“The staff really make this hotel”
Reviewed May 16, 2012

Stayed at Inya Lake for 4 nights and had a wonderful experience. Extremely friendly and helpful staff! The hotel itself is quite grand, albeit old and unattractive from the outside. The beds were soft but very comfortable, the bathroom was aged but perfectly functional (excellent water pressure in the shower!), the buffet breakfast was superb.

It is outside of town, right on Inya Lake where many locals do their morning exercise before it gets too hot, so it is a nice quiet place to stay. At night you can see the Shwedagon Pagoda lit up in the distance. The hotel runs a shuttle bus into town at 9.30 each morning but you will probably find that you will be catching taxis more often than not. These cost 3,000 - 4,000 kyat (about US$4 - 5) each time and take about 20 minutes to get downtown (with traffic it could take about 40 minutes). It's worth planning your day so that you have few trips back to the hotel given the distance.

There is an Italian restaurant, L'Opera, right next to Inya Lake Hotel which is worth a visit. Great food and the garden setting is gorgeous.

A few tips about Myanmar in general -

What you've heard about needing crisp, clean US dollars is correct. Take $100 bills for changing into kyat but also take some crisp smaller denominations. Some places (for example; the railway line) only accept US dollars and can't provide much in the way of change.

When you go to Shwedagon Pagoda, carry your shoes with you. Otherwise you'll need to find your way back to the entrance where you came in, and also pay for them to mind your shoes.

Bogyoke Market is not open on Mondays. The National Museum is not open Mondays and Tuesdays.

Don't change money or use the internet at Inya Lake Hotel - you can get a much better deal in town.

Positive: Located along side lake means you can always expect nice breeze while sitting in the restaurant lawn. Alot of greenery surrounds this hotel. A decent size swimming pool, nice restaurant with pretty decent food options. Decent staff.
Negative: Very old elevators so please be careful while using them. You can expect very dirty water flowing from the taps in your bathrooms. Alot of lizards in the hotel (a couple I found in my room, though the staff will make sure that lizards are removed the moment you inform them).

Room Tip: Make sure that you check couple of rooms at different floors before you check in. Floors are of diff...

This hotel is in a great location - not far from the airport and on the shore of Inya Lake.

This hotel was truly a disappointment - then what can you really expect after decades of isolation from the rest of the world. If you dreamt of time travel this hotel is for you... The hotel and its amenities breathe 1950's, luckily so does the price/night (40$ min Feb 2012).

We were very happy to be able to book our stay with a credit card via Agoda! We didn't know what to expect from the reviews but actually really enjoyed staying at Inya Lake. The resort definately does have a soviet feel to it but it kind of works. The rooms are enormous with big bathrooms, a nice sitting area and a huge patio. The pool area and grounds facing the lake were nice & we saw gorgeous sunsets on both nights from our balcony. A nice peaceful place about 1/2 from the city and the airport that takes credit cards!

Topped & tailed a recent trip to Myanmar with stays at the Inya Lake. Does remind me of hotels in Tanzania from the early 1980's, apparently built from the same Soviet bloc architectural playlist.
Logistically you can book this online from overseas an pay for any extras by credit card. There are 2 floors of UN personnel living in the hotel so it is rarely quiet, especially with wedding traffic at weekends.
If you don't want to spend a fortune and just need a base in Yangon for sightseeing or whatever ILH is a handy base.
The staff can't do enough to please and the food is surprisingly good. Pleasantly away from the hustle, bussle and fumes of downtown.

Or better yet, burn it down and start over. It starts with the elevator and just gets worse. 2 of the buttons out of 5 are cracked, 2 don't light (including the one for the ground floor), the walls are scratched beyond repair. The hallway floor was probably redone in the 80's - the carpet was moved in places revealing nice water stains. I obviously can only speak on the basis of the room I had, but the experience was miserable. The furniture in the room is probably from when the place was built. The minibar condenser starts and stops at irregular intervals and sounds like you are staying in an airport. The in room safe doesn't work (problematic as one has to carry a lot of cash in Myanmar). The floor is completely trashed. The desk chair has a very discomforting white stain on it. The beds maybe king sized, but with 2 standard sized pillows so about a foot of space on either side of them. Obviously wasn't expecting chocolate n the pillow, but a few tablets of ambien would have been helpful. The view of the lake from the "sunrise" wing looks over the a ballroom and some other awful looking building. A big concrete balcony with 1 chair. As for the bathroom, I'll let the pics speak for themselves, but I was considering taking some soap and washing in the lake as an appealing option. As for the staff, they really did try hard for the most part, but I was trying to get reservations for the night to go to L'Opera and had to go through 3 people to find someone who had heard of it - despite being probably the only top end Italian restaurant in town, and one of the top 3 or 4 period, it also happens to be 100 yards from their entrance - you can't go in or out without passing the sign. I admit, there aren't a lot of good mid-range hotel options in Yangon, but there are definitely options. Try the Chatrium - stayed there earlier in the week and was only $20/30 more a night. Splurge a bit and do the Governor's Residence.
