Just across the road from Sule Shangrila hotel when we look down the railway overbridge we can see the raliway yard and platforms of Yangon Central Station. It was built in 1877 by the British, destroyed by them to stop Japanese troops from advancing further in 1943 during the World War and then rebuilt in 1947-54 by an architect called Hla Thwin. Rarely will one come across a railway station with such a rich history!
This is a terminus station, with an adjoining port and so is of strategic importance to the economy of the country. Its typical Burmese architecture makes it a heritage structure.
