Queen Shin Saw Pu Hotel
Reviewed November 25, 2012

On my first night here, I was awaken by the itchiness of my skin as the mosquitoes in the room were having a big feast on my body while I was sleeping. The shower pressure in the bathroom was also weak. This made bathing a chore as the lack of a water pressure made washing my hair doubly long. We managed to change rooms. However, while sleeping in the second room, we were awaken again and this time by bedbugs! Needless to say, I'm left with a very nice "farewell gift" in the form of bite marks fr bedbugs and mosquitoes.

The saving grace is definitely the warm and patient hospitality of the workers. They were polite and graciously helped us with the changing of rooms for the 2nd time.

The place has a nice family feel and is a nice building but showing it's age. Nowhere else in this region of Asia would I have paid anywhere near $48 per night for a room in a place like this. There was not even a free bottle of water in the room! Laundry an minibar expensive- as often the case. Breakfast fair- omelette and toast and coffee and fruit or local breakfast. Staff have very little English but pleasant and helpful. Effective but vv noisy aircon! With expensive taxis it is quite far from centre but a nice quiet and safe spot.

My wife and I stayed at the Queen Shin Saw Pu hotel in February. We liked it and we are now staying here for the summer. It is a 38 room Burmese hotel. The manager speaks English very well. He lives here with family. The staff is very friendly. We have gotten to know everyone. The manager's wife helped us arrange a wedding anniversary trip to Bagan, and then had a cake with all of the staff for us upon our return.

There is Wi-Fi in the breakfast room. You can get Western, Burmese or Chinese breakfast. Most of the guests are Burmese. We feel very welcome in the hotel, and like being amongst local people rather than only other Western tourists.

The hotel is out of downtown and near the Shwedagon Pagoda. There is a good market-- City Mart-- with restaurants within a 7 min. walk. Taxis are everywhere. Many are 25 years old and the new ones seem to be Chinese Cherys. The Myanmar money is the kyat with about 880 to one US dollar. The cab ride from the airport will be 6000 kyat. Change $100 at the airport to give you some walking around money. A taxi to Scott's market will cost 2500 kyat.

Yangon is very safe and very interesting. It is mostly like stepping into Bangkok about 50 years ago. Downtown has a lot of British colonial buildings from 1900 – 1945.

We like Myanmar and the Queen Shin Saw Pu Hotel. We will be there until September 2012.
