I stayed with two friends (in a private triple room with bathroom) at Okinawa Guest house at the beginning of our trip to Myanmar and the last night before flying out of the country (Oct. 2012).

The guest house is very central and most of taxi drivers know it.

Price is still very reasonable. We payed 35USD / night for a triple room. It was OK, and quite clean. Don't expect anything luxurious for such amount of money, especially in Yangon where so far there isn't much offer of such accommodations. Breakfast was included and pretty good!

The Staff was nice, except the guy who's always at the reception (quite chubby one) who may end up being kind of rude sometimes.

Confirm your booking before flying in!

I recommend this place!

I don't write many reviews but I fee that this place has been done an injustice! I stayed in the $7 dorm and it was good. The bed was comfortable, the mosquito net did the job and he air conditioning was at a nice temperature. The shower was nice and cool, but not spotless clean. The owner, I'l admit, seems a little off sometimes, but spend some time downstairs with him and the kids and he'll brighten up! The breakfast was nice and the cat very affectionate. The $15 double rooms look to be quite open (thin walls or a sheet separating) but for this price, in Yangon, you can't expect too much. I would suggest that the bad reviewers look around the $40 mark next time they visit.

Maybe I shouldn't promote this place too much, to assure myself that there would always be a space for me when I came to Yangon... or maybe that's what the bad reviewers are hoping ;)

This place was so bad that it actually finally convinced me to join Trip Advisor, especially as it was somehow full throughout our stay in Yangon.

We actually stayed at two Lonely Planet recommended guest houses during our stay in Yangon, and it should be noted that the standard of budget accommodation throughout the downtown area is rather poor. However, this was perhaps one of the worst places I have ever slept at (including airports, train stations and a flooded campsite in Wales).

We were given a "room" partitioned off from the owners' kitchen and communal area by a thin sliding door. The owner’s family stayed in the kitchen during the night and could be heard throughout, especially from 5am onwards - despite some pretty good ear plugs. The room consisted of a mattress on the floor, a mosquito net, an air con unit. The switch for the air con was outside the room, which meant that it was rather sneakily turned off by the owner on a number of occasions. The bedding was unclean and the room smelt particularly unpleasant. The shared bathroom facilities (including cold showers) were basic and upstairs - along with the dorm room, which looked equally grim. During the night on my way to the bathroom, four or five people were crashed out in the corridor and reception area.

It was the attitude of the owner, however, which was most off-putting. As others have stated, it was strange just how rude and unhelpful he was in comparison to the incredibly warm reception we received from nearly every other Burmese person we encountered. On one occasion, another guest asked to change the TV channel in the reception area. The owner said no, and when asked why not, he replied that the guest’s room was no longer available to him.

Its only saving grace is its fantastic location in the heart of Yangon’s downtown, and just a few minutes from the Sule Pagoda, but I would strongly recommend fellow travellers stay elsewhere.

i really don't know why this place has so many bad reviews. yeah it's not the trader's hotel with five stars, but if you're on a budget it's the best in yangon. it's very very clean, the rooms look really pretty and quaint with the dim lighting and mosquito net and all, the walls are not dirty and old, delicious breakfast, and the best part is the 16 year old guy who's sorta "running it". he speaks perfect english and is very very helpful, answering tons of questions like which bus to take where, etc. I paid 7$ for a dorm with aircon and $15 for a single room, and you gotta book it advance coz it's often sold out. I had the pleasure of spending an hour at the White House hotel as well coz a friend stayed there, and at the white house the door shuts at 11PM (sucks if u wanna go clubbing). at the okinawa guest house i had no problem coming back late at night. while the others don't speak much english, the 16 year old who's almost always there anyway is fluent. an improvement would be to have breakfast till 10AM coz who doesn't like sleeping in.

UNFRIENDLY, FILTHY, EXPENSIVE...ETC ETC..... You rather go to other guesthouse nearby like the white house wich has amazing breakfast and more friendly and honest owners, they dont respect bookings also, so you might be in trouble even booking in advance (they write only nationality and they dont book by name). You feel you are just another bloody foreigner paying 20 dolars for a dark dirty room due to the lack of accomodation in Yangon.

Room tip: the white house, golden steps, budget hotels
