“Warmth among the budding city”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Still mesmerized by the experience in the city, the hotel added the warmth everytime we return from our trip around the city.
Every simple hello and smile, you could feel that it's from the heart. Or at least they did it so well, you couldn't tell it was fake. I think every traveller would know what I mean.
The room was comfy and clean daily, doorman clearly on break would still rush to open the door for you when your hands are full, bellhop would help your luggage and not stand there waiting for tips, a receptionist would put down her work to help identify your problem and not push you away or hold you. We receive "Service" at the hotel.

The only 3 disadvantages to this hotel:
1) you have to walk through the breakfast lounge to get to the pool area,which...looks a bit odd to take a dip in. If there was another route to the pool area, it was definitely not clearly labeled.

2) If you have chosen "Lake View" for your room,2nd floor is definitely a no-no to stay in. Whatever Lake there was will be blocked by the palm trees and all you get is Palm Tree view.

3) No immediate shops around to get additional drinking water or snacks within the vicinity. The closest we could find:
a) Out from main door, turn left at the main road, 1 or 2 road side mobile "kiosk".
b) Out from side door near pool, turn right, about 30-45 mins walk on the left.
But the area is growing and things change every day. It could be different when you are there and I am not kidding.

Make sure you grab a map from the concierge and a card that label your return destination in Myanmar language.
Apparently, there was a "Chatrium Motel" somewhere in another part of town.

Breakfast was a beauty but noisy with the China conference goers when I was there (unfortunately) who keep knocking into my chair. Yes. The proximity of chair to chair could be a little intensifying.
If you are claustrophobic, you may like to get their room service. Nothing to complain and compliment really, but if your salt tolerance is high, you may like to try their curry. It's actually quite weirdly delicious. You hjave to try to know what I mean. Ha.
There is a steak house and a chinese restaurant within the hotel. But unfortunately it was not our aim to travel that far to Myanmar to try something that we could get in our country. Nevertheless, we heard the steak house will be "a little bit expangsive".

The Spa rate is cheaper than many other countries we been to,but certainly one of the higher rated one. It was ok.

Tipping was not mandatory but be appreciative and not overdo it. We would love to return and not be extorted.

Travelling Time:
Most roads around are single-lane. With vehicle value dropped by more than half recently, cars are getting more n more on the road.
- To/fro airport about 30-45 minutes. Jam at least double it.
- To/fro town area/chinatown about 20 minutes.

Taxis:
-From airport : 4000kyat on normal taxi. 9000kyat on private car on hire.
-To airport : 6000-7000kyat at hotel. (we received several quotes)
-to town area : 2000kyat.
-Rush hour : it's normal to cost about 1000-2000kyat in addition.

It's common for taxis to be have their friends or family around while they drive around to work. Kind of like for company. So, when you see a taxi occupied, you can still try flagging. But most don't speak english. Do get map from hotel.

Room Tip: If you like Lake View, 2nd floor is out.

This hotel nestles on a quiet corner of Yangon by the lake. It has a very impressive swimming pool. Stay in odd number rooms to get the swimming pool view. The rooms are newly renovated and very clean. Bathroom is marbled and luxurious. Services were excellent. Most staff understand English.

Room Tip: Choose odd number rooms together the spectacular view of the swimming pool

Stayed there for the first time for 4 nights while on a business trip to Myanmar. Normally, I would have stayed at the Traders Hotel, but the latter keeps raising its room rates even though my last stay there was only in February. This is the unfortunate reality in Yangon, where the recent influx of both tourists and business investors has caused an alarming increase in hotel room rates due to the severe shortage of rooms, especially in Yangon. I remember paying only US$70-80 per night at the Park Royal when I first visited Yangon in 2006 (Traders was about the same). Times have changed!

The Chatrium was comfortable, but lacked the freshness and modernity of the Traders. The bedsheets were clean and the room size was adequate, but the bathroom could do with better plumbing as the hot cold mixer was basic and the shower lever controlled both the temperature and the strength of the water flow either in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. The square tiles in the shower had this odd black-speckled design, which made the shower cubicle appear constantly dirty even if it was not - wrong choice of tiles! My room on the 3rd floor overlooked the swimming pool, but there was not a soul in sight everytime I looked out of my windows because it was, after all the rainy season and there were light showers almost everyday. I must say that I really enjoyed the daily breakfast at the hotel as it had a good spread of Western and Asian choices, including the tasty Burmese Mohinga and other soupy noodles. Although, I felt the absence of the crunchy crackers in the Mohinga was a bit of let down. The location of the Chatrium just North of the Kandawgyi Lake is in a rather remote part of town as, unlike the Traders or the Park Royal, there is no shop or cafe outside the hotel for one to just pop over. You have to take a taxi to take you to other areas of Yangon if you want to shop, sight see or just to get a bite. The pros to this is, of course that there is no busy traffic or throngs of pedestrians around the hotel, which actually lends it an air of privacy and peacefulness.

Having stayed in the Chatrium for several months now, I would like to underline just how professional, helpful and friendly all of the staff of the hotel have always been. Whether in reception, in the Emporium, or in the 9th floor reception and club lounge, I've always been made to feel both comfortable and welcome

And a special word of praise is deserved for Moon's Rum Sour - a recipe to be treasured !

We just return from a 5 nights stay in this 5 star rating hotel and she does carry the status well. The welcome service upon entering the hotel has set a good impression, from serving towel, drinks till personalized check-in service. We were most pleased by the Chinese restaurant, Tiger Hill and Emporia Restaurant service staff, whom went the extra mile in remembering our daily eating habits and always smiling. The rooms are good size with clean and well maintained interior, where the housekeeping team never fail to stock up the amenities in the room. The entire hotel staff greets you with a smile making you feel welcome. The food is good and reasonably priced. The pool and gym facility are also great. The only thing which hopefully when the hotel industry in Myanmar gets more competitive, would be the room rate. Other than that, we would return again should we visit Yangon again. Keep up the good work.
