Interesting day event. A slow trip around the capital. Very helpful ticket office on the platform. We have been on the railway twice and it is a good way to get a quick picture of Yangon. On each occasion we have got off at different stops and explored more on foot. A worthwhile activity.

Truthfully, there was not much to see from the train. Windows had darkened band across them, obstructing the view outside when passengers are seated. Riders also pulled shades down blocking the afternoon hot sun and also the view.

The interesting part, though, was not the view outside, but the action taking place inside the train. We enjoyed observing vendors selling baskets of fruit, competing with other vendors as they made their way up and down the aisles with delicious-looking bunches of grapes and other snacks.

We stayed on the train for about 45 minutes and arranged for a ride back. I would not recommend taking the train for 3 hours, the ride is bumpy and uncomfortable and there are more interesting things to see and do in Yangon.

It's a long slow journey but quite entertaining. You might have to stand for the first part of the journey as you leave the city, but seats free up after a few stations. Very interesting to observe the vendors walking through the train selling all kinds of products. The trains themselves seem to be mainly old Japanese commuter trains with diesel locomotives.

It's a 3 hour ride. It's super cheap. But biggest problem is the train is very uncomfortable. My wife didn't last the 3 hours and we got out of the train after an hour . It's very hot. Humid. And for some reason ventilation is very poor. Basically when the train is not moving, the train gets very stuffy. So if ur the type who easily gets motion sickness or r the type who is uncomfortable when it gets stuffy and hot, be prepared and forewarned. But one thing about this trip. It truly gives a great insight into the lives of the average person in Myanmar. After the trip (or a third of the trip for me), I realised a few things. For starters I felt I was very lucky. The people there r really living from day to day n r living poverty stricken lives but are noticeably very happy at the same time. Burmese ppl are the friendliest and warmest bunch. Hands down. More than thais. And definitely more than Vietnamese. But the unavoidable feeling I got after one hour of travelling on the train was that there are still many very poor people in this country which I humbly wish can improve as time passes with the new government at hand.

We really enjoyed this - it was great being amongst the people and seeing them interact and buy produce on the train. When we stopped there was a market on the train tracks - a really fun experience - just make sure you don't sit in the the tourist class seats as you will miss out big time.
