We were going to go during the day but a business contact offered to take us in the evening instead as it was better - wow, he was right. Fantastic. Definitely hire a guide to find out the amazing facts about this place. An absolute highlight

The atmosphere althought there were a lot of tourists.
The Pagoda is beautiful and the colors are best at sunset time. Don't go on the middle of the day

When building a pagoda to store four of the Buddha's hairs, you must make sure it's a building worth keeping them in and boy does Shwedagon deliver.

The pagoda is easy to see among the Yangon skyline; it towers over most of the city, even the skyscrapers in the downtown area. There are four entrances, north, south, east and west. Some entrances have elevators for the disabled. Be sure to take off your shoes and socks before proceeding up the steps.

Entry to the pagoda is 4500 kyat or 5 usd. Inside, you will find one of the most impressive displays of buddhist statues and imagery that the world has to offer. Bear in mind that this is all real gold you're looking at to make it even more impressive. You could spend a whole day or more just taking in the place but you're likely to spend at most two hours thanks to the Burmese sun beating down on you.

“Brilliant.”

It was beautiful and haunting. A monk saw us with an offering and invited us to chant with us, taught us what to say and laughed along with us when we got it wrong. It was truly an inspirational experience.
