“Symbol of Burmese elegance”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We stayed there for 2 nights in an executive suite in July.

Room - spacious and clean. Could do with some renovation as furniture and the bathroom looked a bit tired. The suite opens up to a huge terrace, it is a shame that no effort has been made to tidy up the terrace; it would make an excellent spot for morning coffee or afternoon reading.

Service - attentive and thoughtful. Staff is seen and not heard. Requests are executed speedily and accurately.

Facilities - no pool and not many places to sit around. Free wifi is hit and miss. No phone roaming for select service providers in Yangon. Interesting shops and River Gallery houses some colourful, affordable contemporary pieces.

Restaurant - food is superb; fresh, tasty and inexpensive.

Bar - heavenly! Cocktails (Strand Crush and Strand Sour) not to be missed. Usd2.5 each!!!!

Overall: A quiet, nostalgic, romantic and charming place worthy of visit.

Get in The Strand in Yangon is like traveling in time. And not just because the hotel has a long history and it is very well preserved. Traveling to Burma today has something of time traveler, trapping, which makes you feel like the explorers of the century, when they reached remote and distant territories.
The Strand offers clean rooms, spacious and comfortable, which are like apartments. It seems that one should have arrived there with a large trunk full of clothes, china and utensils to stay and live. The service is kind and correct. It is expensive but well worth the experience.

I was pleasantly surprised with the Strand. It's a great hotel with large, comfortable rooms and wonderful beds. It's more rough hewn than Raffles or the Oriental Bangkok. Some of the beautiful hard wood floors are a bit uneven or might creak but it's still a luxury hotel with tons of character and a great staff. My room was big, quiet with a nice sitting area, adjacent drawing room with a large desk, spacious bathroom w/ separate bath and shower, flat screen tv, mini bar, daily fresh fruit, and safe in the closet. There was a 24 hour butler on my floor and he was always attentive and pleasant. I really enjoyed my stay here and would certainly return next time I'm in Yangon.

Room Tip: The exterior looks pretty plain but once inside it's a nice, comfortable, cozy hotel with a grea...

Still an excellent choice in Yangon, although may be eclipsed soon given the amount of hotel construction. Rooms ver large and clean. Service impeccable, including an all-night butler. Food in dining room ver good, try the Mohinga soup for breakfast, considered by many to be the national dish. Does take Visa and there is an ATM machine in the lobby.

The Strand is an institution for more than a century. I stayed there 25 years ago when it was in a bad state but was still showing its grandeur. Now it has been refurbished keeping the same atmoshpere.
Rooms are nicely decorated and the bathrooms are beautiful. Lot of space which makes the room look like a flat rather than a hotel room.
Very good service from the front desk and the butler service at each floor. The restaurant is very nice with very good service. The bar is an institution in the hotel!
Not to be missed is the Art Gallery on the ground floor. Very nice display of contemporary Myanmari painters.

We stayed at the Strand for a couple nights during our Myanmar trip. This place is just awesome if you're into colonial design. Its so charming that you think you are back in the glory old days of British rule in Myanmar. The staff are very polite and friendly, you get to have a butler on service round the clock on each floor. The rooms are just huge and its just lovely and well appointed. One of the good thing is that the hotel is centrally located and just a minute or two walk from the only ATM machine in town. I would say the best thing is the staff helping me to get a flight booking changes on the last minute as well as the GM for recommending us a place to stay in Bagan which was a big plus as we enjoyed our stay there as well.

Hang out in the bar for some cocktails during the happy hour.:)

We stayed at the Strand in April and had a wonderful experience. The room was very large and the service by the "butlers" on each floor was exceptional. We loved the attractive lobby, the bar, and the excellent food in the informal dining room (we never ate in the more upscale one). One negative for us was the lack of a swimming pool. Although we loved the Strand, to be honest I wish we'd stayed at the Governor's Residence.
