felt to us like Korean "fast food" chains.

Overall, it's a very nice, contemporary hotel, but we didn't think the location was very convenient for most tourists.

Stayed for 7 nights on first business trip to Korea. Rooms very clean and modern. Spotless, cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in, no mold or grunge in bathroom, it was impeccable. Great location on top of Coex mall, which is a huge underground mall in the center of the city. During down time could spend hours walking the mall, with hundreds of restaurants and eateries, including U.S McDonalds, Pizzaria Uno, TGI Fridays. Walk to other end of mall to pick up subway system- which was again clean and very safe- excellent way of getting around all over the city. The gym was one of the best features, it is not your typical hotel closet gym, but a full fledged health club with all amenities and service personnel. Good free weight room, universal equipment, treadmills, full swimming pool. Breakfast at hotel great international buffet- but costs $33. Good for first morning, after that walk down into mall early [even if escalator turned off- it is OK] and find coffee, bakery shops [or McDonalds]. Hotel had the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever seen, very polite people as are all Koreans. Takes time getting use to someone bowing their head to say "hello" or good-bye. I will not stay anywhere else on next visit.

The COEX is well located, good rooms and nice gym. The hotel is expensive. While we were able to get a great room rate, the extras, food in the cafe, and $7 USD coffee became a bit of a joke with us. They have a very nice sauna but the $30USD pricetag kept us out. I would recommend the hotel for the business traveller but it was lacking charm and amenities for the our short break vacation

Great hotel for business travelers -- spacious, nice, clean rooms; great gym and pool; great breakfast buffet included as part of business room price; helpful service; Coex mall attached to hotel which includes great Korean and non-Korean options, cafes, and convenient store.

Only problem is the food at a few of the restaurants is not that great and avoid getting a room facing the temple across the street - you may hear the gongs that go off at 4:30 in the morning.

This was the hotel of my choice on my recent trip to Seoul in 5 years based on location and advance rates of $153/night. It turned out to be a wise one. There is another Intercontinental Hotel adjacent to the City Airport terminal which is more crowded, more flamboyant, and more businesslike atmosphere. If you want to avoid all the crowds, this hotel is for you. It's newer, smaller, well appointed, and well serviced. I purchased business room upgrade for $40 a night which includes internet access, spa use, and daily buffet breakfast on higher floor for better view. Internet access alone costs $25 and $30 for breakfast after tax. Clearly, $40 upgrade is worth it if you use internet and eat breakfast here. The breakfast was superb for a buffet. Yes it is much better than Bellagio or Caesars Palace in quality and variety of menu such as abalone porridge, fresh juice (carrot, kiwi, orange, tomato)squeezed to order, bakery, kimchi fried rice, smoked salmon, and so on. The staff is always eager to help. This is the closest hotel to the COEX convention center as the entrance is right next to each other. The overall experience was very nice and would definitely be the hotel of my choice again when I go back Seoul.
