In this area of Seoul there are many things to see - statues, museums, palaces, etc. This stream should be on your list - especially at night. Water is so important in Korean culture that they take opportunities to add more of it when they can and this is a fine example of that.

The colours, lights and sound are all stunning, relaxing, soothing. There is normally some music being played and the short walk it is in total is worth doing.

Along the stream, there is a walk way for people to travel across Insadong to Dongdaemun etc, and is a pretty famous place for tourist to take photos at the middle of the stream where there are rocks for you to cross over to the other side of the bank.

Cheonggyecheon (literally 'The Stream'), is a rivulet running west to east through the central area of old Seoul. The waterway has been converted into a charming urban park which stretches for around 3 and a half kilometres. It is crossed by many bridges which have destination signs and, for a walker, it is a great way to cross the city to reach destinations such as the Dongdaemun Flea Market

I was at this river, albeit artificial, with my wife during the night time. Experiencing and reading about it are two very different experience. To get a feel of this place, it is best to read about it's transformation which was previously covered by a highway. It was late autumn and it was about 7:00pm when we reached this place. I am not sure at which point or place we descended from the road to the river level which is about 5 meters below the road, but it was over an hours walked "up river" till we reached the "headwaters." The headwaters is pumped water. When I reached the headwaters, I wondered what would happen to the river if the pump/s breakdown which any mechanical thing would eventually do.

Anyway, the first thing I felt was the quiet and stillness of the place. The noisy, dusty, hustle and bustle of a huge city is "left" above one reaches the river side. The designers and builders have done a great job to create an environment to sooth the weary and tired souls of this huge city. People are in no hurry. They are either strolling along or just sitting by the steps along the river looking into each others eyes or watching the flow of the river water. The flowing water seems to act as a therapeutic agent that comfort their tired souls. It seems the cool autumn night could cast a spell on couples either walking hand-in-hand or just enjoying each others presence by the steps of the river. There was this young lady basking with her guitar. She evidently has a lot of confidence in her ability as she had a big bucket placed in front of her hoping that passerby would generously put some WON into it.

While we were there, the river administrators might have had some exhibition going on as some of the displayed were placed in the middle of the river. I could not figure out why those exhibits were placed there as I felt it was so out of place. Personally, those exhibits definitely spoiled the "atmosphere." If there is something negative about this attraction, it would be this wrongful use of space.

If you have the time, it is a worthwhile place to have a stroll, especially if you are with someone special.
