City Star Hotel
Ranked #44 of 161 Hotels in Yangon (Rangoon)
Reviewed November 17, 2012

Yangon's hotels are all overbooked and bursting at the seams in the current frenzy of interest since Burma's reforms began, so I ended up paying $60 a night to stay at the City Star. The location is great - the hotel is beside City Hall, and is close to the Strand and the Independence Memorial. The Sule pagoda is a stone's throw away.

The room was spacious with wooden floors, hot water and air con. The Wifi worked - but with the reliability issues typical of the internet in Yangon, even in a five star, but I don't blame the management for that. The air con was noisy, as other reviewers have pointed out. But it worked. The hot water maker for tea and coffee also worked and two bottles of water and two sachets of ready mix coffee were included for free in the room. There was a power cut during my stay, but the back up generator kicked in immediately.

Other elements could be improved and should be improved for the sake of guests. The minibar fridge was on, with power, but not at all cool. The bath towels were disgusting and had stains on, as edm07 has pointed out, but the hand towels appeared fresh and white. "Get a decent laundry contract" would be my advice to the management. Breakfast was not very appealing with a limited selection, watery coffee, and margarine for the white toast. This could be improved significantly. Burma produces decent coffee and tea and the hotel wouldn't go bust serving some to its long suffering guests. The lifts might also need some work as for most of my stay only one was functional.

If you like jogging you can run from the hotel to the Khandawgyi lake (2.5km) and then along the boardwalk beside the lake (2km each way). Watch for the holes in the pavement or you'll drop into the conduits beneath!

The front desk staff were very friendly.

Room Tip: Room 406 has a pleasant small balcony.

Booked this hotel because of the room rate, location and free wifi. But it was very disappointing that even though they claimed to have wifi, there is totally no wifi access from our room. We called up the customer service and they told us that we might have access from late evening. We waited till 7p.m and still no access. We thought probably it's our room that could not get the connectivity and went to the lobby to try but still no connection. We are very disappointed with this.

Another thing to take note is the hotel only accept cash, no credit card, so do bring your US dollar for the payment. I did not bring enough USD and have to use EURO, the conversion rate is very bad.

The plus point is the breakfast. It is a simple breakfast with little variety but it's nice and filling enough for me. The waiter is very friendly.

I might still choose this hotel for it's location and if the price did not increase, but probably have to bring some stuffs to occupy myself since I won't have internet access in room.

I had the "executive suite" what ever that means, which was two rooms with a great view on the back of the city hall and the Sule pagoda. Very easy access to shops and the downtown businesses.

I will probably be back there next time I visit the city.

Room Tip: ask for top floors, you will not regret the view.

Very convenient location in the compact downtown of Yangon. Nice places around to eat and shop. Nice rooms, helpful staff.

Inconvenient lighting in bathrooms, hard to shave. Bathroom condition in general not too good but tentatively tolerable.

Breakfasts - definitely bad, and their restaurant in general is not even close to satisfactory (even by the relatively low standards of Myanmar). Immediately outside the hotel you can get a more sensible selection of food - thus their restaurant should be avoided (unless the time is so late that there are no open alternatives).
