I enjoyed my visits here as it always seemed to coincide with a nat festival of some kind, where offerings of ornate collections of fruit and gift including money are offered to the nats (spirits) they worship. It is like all Burmese festivals very lively and colorful. I always enjoy the river, and it is here where you can take the boat across the river. It is the poorer side of town, just in case you thought it couldn't get any poorer do visit. They need tourists and they are very friendly. For me it's another to put on your list.

Disappointing from outside. But inside it is a maze of beautiful little golden slabbed rooms that go right round till you reach the sanctum which houses a Buddha relic. The whole structure is a little run down but worth a visit to see the amazing gold rush inside

This place is listed twice on trip advisor under 2 different spellings. Its Botataung - not Botatoung.
This pagoda - Botataung Paya is down by the river on Strand Rd. People at the entrance wanted to know my nationality & the hotel I was staying at before I could enter.
Theres an ornamental pool with turtles & catfish in. I was told the small gold Buddha which resided in London's Victoria & Albert Museum for many years - was briefly brought to Buckingham Palace to cure Queen Victoria of a headache.
Its possibly the only hollow pagoda in Myanmar with a maze of glittering corridors inside - the sacred Buddha hair relic is also visible inside.

Down near the waterfront so you can combine a visit to the Botataung Paya with the harbor. Not nearly as crowded as the Shwedagon, it is said that there are hair relics of the Buddha here.
The giant stupa is hollow and you can walk through it. On the grounds is also a pond containing hundreds of turtles.

This notable landmark near Yangon river is home to the sacred hair of Lord Buddha embedded in an ivory cask studded with diamonds and other precious stones. Unlike other pagodas, the dome of this stupa is hollow. The main attraction is the maze of mirrors around the relic covered with gold and glassware. It is thrilling to go around this maze and view many of the preserved antiques and sacred documents. Outside the pagoda is a turtle pond that attracts tourists and locals alike. I would rate it as second best to Shwedagon.
