“One Of Those Chance To Be Stay In A Bit Of History”

Loved the entire experience of The Strand. From the old creaky thick teak planks, ceiling fans, high ceiings, and the attentive staff nearby....this place was great. Well-trained staff and first class attention to detail. There are more modern hotels being built around town. Can't wait to go back in a few months to see the changes in Yangon. However, my first choice will always be The Strand and a chance to stay in a bit of history.

We stayed at the Strand on two occasions in November. On the first occasion we arrived late at night at this beautiful colonial hotel with a floor to ceiling atrium. A phalanx of smiling men greeted us and while we checked in, our luggage was whisked away. The manager welcomed us and led us to our enormous suite where we met our personal butler. There was a welcome bottle of wine with fruits and a lacquer box of cakes. We had complimentary cakes and fruit daily. The beds were king sized and comfortable and the air conditioning excellent, The room was very quiet. The bathroom was enormous with a very powerful rainforest shower. The toiletries were in little glass vials and were very luxurious after a long journey, Breakfast was enjoyed either in the dining room or arranged by our butler in our rooms, brought up in large stacking lacquer tiffin boxes. The pomelo salad was very refreshing and the eggs benedict were well done. The croissants were freshly baked. We can't wait to go back.

Don’t waste your $ on an executive suite. Night 1 of 3 was in exec suite room 102. BIG room with lots of wasted space and loud music from something down the street. The room is not in as good condition as the 2nd room I stayed in, showing much more wear. Had trouble getting hot water. Complementary bottle of sparkling wine. I was awoken at 6 and 7:30 am by loud music from the street or a car on the street outside. Got the earplugs out to be awoken at 8:00 by music loud enough to breech the earplugs!

Room 2 was 115, a double. Lovely, more charming, better condition, same amenities (with the exception of the wine) and no hot water issues. MUCH quieter on side street across from the embassy. Toilet handle did not always work quite right. I also stayed in 216 on the way home, just as nice (and maybe a little bigger) than 115.

Towels are enormous bath sheets (too big for a hair wrap). Good linens on bed. Beds comfortable enough. Plenty of bottled water. Minibar. Coffee and tea-making set (check the sugar before you use it… there was a bug in the sugar in 102). Complementary bottled water. Hairdryer in room. Wifi occasionally had issues, but worked much better than I was expecting for Myanmar. Nice and clean. Breakfast service was prompt enough. Americans will need to bring an electrical adapter (3 squared prongs). Late checkouts not accepted.

We decided to go to the Strand Bar for our last night in Myanmar after a two week holiday. We arrived at 5pm on Friday night to find only 4 other guests. Service was a bit slow, but the drinks signature cocktails were very nice. The Strand signature cocktails are heavily based on Mandalay Rum. The bar got busier and busier through the night since it was happy hour and half price drinks. But that made the beer normally priced at $6 just about bearable. I was amazed that they claimed that they didn't take credit cards. Although credit cards are relatively new to Myanmar, but quite a few hotels now accept them. When I asked for the bill they had added a 10% tip and a 5% government tax as stated on the drinks list. However I was very angry that when I paid the bill in dollars I was short changed. When I found the waiter again he said that it was hotel policy to round up the total of the bill. I stated that they had already been tipped and I would like my change, but he stated that they didn't keep small notes. After I stated that I wanted my change the money was finally handed over. The people of Myanmar are wonderful, friendly and possibly the most giving and kindest that I have ever had the privilege of meeting. The bar staff in the Strand should remind themselves of what the rest of their nation are like. This left a bad taste in my mouth after a wonderful trip to Myanmar.

Spending two days at The Strand, a former British Hotel built in 1901. Very large rooms with King bed, living room, vast bathroom, desk area with 15 to 18 foot ceilings. Full service facility with butler service.

Intended to partake of High Tea, but decided to visit the Bar instead. What utter serendipity!
Sitting on bar stools and sipping decently-priced Strand Slings (always regretted not having Singapore Slings at the Raffles many years ago) we were soon joined by a delightfully vivacious and vociferous crowd of Americans with whom we swapped life experiences in this magnificently restored bar that shouted echoes of its British colonial past, which had been shared by many of my forebears. We were reluctant to part company with these jovial, passing hail-fellow-well-met acqaintances, but that is the fate of travellers. Excellent smiling service from the staff made our experience so very special. Visits to the adjacent art gallery and antiques outlet put the icing on the cake.

What a great start to our Myanmar holiday, staff were all very attentive, rooms were massive, with a very comfy bed with amazing pillows. The shower was perhaps one of the best I have ever had.And though the grill was full for our night the cafe served us perfectly.
