Owner description: This museum exhibits the treasures of the last king of Myanmar.

This museum holds many artefacts dating back 40 million years to the present day. I was expecting more of an overview of the history of Myanmar, but checking out the many displays was interesting. A couple of the sections were closed on our visit, but for only 5000 kyet it was a great way to spend a couple of hours.

The place was cold, maybe because there were only a few people. The layout appears to be more for the curators of the museum rather than for visitors. Some of the displays, however were interesting, such as the various thrones, however more info regarding the various kings and dynasties will be helpful for a better understanding.

The museum is very good with a huge collection over several floors. There is something for everyone. I enjoyed the arts and crafts display on level two immensely! Such a wonderful and valuable collection of fascinating objects with high artist imprtance to everyday objects from the history of Myanmar that are breathtaking to see. At least two to three hours needed.

I understand the mixed reviews with this place. It actually wasn't on my radar of things to do. but someone i bumped into had a lonely planet book and this was one of the things on it. she was going, asked if i wanted to go, thus i went.
it is a little far out from the centre, with that said we walked it from where we stayed. it took a bout an hour or so. we really had nothing else to do, so the walk was a good way to get around the city.

we stayed there for a bit over an hour. it could have easier been more than that. It was about 4 floors i think. a lot of cool things to see.

I wonder if my disappointment was based on the lack of artefacts from earlier times. There were a lot of prehistoric bones and tools and late 19 and 20th century displays but not much inbetween. I'm told - though can't verify - that the museum was part emptied to supply the new museum in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw. If so, like graceful government buildings now abandoned, another sacrifice to this inexplicable move.
