Good 5* Hotel on the Royal Lake Yangon

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 15, 2013
Stayed here two nights as part of a guided tour in a superior room on the 3rd floor overlooking the car park which was fine and not noisy. The beds are comfortable, we had two practically double beds, with a bathroom with both shower and bath. Free Wi-fi in room was a tad slow but such a blessing. You get the codes as you check in, saves dragging down when you realise you need one. Plentiful complimentary bottled water; a mini-bar fridge (we used for our own drinks); good coffee-making facilities; in-room safe and toiletries; slippers and wraps. Used the swimming pool which was a good temperature. Air conditioning is OK but rather noisy, I needed earplugs. The room had a balcony which you were not allowed to use due to not wanting biting insects inside. Breakfast was a really good buffet selection of traditional dishes and western full-English and anything in between. A eclectic mix of nationalities including locals. I would stay again if I were in the City.

First we have to understand the constraints in Myanmar, most modern day essentials such as banking system, the internet, power supply, etc. Therefore what's normal elsewhere are luxuries here.

Stayed 4 nights here at the Chartrium and we they are charging over the top (about $300/nett/night) inclusive of wifi internet and breakfast. The location is not so far from the local attractions and lake, however, that means if you have car transport (recommended but pricey btw) and not of foot (if that is what you are looking for then the likes of Traders' Hotel should click)

My room was nice but seen better days, already tired and certain smell and tinted showed. I was on the city/garden view which was rubbish (that means nothing to look at) the lake view should be the only choice. My wifi internet was mediocre at best, had to go down and get the new passwords almost everyday, sometimes twice. Internet speed was decent anyhow. A la Carte coffee shop was nice and quite tasty (prefer some hotel meals and drink for safety sake), breakfast variety good enough.

Staff were great, credit card payment in Myanmar possible if they are expecting you few days in advance, else US Dollar as prime. Outside the hotel you will seriously need cash for everything. Oh if you are also plan to visit temples here (a must and they are everywhere) make sure you're on average sandals and not the over the top pairs as everyone has to leave it outside.

Overall I have average feeling toward Chatrium hotel, not bad but not enough to come back for my next visit a month later. Not a problem for them am sure as they are really overbooked.

Room tip: lake view only...

We arrived early from our overseas flight and they were able to place us in a "Pagoda view" room. (The price is the same for either a Pagoda view or a Lake view.) I hope I can successfully post the photo that I took of the Shwedagon Pagoda from our window. The view was worth the extra dollars compared to a room looking the other way.

From the hotel to the Shwedagon was a $2 taxi ride so there is no reason to walk. Save your legs for the pagoga.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. Hillary Clinton stayed there when she and President Obama visited Myanmar recentlyl

Room tip: Definitely ask for a pagoda view.

This is a very modern hotel with a fantastic pool area. Lovely grounds. I can't say anything is convenient in Yangon, but I only stayed there for two nights. The breakfast is excellent. Interestingly, everything is priced in US dollars, including the menu. As is the case in all of Myanmar, credit cards are not accepted (January 2013). There is a currency exchange in the lobby and all dollar exchanges in Myanmar are at a fixed rate.

There frequently are events in the pool area so get a room on the other side. The events end at 9:30 PM however, so it isn't much of an inconvenience.

The rooms are very nicely done.

Room tip: Get a room that doesn't face the pool.

We stayed here for two nights. We enjoyed the hotel: the rooms are clean, great breakfast, good service, nice swimmingpool, nice view on the shweddagon pagode and the lake from our room. There was wifi in the lobby and on the 9th floor, but not in our room (7th floor). It was very easy to take the taxis and go everywhere. However, we also walked to a few places. We took a massage, and it was good, a bit overpriced.

For the first two days of my stay, I was on the 9th floor, which is the concierge floor. It was wonderful. Excellent staff, tastefully decorated room, extra touches like an ironing board, plush bathrobe, slippers, afternoon tea, cocktails and hors d' oeuvres in the evening, and more. Then I needed to move to the 5th floor, and what a difference ! Bland decor, no clock, no ironing board, tacky art work on the walls, thin bathrobe, less lighting, comfortable, but no extras and a rather tired room. In general, lighting in all of the bathrooms needs to be improved as putting on makeup was a challenge.

There is a lovely pool, but do bring ear plugs if you are an early to bed kind of person, as the hotels hosts many weddings which can be a bit noisy as they are generally set up outside by the pool. The hotel is located near a large park, which is nice if you like to explore and walk on your own. The wi-fi worked well and there is a small gym where you can work out. Nice city view on the water side of the hotel. Breakfast is included and had an exceptional selection of food from around the world.

Room tip: The concierge floor is pricey, but worth it if you are willing to spend the money. Hotels in Yangon are expensive due to a current shortage.
