“Faded colonial beauty”

Reviewed September 25, 2016

The exterior shows a typical great colonial building which has been in decay for decades. Still signs of its greatness and still quite functional but probably struggles to draw viewers.

If you are in the down town Yangon and have some time it is interesting to see the railway station but do not expect too much. Just an old train station from British era. Need a little facelift. You can take circular train from here and go to Inle, Bagan, Mandalay and lots of place from this train station. This is the main train station in Yangon near Bogyoke Aung San Stadium close to downtown Yangon. You can also express express bus ticket infront of this train station. central place in yangon.

I went here to do the circular train. which is a nice 3-5 hour rid around Yangon. the train station itself is just like most other train stations with less regulations.

You have to go here if you want to catch a train somewhere else or want to take the circular route around Yangon (not a bad idea), but not sure I'd go here just to take a look around.

If you are in the down town area and have spare time it is interesting to see the railway station but do not expect too much. The original built by the British was destroyed in 1943 to stop the invading Japanese imperial army using it. Rebuilt in 1953 to what you can see today it is very Burmese in style and also quite decrepit. On the practical side it really is a gate way to Myanmar. As I say if you have time go and see it but set your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.
