“Bakery and coffee shop in Insadong”
Review of Crown Bakery Anguk Store - CLOSED

If you walk the Insadong-gil, with its many shops, vendors, cosmetics, restaurants and entertainment, the Crown Bakery will be a nice rest, since it is at the very end of Insadong-gil, if you start your walk near Tapgol Park. Coffee products at all the coffee shop chains are very expensive. Not sure why, but at Crown they are reasonable. There is a wide selection of breads and pastries, both savory and sweet. A good selection of juices, coffee, iced drinks and teas. Some unusual looking pastries, but the ones we selected were delicious and again reasonably priced. All identified in Korean and English, so no surprises when selecting. The inside of the Insadong shop has limited seating, so grab a seat and then go order your goodies. There are some public benches and walls to sit on outside if you do not find that an inconvenience. It is not a place that you will travel to to sample the goods, but if in the Insadong neighborhood, a good place to take a rest and have a drink and something to eat.

Crown Bakery is not a traditional tea house but it is the first cafe along Insadong Gil that one sees next to the KNTO info booth, near the paintbrush sculpture that epitomizes Insadong as an arts and culture zone.

This outlet does not offer the full range of Crown Bakery's products only a small selection of bread, buns and sandwiches.Only two staff at the counter - a cashier who bags purchases and a barista so service was slow when we dropped by for breakfast shortly after 9am on a weekday.

The tiny cramped area seats only 16 and is usually full after 11am when tourists arrive by the bus loads. Most will just pick what they want from the shelves, queue to pay then dash out.

Pretty much all the Korean chain bakeries are the same, and this one is no exception. My impression of how Koreans see bread and pastries is that they should be eaten as a treat, and are thus always sweetened. Most breads here are a take on that brand name white bread that my generation as so familiar with growing up. High quality, European style bread is almost not to be had in Korea, unless you really know where to go.
