“Good Location but Overpriced.”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

I stayed here twice ( yes, twice! ) & if i'd had this accomodation in India for about a quarter of the price that I actually paid I would have thought I'd done O.K.
It is well overpriced & I found itt a bit like a Burmese Fawlty Towers except that I will not hear a bad word about the staff who were unfailingly polite & helpful & cheerful.
On my first visit my room was grubby, most of the lighting did'nt work & the view was of an inner rectangle full of junk. Also there were a couple of occasions when I had a spell without any water.
On my second visit I had a much more pleasant room-mind you, it cost even more.
The breakfast which is held in 2 pokey rooms on the 3rd floor is not really worth having as inclusive & certainly not worth paying extra for-2 bananas, 2 anaemic egs, 2 barely toasted slices of bread & a miniature cup of tea ( but not tea as you know it ). You can do much better by popping round the corner to the local street cafes or the 24hr shop.
BUT........The location is good. You can walk to Sule Paya in 15-20 mins & also the Shwedagon Pagoda ( Western entrance ) in 20-25mins. Also I liked to have a beer at The New Doreen restaurant next door where you can sit on a fan cooled patio & eat as well or you can stroll around the corner to a few local eateries on the sidewalk.
So,, perversely, I quite got into my stay here but that's just me.
When I left to catch the bus to Bagan a guy at MGM arranged a 'nice, cheap' taxi to the bus station for me' It was cheap but it was also an old wreck that ran out of petrol half way there. the driver disappeared ( minus a fuel container ) saying he would be back in 5 mins. I abandoned ship & flagged down another & just made the bus.
On my return to MGM I mentioned this to the arranger & he laughed so much he nearly choked. Happy memories.

Room Tip: ask to look at a few, I don't know for sure but suspect they may be better on the higher floors

The only good thing about MGM is the location. The hotel itself is old, dirty (especially the bathroom - awful), noisy and the included breakfast is not good! The price (40$) is way too high for the rooms they offer. AVOID!

at $35 a night through agoda.com it sounds like a deal for Yangon (for less than that I guess you have to sleep on the street). Hotel is therefore old, crappy and dirty. Bathroom was awful, the whole room was ruined.

The location is a bit off, the price is good and the standard bearable. We had some issues with hot water and with the AC, but got a new room after informing reception.

It seems though that they may have known about it and just put guests in that room hoping they won't mind a non-functioning AC.

Clever.

MGM, like most hotels these days in Rangoon offers 3rd class service at 2nd class prices. Couldn't find anywhere else to stay, and unfortunately had to be in the city for awhile. This was previously a businessmans hotel, not really catering to the tourist trade, but the lack of available space means more are coming here.
Staff are not very capable in english, so lots of nods and yes, which means 'i hear you and i'm waiting for something to make sense'. don't try complicated commands, only ask for one thing at a time, othewise you get nothing. while we were told the breakfast buffet would start 'tomorrow' for an entire week, there isn't one. you sit at a table and are brought 2 pieces of white bread, possibly toasted, one egg, and your choice of instant coffee or tea. a better breakfast can be had at the next door restaurant which is open early, is excellent, is cheap, and is popular.
our room was clean, if cigarette burns marked all furniture. most light fixtures and switches didn't work but atleast one overhead fluorescent did. hot and cold water in the shower, next to a dirty and cigarette stained tub.
our room was next to the clogged fire escape, which is used by the help as storage and laundry area, and the cables for the internet. water was pouring down the fire escape onto the internet routers, (see photo) which makes me wonder how long they will last, but none of the staff seemed worried about it.

The main advantage of the M.G.M. Hotel was the option to book prior to our trip. You tend to miss that in Myanmar. Considered the over demand and undersupply one might be happy to find lodging in advance at all. The rooms were low average with working AC when there was power. Breakfast was ok but the breakfast room is quite dark. The location is kind of in the middle but not really close to something. The stuff tries to be helpful but our promised bus ticket did not materialize so that we had to change our plans.
The foto of the Hotel seems to be quite outdated...

Went to MGM (located at corner of bigger Panda hotel with $60 rooms) because all other options in City center were full. 5 mins cab ride one way to center from MGM is 2000 kyats (~$2.5). The service varies depending on who's on call. On 3rd day, they simply forgot to clean the room or give fresh towels. Took me 1 hr to get the front desk to move their butts and do something about it. But their female morning manager who speaks good English was very helpful and apologetic, as well as one of the Chinese owner/ manager. Wifi works every blue moon upstairs, although their lobby connection is generally OK (steady but not fast). $25 single room with a small window and elevator is nothing to remember, but has similar features when compared to other 'mid-range' options in the $50-$80 range for the city.. For $20, you get a bed and an outside bath elsewhere, hence MGM is ok just for that.
