“Too many pretensions”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

In March 2013 we stayed two days in this hotel. I would not recommend this hotel. They have much pretentions: they act like they are afive star hotel but in my opinion it isn't. For instants the swimming pool: the water was milky instead of clear. I think this was because they didn't circulate the water. The pool is old and also the chairs, tables etc around the pool are. Often no fresh towels. The staff is mostly desinterested.

Our travel agency delivered flight tickets at the reception but when we wanted to pick them up, they couldnt find them any more. We had to ask four times before we got them.

The staff that did the breakfast were not attentive too. They didn't watch if weneeded coffee or tea and every time they forgot to put spoons at the cups.

The rooms and the beds are ok but again: some refurbishment could do much and also the hotel and its gardens should mainained much better.

During our stay they organised a big fashion show in the garden and they were rehursing two days long. That made a lot of noise and the only thing we could do is to leave the hotel. Complaining about it didn't have any effect.

When leaving the staff asked in a computerized way we liked our stay. We said: We're afraid not. They looked as if they couldn't believe we told them the truth and didn't make any suggestion for compensation.

So for us its clear that this is a hotel that the money is more important for than satisfied customers. For us a BIG MIN!!!

Dear Sir/Madam,
prever
Thank you very much for choosing Kandawgyi Palace for your recent stay in Yangon, Myanmar. We have read your comments about the hotel and its services on trip advisor. We greatly appreciate that you took time to write them, as our guests’ satisfaction is our main priority.
We have taken corrective actions to improve our services and facilities. However we regret to find that some of your concerns were not brought to the notice of the hotel management during your stay, as we could have immediately taken corrective action and responded to you swiftly. Our swimming pool was redesigned, extended by the end of last year and we invested on new pool beds. We do carry out daily pool water treatment to keep the water fresh, clean and clear. Perhaps, vacuuming process on the ground of pool was not completed by the time you visited. Water circulation take place 24 hours of the day and in addition vacuuming is done whole day from 08:00 in the morning to 18:00 in the evening and at late night. Fresh towels are provided by the pool bar staff. We carry out regular check and replenish them. In the event of many guest visiting the pool at the same time could result in a shortage and most towels used. However you can request for fresh once and the friendly staff in the pool bar could have got one for you.
With regards to the documents which were delivered to the FO from the travel agent usually are recorded and delivered to guest without delay. In this instance we are investigating if they were delivered and not recorded or were not delivered by the agent at the time you came over to inquire. Service staff at breakfast for not been attentive is noted and we regret for any inconvenience as we do train all staff to be polite and attentive at all times as it is our culture and tradition.
When private events take place by the pool and garden with music & entertainment, we advise the organizer to control the sound in order for our guests to have a relaxing stay. The hotel makes every effort to ensure the guest satisfaction is not at risk whilst these events take place.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your understanding and we hope to see you again soon at Kandawgyi Palace.

Kind regards

Beautiful property located on a park and a lake in the middle of the city. It was previously a British officers club during the colonial times, and had another incarnation as a museum. So a very historical place, and it feels like it. The service was a bit odd though, kind of formal and unnatural, which seems to be the case with all the super-fancy places in Myanmar that caters mostly to western travelers. You get a sense that government money HAS to be involved in running a place a like that.

I was disappointed when I was told that I could not stay here at the beginning of my tour in March for it was fully booked. I stayed at the Sedona then. Thank goodness. The front desk staff had a bad atittude- they were arrogant.
After traveling all day, we finally got here in the early evening and we were late for a banquet. After rushing to change and get ready, we found out that the RFID cards to our room were keyed in wrong. They did not apologize for their mistake and they acted as if it were our fault. We could not lock the door. Our tour guide told the staff at the front desk to please re key it and just lock our door as we were on our way out. When we got back, there was a big crowd at the check in desk. Luckily, one staff member recognized me and told me to come around the corner to pick up the key. We were in Room 108 on the first floor. The room was dark and musty. We called housekeeping because our airconditioner was not working and it smelled terrible in there. It was still 24 degrees Celsius by 11 PM. They brought in room deodorizer and sprayed the room but it was still stinky. Then , the two housekeepers adjusted the thermostat. One told me that I should not complain because the heater was on. I told her that I did not want the heater since it was hot and humid inside and outside. Then, a maintenance man came and he still could not figure out what was wrong. He excused himself to get a ladder and came back with another man. Then, a third man came. Meanwhile we (2 ladeis) were already in pajamas as it was 11 PM and we had to get up at 5 AM for an early flight to Bangkok, Thailand. They told us that we could wait until they finished fixing the air conditioner at midnight. The front desk staff apparently told them that. I was not happy and explained to the men that we were not waiting for them to fix it as we had been traveling all day that day and then would hadto get up early the next morning. That meant that we would practically be up all night. I asked to be moved to another room where the air conditioner worked. They finally moved us to Room 218 just before midnight. Had I not insisted that they move us to another room, we would have ended up watching 3 men repair our air conditioner in our pajamas close to midnight..
The hotel looked fancy but they were not gracious and could care less about their guests.
I was sorry that I even booked to stay here at all.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere.

We stayed two nights (one at the beginning of our tour and one at the end). Service is OK and mostly friendly. We stayed the first night in a room on 1st floor and the room was definitely renovated compared to the room on 4th floor where we stayed on the last night. Also the room amenities provided were different (e.g. one had no mouth wash) and the latter had a very annoying constant beep of the fire alarm sensor (I assume). The pool is not the most cleanliest one as a lot of birds seem to enjoy the pool area from above as well (a pool side clock would also help in respect to check the time as there seemed to be no staff around). Breakfast is nice, especially their Mohinga (which alternates with Kao Shwe noodles). Location close to Shwedagon Pagoda is indeed a big plus.

The Kandawgyi Palace Hotel is situated by a lake side and the view, especially in the early mornings and late evenings are excellent. It's a hotel which is at par with any upper end hotel anywhere in the world (not the Ritzes, but more like the Sheratons). The rooms are clean and comfortable, there are good options for dining in, the breakfast buffet is an extensive spread and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Pick one overlooking the lake

This hotel is close to everything, but almost nothing is walkable (except for the lake bridge behind the hotel). The lake view rooms are charming, the suits are very large, two T.V.s, lavish bathroom, the whole works.

The fish barbecue night is great fun! Everything from sushi to seviche and then the grilled fish. I much preferred eating outdoors along the wall facing the garden. Indoors was much too cold with glaring lights, suited for large groups but little atmosphere. One has to reserve for tables outside since there are so few for such a large hotel.

The pool is down by the lake and very cozy, but in Yangon one has so little time to just relax.
