Would have enjoyed the museum better if we had an English speaking guide. Although there were English translations, there were just not detailed enough for foreigners to understand who, why, what or how.
The museum was rather hot as the A/C were not efficient and some sections there were totally no ventilation at all. The restrooms were also under renovation and the ones in use were of poor hygienic condition.
No cameras or camera phones allowed inside. They have lockers for you to keep your belongings. A small fee for foreigners are charged for entrance.

I visited this Museum in 2004. That's a long time ago. This Museum is good during your first visit to Yangon. It gives you an overall picture of the country, people, history, language and culture. Please go with the mindset to understand and appreciate the people of this Nation. This is not a Museum for you to enjoy, admire or relax. However, it is a country that are resources and culture rich. How rich? Do visit the Gem Museum. It's a small Museum but you will have an idea thereafter.

“worth the visit”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

It was raining in the morning so we took a cab to the National Museum. We did not take one of the tour guides and were happy to have passed on the offer. Walking around it seemed like people with the guides were moving along very fast. We got to take our time and inspect everything. There is a really nice display of the tribal dress...i hate to say costumes. Amazing artifacts going all the way back to dinosuars. I was amazed at the vast collection. The painting gallery was a little dark and unfortunately had to many blank spots. It seemed like too many paintings were missing and we don't know why. It would have been nice to see what was missing. All in all it is a great view into the history and culture of this fascinating country.

“So-so, it would've been better.”

They have a very interesting museum. All their artifacts were amazing. Gold goblets with rubies and clothes of their late king and queens. They weren't exactly tourist friendly. Some of them were written in Burmese language and no translation at all. 4th floor was the only one that has air-conditioning for the paintings. Most of their artifacts were not enclosed in a glass case, anyone could just touch it and I also saw one of their staff wiping an 18th century stone elephant with a rag and dusting them too! I was shocked and laughed at the same time.

“Give it a miss”

There is an incredible collection of artifacts here, but the curatorship is so terrible as to be comic. What's more, the building itself just feels oppressive and uncomfortable. Some of the rooms are freezing and some are sweltering.
