“Peace & quiet in Yangon”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

We stayed there for two nights in November. The hotel is a little bit outside the centre of Yangon and also on the corner of a busy road, but neither of these aspects was an issue. The rooms are large and airy and well insulated. Room facilities are fine. The pool area is nicely laid out and it was good to relax there after a sweaty day's sightseeing.
We thought the food and beverage offering to be quite good and compared to equivalent hotels we stayed at elsewhere in Myanmar, prices where generally lower.
Staff were helpful and friendly and, yes, we would stay there again.

Perfect hotel, tucked away from the pot holes and mad traffic of Yangon.
An old merchants house, which has kept the wide, polished floorboards and spacious corridors. Comfortable, cool rooms.
There is a small swimming pool at the centre of the hotel, with a few trees around it- perfect tranquillity in the tropical heat.
The staff are all charming and unfailingly helpful. The food is excellent.
Thoroughly recommend.

The hotel could be more than it is, however the staff and especially the general manager and head chef are not accommodating. We brought a group of 23 people, planned months ahead and requested special meals. Our requests were essentially ignored and when speaking with the General Manager he did nothing to make up for the problem and the chef simply complained that he was too busy.
The staff at the front desk seemed disorganized and slow.
Our room was furnished in a way that in order to sit on the couch you had to pull out the chairs and street noise is an issue. Beds are super hard.

I enjoy this place because there are many quaint places, hidden corners, balconies. They have even some cigars to enjoy, and the small pool is a true gem. Food and wines are also pretty good. Friendly staff, and reasonable prices round up the picture.

Comfortable hotel however the food and service were bad. Got sick on my second day after a bad dinner. Please don't have high expectations when it comes to hotel service in Myanmar. They are just starting and the price you pay for the hotel does not live up to the inferior quality of service.

We stayed a total of 3 nights at the hotel, 2 at the beginning of the trip and 1 at the end. Both rooms were interior rooms facing the lovely swimming pool. These rooms had no street sounds, quiet at all times despite it being at a major traffic intersection and were some distance from the pool. The entire hotel gives the feel of colonial charm, from the welcoming staff to both the public and guest rooms. Many high quality local handicraft items are displayed throughout the hotel and are reasonably priced. All personnel were friendly and helpful. Our rooms were generous in size and nicely appointed. The bathrooms were good-sized and updated. Our only problem in both rooms was with water pressure in the shower: it varied considerably, running from scalding to cold at any time. Breakfasts were excellent, with a nice selection of foods, made-to-order dishes were available, and the quality of food was excellent. Service was first-rate. We did not eat at the restaurants for dinner as we prefer local foods when traveling and these were not offered here. The hotel is not surrounded by anything interesting to see or do in the evenings, so plan to taxi to other areas for dinners and entertainment. Overall, this was a great introduction to Myanmar and a great end to an enjoyable holiday.

Stayed here at couple of nights to rest up from a very long flight but the small, out-of-the-way Savoy was most restful and a charming albeit newly built colonial-style hotel. It's tucked away behind a walled courtyard from the bustle of the streets just outside. No elevators so had to walk up three stories to our top story Room 308 overlooking the small but pleasant pool. As with others we wouldn't recommend the restaurant as it's not only expensive for the area (approx. $15-30 USD a meal minimum) but is basically French cuisine with virtually no local dishes. Nearby with a 3-4 min. walk (with constant heavily congested traffic) are three or four good and much less expensive restaurants with either Burmese dishes or Thai that are very good. Staff was very friendly, polite and prompt to resolve any issue we had. The reception and lobby area is rather small and simple. The pool is in the interior courtyard of the hotel, unheated but very pleasant with drink and food service available poolside.

Complimentary in-room wifi was good and reliable, rooms spacious, beds most comfortable if somewhat firm, A/C and room ceiling fan, wooden floors and dark heavy teak furniture, shower stall of good size with "rain shower" type shower heads, bowl of fresh fruit in the room daily, etc.. The provided buffet breakfast was of a limited selection but had most anything from cold to hot food one would want with prompt service and good quality dishes. It's very near the Swedagon Pagoda but the rooms do not really look out on it as it's not tall enough and one can only make out the top spire of the pagoda from the upper level restaurant. The doorman or concierge can quickly hail a cab (all un-metered) for you that can take you most anyplace in the downtown area (with slow, often congested traffic to bog things down) for a very few dollars, just establish an agreed upon price first.

The Central Bank (CB) of Myanmar is just down the same street from the hotel within a 3-min. walk that offers a much better currency exchange rate than the hotel but of course is only open weekdays from about 9:30 to 4 pm. Airport exchange is equally good but better in the main terminal area rather than those immediately at the baggage claim area.

Room Tip: Upper third story rooms with views of the hotel pool are the best and quiet if you don't mind ha...

Dear johnandsandy,

Greetings from the Savoy Hotel Yangon!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay. We value all feedback as it helps get an insight into what our guests want to see more or less of.

Being a small boutique hotel, we keep our menus moving, meaning that the menus change every so often, unfortunately during your stay we were still preparing our change in menu. We are now offering a full Myanmar a la carte menu as well as western cuisine.

Indeed traffic has picked up in Yangon, making the roads more congested, however, the sights and people are as lovely as ever.

We hope to welcome you back in the near future to showcase our new editions; new lounge cafe, new menus and new breakfast buffet.

Best Regards,

Alex Ruether
