“They don't look white!”
Reviewed February 1, 2012

It's true, the three "white" elephants are chained up most of the day with just a half-hour break until they free to roam after 5 p.m. We wanted to see them because of their importance in the beliefs of the Myanmar people. Our guide explained that they ARE indeed "royal" and thus, considered "white". Probably not worth a visit unless you are interested in their importance in history.

“Beautiful animals”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

A rare treat but the animals were displaying classic stereotypical behaviour - they clearly don't have enough freedom, though our guide promised the were not chained all the time. I'm not so sure.

There were 2 white ones when we visited, Theigi Marlar and Rati Malar. We get to touch the sacred white elephants... an experience of a lifetime!

“A terrible sight - call in the ASPCA !!!”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

three fully grown elephants are chained to a spot where all they can do is move backwards and forward. i couldn't stand being there for a minute!!!
If there was something I could have done,I would have. we were told the elephants get to roam in the evening. A sorry site.

“Seeing elephants chained at the ankles may not be for everyone”

Never going back. I shudder to think of it still. Stay in the bus if you can.
