“Highly Recommended as a ' Must Stay' hotel in Yangon!”
Reviewed June 6, 2014

I was in Yangon on business matters every month from March to May and stayed in this hotel even when it was still named Traders Hotel. From check-in to check out, service was excellent with a personalized touch. You can feel the warm hospitality from the staff everywhere. The rooms live up to the Shangri-La standards of elegance and comfort. Wifi and internet connections are never a problem here compared to other places in the city. Dining is a great experience in their food outlets - ask for their Kaya Toast at breakfast at the Cafe Sule.

Room Tip: Rooms with view of the Sule Pagoda offer a spectacular sight at night.

sule shangrila is a very nice hotel, the interiors of the lobby is very pleasing. we were given the delux rooms with the view of the shwedegon pagoda .the room was very spacious and comfortable. they also allowed us to use the club lounge and the evening snacks were very good, the coffee shop had a great variety for vegetarians and the chef who is from india made a special indian thali for my son for dinner. we had a very relaxing stay.

We had originally reserved a room at the Traders through our travel agent and were a bit surprised that the name had changed when we got there. But no worries there. It was odd to have to go through airport-like security when we wanted to enter the hotel but I understand that they had a bombing there several months earlier and were instituting new security measures. (The confiscated a large chef's knife that I had bought at a blacksmith's shop in Inle Lake. It was in my checked luggage. Kept it for me until I left the hotel.)

All the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very nice, typical of any upscale hotel in any large city in the world. Big deep bathtub in the bathroom.

Since this was our honeymoon they also had a special honeymoon cake and flowers waiting for us in the room. Nice touch.

The huge (and I mean huge) breakfast buffet was just fun. Myanmar specialties, Indian food, Chinese food, made to order noodle soups, make to order eggs and crepes, pastries, fruits, freshly juiced juices, Thai food, cereals, etc. etc. It was an adventure in eating every morning.

We also dined there one evening for the seafood buffet. A bit pricey but all you can eat seafood was a real treat. Lots of other choices there, as well.

We used a local travel agency, Go Go Star Travels, to book our entire trip and Ma Liang and staff did a great job of handling all the details. She was able to book our room for less than $200 US so we were able to splurge for a couple of nights at the end of our trip.

Easy walking distance to the Bogyoke Aun Sung Market and Chinatown. We always save all our shopping until the end of the trip so this location was great for us.

Would definitely go there again. And again.

This property changed its name from Traders to Sule Shangri-La while I was there in April 2014. On arrival it was a bit concerting that you had to run your bags and belongings through a security scanner. Not all other hotels in the area are a security conscious. I guess that's a good thing. Service was excellent at check in and during my stay. The room was typical of Shangri-La, elegant and well furnished. And quiet. Good selection of TV programs on the TV. Good internet (for Myanmar). The common areas are well furnished. I particularly liked the restaurant which served an excellent and varied buffet. It's open 24hrs. If you don't feel like a full meal there is a very good small cafe that serves sandwiches and pastries etc. A main level bar also serves light meals. There is a bar on the second level. I did not try out the open air pool - it was too hot to go outside for long but it looked attractive. The location is near the centre of town which can be a bit chaotic at times with heavy traffic. Some of the newer hotels are in the outer suburbs or around the lakes where it may be less hectic. However it was an easy and inexpensive taxi ride to the must-see Shwedegon Pagoda. The ATM in the hotel was being installed (or reinstalled I'm not sure which) at the time of my visit but there was another just across the street. The cost (for Yangon) and not in high season was reasonable and good value for money. Highly recommended.

The bottom line is prices are high in Yangon and the value for this hotel is poor compared to the rest of the region but it is a solid and safe bet for a comfortable hotel and facilities that work.

Cleanliness was average with noticeable dust and cobwebs above the bath near the lighting and a shower curtain that was a little funky with a damp smell however I noticed they had changed it before the next day (without asking).

Overall an over priced and below average luxury hotel but due to location and choice it is probably one of the more consistent options but just don't pass out when you see the rate.

We stayed three nights at the then Traders hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it, a R & R after weeks of travelling in Burma. A well appointed room, air conditioning that functioned, crisp sheets, internet speed. We were on the Club floor. Breakfast was served in the Club and was excellent. Well trained staff who wanted to serve and help. The evening snacks were wonderful, in fact the best bread and butter pudding ever tasted. Lovely evening view from Club lounge.
Hotel very convenient for downtown, all is walkable.
Negative - understandable but the level of security was disagreeable.

Room Tip: If you want to avoid the mass of tourists, ngo employees and unruly children, take a room on the clu...

This was my second stay at a Traders hotel, and both times I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I was staying in a "Traders Club" room, which provides access to the "Club" lounge. The Club lounge in Rangoon is on the top floor, and has great views out across the city. The Traders Club has a fantastic complimentary happy hour, so much good food. There are also copious amounts of snacks and soft drinks available during the day. The only downside of the Club is the food is so good it might put you off wanting to go out and try the local cuisine which is delicious. I had breakfast in the Club each morning, and it was one of the best breakfasts I have had at a hotel.

My room was clean, large and well equipped. I heard minimal noise from the corridors or neighbouring rooms.

The hotel swimming pool is clean and large enough to properly exercise in. The hotel gym is well equipped, clean and with a good range of weights etc.

The hotel bar is great if you like the sensation of suffocating on cigarette smoke. I would suggest avoiding it at all costs.

The hotel is centrally located, and provides a good base for tourists and business.

Room Tip: Go for a Traders Club room. Higher up for the views, and away from potential street noise. Also the...
