An interesting pagoda with shrines for other faiths as well.
Situated in a rather dirty area next to the river.
Would not go out of my way to see this again, it is part of the tourist trail.
As this was at the beginning of our trip we were not suffering from pagoda phobia at this stage - beware you will be after a few days

It is too bad the grounds are so dirty. You have to walk barefoot and by the time you return to the exit you feet look like you walked on coal. As they charge the foreigners for the visit they could provide a water hose to clean you feet.

This was the first pagoda/temple that we toured on reaching Yangon, and it was a good introduction to the religious and structural aspects of the several pagodas/temples to follow. The story of the Buddha hair relic is repeated elsewhere in the country. Because of the crowds it is hard to spend much time looking at the Buddha hair shrine. The gold cladding of everything is also typical of the major pagodas. The "day of the week" shrines were very well done and beautiful. There were several Burmese there and we could observe, I hope respectfully, the decoration of the shrines and the meditation of the worshippers. Note that much of it is reconstruction after the terrible damage of WW II and cut a little slack.

If you are doing research for a tour in Myanmar you should know that it's mainly about visiting different temples.

This is just an ordinary temple for us the tourist but it might be one of the significant pagoda for the local. Why I recommend this temple is because this is the only one in Yangon that you can really walk into the stupa. A stupa is a pagoda structure, round in shape, with a wide base and gradually sharpen up, normally until the side of a pole at the tip. Normally, the stupa is solid or was used to store treasure so it's not possible for us to go in. But in this Botatung pagoda, we can enter one of the stupa and have a look at the interior. It's similar to a maze in golden walls with Buddist related writings.

Nothing much to describe, refer to my picture and decide weather to visit there or not. They charge you 3USD for entrance but if you dress like a local and don't speak English, just walk in with a confident face. For me, 3USD is not worth at all. This country is just opened to outside world not long ago so they are taking advantage of it. 1 year in Yangon I see a lot changes especially entrance fees to tourism attraction.

Buddha’s hair is not obvious to the viewer as it has been embedded / enshrined. Interesting to visit but I think it is a shame that the antiques / sacred documents “displayed” are locked behind two layers of thick metal bars / gates, which makes it difficult to view and appreciate. Compared to Shwedagon Pagoda, this pagoda is not as well-maintained and more dirty / dusty.
