“A piece of treasure and history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2014

We tried The Strand Hotel at the beginning and at the end of our stay in Myanmar and loved it. It's interior is very well maintained and carries a great piece of history with it. You feel royal at that luxury hotel!
The staff is very friendly and perfectly trained, be it the concierges, the front desk assistance, the restaurant and bar staff or the butlers. All speak very good english and are very attentive.
The rooms are splendid and very spacious. We had some welcoming chocolates in our room, fresh fruit every day and nice bed time sweets (coconut jelly) - and the bathroom is one of a kind - spacious and luxurious!
The sales executive, Honey, helped us arrange a "fish market tour" in the city, which we highly recommended anyone visiting Yangon - despite the early waking up at 6am... Honey is a lovely person, very helpful and professional and we were very thankful for that tip!
On the last evening we also tried the fine dining restaurant and were glad we did - the food is delicious, the interior an eye catcher and the local music rounding it all up to a very fantastic stay for us!

I mostly enjoyed the bar which is in old style, immaculate setting, traditional classy service, and wonderful Cigars from Cuba and Dominican Republic. Try their signature drink, the aptly named "Stranded in Paradise". Restaurant serves good food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately no swimming pool.

We stayed at The Strand Yangon at the beginning of our Myanmar travels (Feb 2014) and enjoyed the aging splendor of this hotel. The rooms were large and nicely appointed with deep woods and oversized windows bringing in the sunlight. The Lobby area large and comfortable with knowledgeable staff there and on each floor holding keys and turning the beds with care.

The main restaurant was serviceable in an old world style. Service was slow and the food was weak, but the ambience is delightful. Tea Service was as I desired it, and I imagined writers and lovers dining in decades past. Wireless was spotty. The location is near the port and close to sites. Yangon city is gritty, diverse, with beautiful residents and colorful markets.

Room Tip: Facing the front or south are best rooms for light and quiet

From arrival to departure, the staff was welcoming, happy to see you and very helpful. This colonial style hotel is a true gem and a welcome home away from home. Most of the staff spoke English so language was not an issue at all. We had an executive suite which had a bedroom and sitting room in addition to a large bathroom with separate shower and tub. There are 2 prong plugs which work with North American appliances as well. The wi-fi in the room worked better than anywhere else in Myanmar and there were several news channels in English - CNN Asia and BBC. While the room has large windows, the only view was of the Australian Embassy across the street. The room was in very good condition and was kept clean by the efficient house-keeping staff.

We ate in the less formal restaurant several times which had a varied menu, including local dishes, fish, meat and even a hamburger. Breakfasts are a la carte, but there was a good selection of cereals, eggs, pancakes etc. The food was always good and nicely presented. There are also some shops which sell high quality arts, crafts and jewelry.

Yangon is a very large and chaotic city, but from the hotel it was easy to walk to the port or to the large park in front of city hall in the downtown area. We found the hotel charming and a central location from which to tour the main attractions of the city. Would definitely stay here again.

We travel extensively and have stayed in many fine hotels around the world. When we walked into the Strand, you feel transported in time to the days the British Empire in Burma. The lobby is well preserved and so old world, The rooms are understated elegance. The staff treats their guests as if they are still in the 1930's. Breakfast was absolutely amazing. Best eggs benedict ever! The stay here was an experience and we highly recommend it if you are in Yangon.

Besides a bit of history and a minor amount of old-world charm, this hotel has very little to offer. The location near the water sounds like it should be a good thing but is not. There is no outdoors (no garden or rooftop or pool) for hanging out or relaxing. The rooms are big but the furnishings are very old and in poor condition. There is never anyone at the bar. Service is hit or miss, as is common in Myanmar.

One of the classiest hotel we've ever stayed at. Fantastic location in the centre of the city, amazing walks start from the hotel and take you to all colonial buildings. Inside the hotel is super-classy and at the same time understated, we liked it a lot more than other "heritage hotels" in South East asia. We also liked it a lot more the the Governor's Residence and would definitely recomment it over it (although Governor's Residence is also a perfectly fine and nice property). A step back in time!
