Great location, good value hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 4, 2011
My husband and I stayed a the Hill House Hotel for three nights over Thanksgiving and enjoyed our stay. The hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk uphill from the Namdaemun and Myeongdong street markets, the best markets in Seoul in our opinion. The bathroom was very spacious, and enclosed in glass, an elegant look. No shower curtain which got the floor wet everytime we showered, not sure if that's a Korean thing. The room was a little on the small side due to the large size of the bathroom. There wasn't a small table for my husband and I to sit and enjoy tea together. The floor was heated and the temperature seemed well controlled. Good thing since we weren't able to adjust the temperature. The room did have a slight smoke odor although it was a non-smoking room.

As other reviewers have stated, the hotel was hard to find. Our cab drove up and down the streets asking pedestrians and ended up charging us an arm and a leg for his random searching. If you cab it to the hotel, make the driver call the hotel before leaving to get directions. None of the cabs we took knew how to get there. Fortunately after the first time, we were able to direct the rest of the cabs where to go.

The front desk people spoke English and were really helpful in guiding us on where to go. We appreciated their guidance. The breakfast was a simple fried eggs, toast with butter and jam, and shredded cabbage. Nothing to write home about, but it was nice to have the convenience of breakfast before leaving the hotel.

I stayed in Hill House for 3 nights in November 2011. It was chilly outside but the heating in the hotel worked really properly. Nice reception staff, very good cable internet in the room. There are also computer with internet in the lobby.
The room is not big, but has a nice decor. The bathroom is huge, almost the size of the room, and the hotel provides you with many complimentary toiletry items you might need and bottles with drinking water. I was in the room 508 which had no real view but got enough light. Bed is comfortable, shower works properly, although there is no shower curtain. The room has a microwave, electric tea kettle, cups, and each day you get tow complimentary tea sachets.
Breakfast is minimal, just toast and eggs, but there are plenty of places to eat out right next to the hotel. Location cannot be better, 3 minutes walk to Hoeheyon metro station (down the hill), 5 minutes to Namdaemun market, 10 minutes to Myeongdong shopping area. all other places are easily reachable by metro or the hotel staff can call you a taxi (for extra 1000 won charge).
Warning: despite the good maps it is really difficult to find the exact way to hotel up the hill when you arrive to the closest metro station for the first time. It is better to take a taxi, so you don't wander up and down the hill with your luggage. However, once you are there, you will never get lost again.
There are no wardrobe to hang your clothes neither shelves to put yout things, just a couple of hangers.
Altogether my stay was pleasant and I will not hesitate to stay there again if I come back to Seoul. Absolutely worth the price you pay.

Good value for downtown Seoul. Excellent location in a funky neighborhood and very friendly and helpful staff. They gave us maps of the city and directions on how to use the subway.

The Room; Good sized room and bathroom. Very clean. No closet. Only two hooks and two hangers. Light switches for room are located across the room from the bed. No reading lights over bed. Few plugs in the room. Had to plug water heater into a socket and place pot on floor. Nice flat screen TV. Excellent internet. Both wireless and LAN plug in. A sterilizer for cups and glasses. No shower curtain but it was not a problem in bathroom. Nice bathtub for a soak and very clean.

No safe in room but lock boxes in lobby next to front desk.

Breakfast was a bit boring with eggs any style, toast, cabbage salad, juice and coffee or tea...every day. The hi-lite of breakfast was the very friendly little lady who cooks your eggs. She was always upbeat and good to see early in the morning.

Thought this hotel was well located and not as far from the main areas as some reviews have suggested. Located in an interesting local working and living area, it was fine for a few nights and the breakfast although simple was very welcome and avoided searching outside. Rooms spacious, overall will stay again.

I was on a business trip to Seoul, but also had some time for sightseeing. I stayed 3 nights at this hotel. This is clearly a reformed love hotel. The decor is quite pink and there is a bit too much neon in the hallways. The fact that it used to be a love hotel at one time does not mean it is bad, but there are some things to watch out for.
1) No workspace. There is really no space in the room to work or sit at a desk. The wired internet is not anywhere near where it would be convenient to work. So, try not to plan on doing anything computer related in the room.
2) the bed is like stone. The bed is incredibly hard, which is not all that bad for me, but some people might hate it. It is actually harder than my bed in Japan (which is a futon on the floor).
3) Shower has no curtain. A big indicator of the love hotel status is the bathroom, which is quite strange. There is no curtain or separator for the shower, so your water will go everywhere. There was also a little pink light above the bath for that extra romance.
4) The hill. It is at the top of a hill, but it is not a bad climb.
5) The cleaning seemed to get worse each day. I stayed only 3 nights and each day they seemed to do one less job. By the third day staff did not replace the amenities, did not provide new towels, and did not collect the garbage.

There are some good things too:
1) The staff. Very friendly and helpful. They provide a safety box on the first floor if you need it and they also gave me a power adapter since mine didn't work (they ask for a small deposit). The staff arranged for my DMZ tour and I was picked up from the hotel for the tour.
2) Location of the place (except for the hill) is great. It is well placed within 20 minutes of two shopping areas, 1 traditional market, and 1 modern shopping district. It is not far to city hall area and other attractions walking or by subway.
3) The price was good. There might be better places for the same or similar price, however. I had a tough time booking other places because it was peak travel season and a weekend.

Tip: There are quite a few nice cafe's nearby on the way down the hill or just left at Woori bank around the corner. They serve nice variety of organic herbal and other teas/coffees.

My friend and I returned from Seoul last night after staying at the Hill House for two nights.

Our rooms were spacious and clean, with comfortable beds and very large, wall-mounted televisions with three or four channels of English programming. The bathrooms were also fine, with more products available than most other hotels I'd stayed at (including cologne and hair gel, for example).

The location was GREAT, being a 4-minute walk to the well-located Hoehyeon station, an 8-minute walk to Dongdaemun market, and a 10-minute subway (or 15-minute taxi) ride to Itaewan.

The hotel service was friendly and efficient, and the breakfast - although minimal with toast, fried eggs, coffee and juice - was most welcome after a night of drinking. Being a big guy, I doubled up on the food, as did some of the other guests. Free bottled of water in the mini-fridge below the TV also came in handy, although there are three convenience stores within a 2-3 minute walk from the hotel.

There were a few minor flaws, with perhaps the biggest being the heavily soiled carpeting on the stairs and 2nd floor. My room also lacked clothing drawers and the hotel didn't have an iron. There were also no light switches in the rooms. Once you put your room key in the slot, it activates all the lights and electricity. Take it out and everything goes off. So, for people who like to read by a lamplight alone or watch TV in the dark, those aren't options. To me, anyway, these drawbacks proved to be small inconveniences in an otherwise great experience!

Room tip: My friend and I stayed in rooms 201 and 202, which were both very clean and quiet at night. My room (202) had the more interesting decor, with a funky yellow retro sink in the bathroom and interesting finishings above the headboard.
