Right in the heart of the city, this beautiful pagoda may not be as spectacular as the go den Pagoda, but not very much less also. It is also a must see. The dome, the statuesque the various idols are most beautiful.

I was a little disturbed by the amount of calls for donations on my visit to Sule Pagoda. There's a donation for your shoes - I put mine in my backpack because I rarely want to exit the same way I enter in a pagoda - but they still insisted I donate. Then there's the entrance fee, which is minimal. Then on my visit after you pay for your ticket there are people calling out to you asking for donations for whatever cause they're supporting. I haven't even made it to the pagoda yet.

It is the center of the city; where all of the 7 mile, 8 mile, miles are calculated from (not Shwedagon). So that's an interesting fact. But when you look around, there's a multitude of Buddhas, small shrines, coves, statutes, bells, and big bulky rectangular prism donation boxes.

I went on a Wednesday afternoon. It wasn't busy. A lot of people were sleeping. A lot of people were praying and spending time just being there. There are some bookstores that no doubt have Buddhist teachings, political literature, and phrase books (for Burmese people learning English).

It truly pales in comparison to Shwedagon.

Now, I must warn you of the people outside of the Sule pagoda that want to exchange money with you. They will offer you a really decent exchange rate, and some will try to cheat you out of your money by slight of hand folding techniques. Be very aware. Be safe by just avoiding these people. You can get a less amazing exchange rate at an official money changer and they will not try to cheat you.

We visited Sule Pagoda early on a Sunday morning and were surprised how busy it was inside. As other reviews have noted it's very small and lacking the atmosphere of Shwedagon Pagoda, but as we hadn't visited Shwedagon yet we weren't able to make a comparison at the time.
We very much enjoyed watching the streams of people making offerings at the various images dotted around the site.
This was the first time we'd seen a Buddha image with flashing disco lights around the head, although we did see this on many occasions over the next few weeks.
A simple walk from Traders Hotel and the first stop on a walking tour of Yangon.

How do you compete with shwedegon pagoda when in yangon? Nothing special about it. Several very beautiful features. Worth a 15 minute visit if in the area.

An Interesting contrast to the grandeur and beauty of Shwegadon but easy location to visit in your walk around downtown Yangon. Sule is particularly beautiful at night and can be appreciated from the walkway over the street. From Here you can observe the wild auto traffic in the roundabout without being in the middle of it...truly an experience
