“An Extravagent Affair!”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

If you're here for a business trip or even holiday this is the perfect place to stay! The facilities were great! A well kept gym and great pool! The restaurant was absolutely amazing! The a la carte menu is definitely worth a look! The food was amazing and the staff at the restaurant were amazingly professional! They were about to give me the menu but handed it to me back to front (Although there was no real front or back) and then she started saying how sorry she was! I was a bit shocked! I had never experienced such service in my life! Then when collecting the menus I was about to pick mine up to give to the man and he assured me it was fine! Wow!

The hotel rooms were amazing! Very well kept and nice views of the city from both sides of the building! Beds, pillows and blankets were very comfy and soft! And even though there were building works going on you wouldn't even know unless you read the notice they have in the room!

It is also a good location as just down the road are the markets!

Altogether a terrific experience and will definitely come back!

All you would expect from a Shangri'la hotel. Great for business travelers but also good for a tourist base. Walking distance to Scott's market. Service very good and the executive floor worth the extra $$.

Room Tip: The hotel is currently undergoing renovations but they are managing it very well.

We had an excellent one night stay at the Traders on our last night in Burma. Firstly, it should be noted that this is a business style hotel and we would not recommend it for a longer stay in Yangon on vacation unless you want a full service business style hotel without much culture. (We'd highly recommend the Savoy or Governor's Residence for a more memorable experience.) That caveat aside, the Traders was great in every way. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the room was one of the nicer hotel rooms we have enjoyed in some time. (It had just been renovated, so be sure to ask for one of the renovated rooms.) On our departure day we had a late flight. We were able to leave our bags and use the hotel gym/ spa for the rest of the day, which was a nice perk allowing us a shower before dinner and heading off to the airport. We'd highly recommend the Traders if you're looking for a business hotel in Yangon and/ or you're just transiting Yangon for one night.

This was my first trip to this wonderful country, and certainly won't be my last. We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of April and can't recommend this hotel enough as a base to explore the city.

Taking a step back, I'd recommend booking directly through the Shangri-la website as opposed to a hotel deals website. The rates are as competitive and there are no surprises. As well as breakfast inclusive and free WiFi, we chose a package with return transfers to and from the hotel. Whilst it's more expensive than a local taxi at the airport, the hotel cars are cleaner, air conditioned, drivers speak great English and also take the time to answer your questions and almost are a little tour guide-ish in talking you through things.

It's worth asking the driver to stop by Aung San Suu Kyi's house on the way to the hotel as a quick photo opportunity. Whilst the wall looks like any other, it is a large part of the country's history and the house drivers are only too willing to oblige.

As for the hotel, whilst it's certainly more modern than say the Governors Residence, Strand or the Savoy and doesn't have that Colonial feel, you don't really miss it. It's worth popping to the other places for a drink, afternoon tea or dinner, we did all 3, but you'll find the Traders perfect for getting about whether as a tourist or for business.

Nice touches are check-in directly in your room, avoiding a sometimes busy lobby, the option to pay your bill in cash (US$ or local Kyat) therefore avoiding a 4% levy when using a credit card, and flexibility on check-in and check-out times. We had an early flight in from Singapore, and half expecting to have to occupy ourselves for a couple of hours were pleasantly surprised to be checked in by 11am.

The rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped. All the mod cons are available and WiFi access throughout the hotel was quick and easy. Something you need as mobile access in the country is terrible when roaming. It doesn't matter whether your room is over looking the pool or the main road, it'll warm up nicely at some stage with the heat so it's well worth keeping the aircon on and curtains drawn.

In terms of services, breakfast is a must. Covers all the regions and the quality is brilliant. If you're back early from either site-seeing or meetings, then the buffet lunch at US$21 or afternoon tea at US$10 far out weigh the other main hotels above in terms of cost, quality & quantity. The pool and gym are good, and it's well worth a lazy hour at some stage during the day by the pool. Staff and service around the pool are a little scarce but that's just a minor point. Each day should be finished by a quiet drink in the Gallery bar as a recommendation.

Special mention needs to go to the staff. They couldn't be more genuine, kinder or helpful. Everyone from the Concierge, driver and front of house who gave us recommendations on local restaurants to eat at, local bars to drink at and sites to visit to the waitresses and lobby staff who remember your name and lastly house keeping who not only remember what your tastes are, ie tea or coffee, but leave you a little personal note each day!

Sule Pagoda, Aung San Market are all walking distance. We even walked to the Strand one day, and as for getting to places such as 19th Street, Botahtaung Pagoda, the Gem Museum or the Lying Down Buddha, nothing is more than 10 - 20 minutes away.

I'll definitely use this hotel as a base again, either as a tourist or for business. You feel like you're in the heart of the city and not removed from it, and I think that's important when you're visiting somewhere like Yangon.

Room Tip: Go go a high floor, on the main road so that you get a view of the City Train Station, church and Su...

Hotel costs are now notoriously high in Yangon due to limited supply, so one must bear this in mind when comparing to hotels in neighbouring countries like Thailand at a similar cost. For business hotels in Yangon the options are limited, and from what I've seen Traders is the best of the options at the moment.

Check-in was fast and front desk staff friendly.

Rooms are functional with surprisingly fast complimentary wifi, ample plugs for charging, and a flatscreen TV with a range of international channels. Lighting was good and bathroom well equipped with a steady supply of hot water. Only issue I found was the 'do not disturb' switch is set near to the bathroom light and I inadvertently turned it on one day so maid service was skipped.

There are a few food options in the hotel- a buffer on the ground floor, international and chinese options upstairs, and a pub on the third floor. In addition, the lobby offers snacks and coffee and is a good (though sometimes rather busy) meeting spot.

Hotel is in the heart of the city with Bogyoke (Scott's) market a short walk away.

There was a note in the room saying renovations are taking place and apologising for the noise, however our group was out all day so we did not hear any disturbance.

Overall a very good stay.

By no means cheap , this hotel is at the top end of the price range for Myanmar. Hotels are generally pricey anyway in Yangon. I was not disappointed though. The quality was excellent. I had a Traders Club room with a great view of the city. Hotel staff where extremely friendly and helpful. The facilities where fantastic. The restaurants - most impressive. You will not find a better buffet breakfast anywhere. I would stay there again for sure. Location is good too.

Room Tip: Traders Rooms with a view are a good choice.

Lost reservation kicked off my stay. Rooms were over priced and not very modern. no prior warning of the refurbishments from too early in the morning including Sundays when they werent supposedly meant to happen. Hopefully other guest will enjoy the benefits. Poor standard of service and food knowledge in the main areas of the hotel. Though the Traders Club Lounge was first class in service standards and food. Great Location
